@kfc63822 Because Jan Wenner of Rolling Stone magazine runs it and he hates Grand Funk and a whole lot of other bands that should be in there. Why Mark donated his Messinger is beyond me.
A person who wrote something didn't mean it in a negative way by saying that they were all "average musicians"... but more than the sum of their individual parts. I feel that all three were each a lot better than an average player. Mel was an awesome bass player, and no band achieves superstar status without a great bass player. One listen to them and you know that Don Brewer was one of the best drummers around. And of course, Mark was way above average on guitar, keyboards & harmonica.
I'm from the UK - there's probably only a few die-hard fans over here but I was in there from the start. GFR were not the geatest players individualy, but it was all about the some of the parts. I still love Grand Funk..I only saw them the once in London 1975..great show!! I wish Farner and his current band well..and, of course, the present GFR line-up without him. They should bury their differences. We are only here once!
GRRR was all that and more. They were average musicians as far as that goes (not guitar Gods, bass Gods nor drum Gods) but no one could get a crowd going, sell tickets faster, than these guys. They had a presence that very few will ever have. After them every guitarist started playing shirtless. In reality they kicked ass and took no prisoners. No one wanted them to be 2nd billing to them lest they suffer the consequences, (Sly Stone, Led Zep etc.)
The New York Daily News' Nationwide Readers' Poll for 1971.
Tens of thousands of votes were cast from every state in the nation. Whe the final score was tallied, Grand Funk Railroad had garnered a whopping 75% of the total vote as "Best Rock Group In The U.S." Left to split up the remaining 25% were: 2 Creedence Clearwater, 3. Jackson Five, 4. Led Zeppelin, 5. Three Dog Night, 6. The Who, 7. Sly, 8. Santana, 9.Chicago, and 10.Ten Years After!
I would love to see that promotional clip for Born To Die in it's entirety. There was actually an alternate cover for the album, and I guess Mel was fairly incredulous at the final choice for the cover art

Maybe I am stating what most already know, but only 100,000 copies of the WAAB Album were printed in virgin vinyl, hence the gold color. This was done in anticipation of it immediately going 'Gold'.
You're right seasonoflight. WAAB album was certified Gold & had the number one song BEFORE it was oficially released due to pre-sale orders of the album. Another GFRxR first!
Thanks Packed. Re the 'Live Album': that was not (as many people believe and Terry Knight clearly implied) a 'Thank You' performance at the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1970. Rather, that was compiled over two Shows in Florida during the Summer, 1970. It was meant to be "...representative..." of the 1969 performance. I was bummed when I heard that :-(
Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone Magazine is the reason GFRxR is not in the R&R HOF! To Hell with that piece of crap & his shitty magazine. I'm not buying another one of his shitty magazines until his attitude changes. This idiot knows nothing about music! It makes you wonder where they get some of these fools!
Hail PackedFunk for his diligence and awesome resources to bring us the best funk. Long live GRAND FUNK RAILROAD... they'll always be in my heart and memories.
GFRxR have 33 gold & platinum ALBUMS earned & many gold & platinum singles. They also still hold many ticket sales records. NOT being recognized by The R&R HOF is a bitch-slap to every fan who bought one of those albums or concert tickets. Stop the abuse now!
That was cool as shit! Thanks PackedFunk for your diligence and hard work to bring us these outstanding GFRxR videos! Thank you Ozzyboy for being a stand-up FUNK BROTHER! Whooooooooo! Out-freakin'-standing!
