@dexterke1 I don't know, that website is weird. The touch screen ended up being faulty and I just said "screw it," and bought a Macbook Pro. I am very happy with it, I don't really play games, except for WoW, and it exceeds all of my needs, and it will last me through college! :D The Studio 17 was amazing though. It was SO fast, quite, and ran nice and cool. It was just too big for me. I found that 16" is the perfect blend of space and portability.

when i got my studio 1737, i wanted to turn it off not to waste power. i found out that when you open the start menu and type in "windows mobility center" and click on it. there should be an option called "keyboard brightness" you can control the back lit keyboard.

A state of mind: any excuse that Dell gives for not allowing a buyer to customize the Studio 17 with a solid state harddrive when their netbooks, XPS 16 and Alienware come optional with solid state HD's is a sorry pathetic excuse! Some of us CAN'T LIVE with a 16" screen yet we want a solid state drive so I guess we have to shop at HP/Toshiba/Acer. And too the XPS 16's monitor is not a true 16" it's actually smaller than 16 inches which sucks for those of us who do video and picture editing!

I bought one for my daughter in Dec. 2008. Yes, the hinges totally break. What a wide-screened piece of crap. She now needs a new one and just ordered it from dell. She was sure to check the hinges first. For the cost the 3 dell laptops I have bought since 12, 2005 I could have bought her a nice Mac book, purported to last well over 4 years! What a waste!

a technical thing: without being an arse, usually CMYK is used for print, not RGB. And any professional would use vector art for print, which is resolution independant.

Still i cant imagine what dell has done there..

I have Dell 17 and kinda sucks. Becuase, it wont start normaly and will go to sleep mode when i touch the screen or writing a email.

Well I'd say, be honest with yourself on whether you'd use this at school or out of the house. A desktop would be MUCH cheaper. I don't know what it's like now in high school, maybe you kids do use laptops in school. If that's the case, I'd suggest getting the studio 15 or even a netbook (if you already have a desktop at home). This 17" is big and heavy to carry to and from school/class to class. And since you're going into high school you prolly don't drive.

CD/DVD burner's are very simple to use. But if it's not working, it's prolly broken or a driver issue.

The driver should still be under warranty, unless you've never used it before and your warranty is expired...

I feel kind of lame asking this bc I'm a computer guy myself, but could someone explain to me the "Turbo Mode" feature? Assuming its for energy saving. What I'm talking about is when I was looking at options, it said "Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache) ". Also, how about build quality? More specifically compared to the 17" Macbook Pro. I've been waiting for a PC like this, I think.

Turbo mode, well the processor idles at 1.6Ghz and as more power is needed it goes up in increments of 133Mhz depending on load and how hot the system is, pretty impressive for a 15 year old :D message me up if you need to know any thing else :)

it does have 8 cores, it has 4 physical and each physical can run 2 threads.

And actually 8 core processors do excist they are used in servers, an example of a 6 core is AMD's Istanbul processor. and AMD is going to release a 12 core in 2010

Be aware for Dell Studio series, I bought Dell Studio 1737 in April. I had only trouble with this laptop, first DVD died, than the HDD had bad sectors, no bluetooth installed, build quality is very, very, very poor.

Screen has very poor viewing angles, speaker are disaster, I simple cannot believe.

I would not recommend Dell laptop to anybody.

Are you sure you have the backlit keyboard?

On the keyboard, the right arrow should have a little symbol of a keyboard lighting up. Press Fn and the right arrow to adjust the lighting.

Well I am going for the Dell 15 Studio with 500 GB SATA, 4GB and True High Def 19** X (something) ( the highest they have).

I need an advice is the true hi def a good choice or should I go in for a lower res. I am from India, it sucks the Ram is DDR2 and not DDR3 :( Also I want to get my laptop with Ubuntu (Linux) but they dont give us a choice here, the only option is to go in for Windows, But atleast my win 7 upgrade will be free :D

i agree with you on the graphics, on the site the graphics are really rich and really nice but on the unit the graphics are a bit washed out and look quite different in person than on the site and i know they say the colors may differ from the site than in person but i thought the colors would be richer on the graphics

i am having a problem with my logitech headphones not working. The are brand new and only used a couple of time. And worked great for a time..but now sound has stopped just through the headphones. I believe it is something i may have not set right on the computer. Can you help with this?

If you have the hdmi cable connected.. and the hdmi is the default playback device, your headphones won't work. change it back to pc speakers.

I know I was really considering a Mac too. But after using my friends book, I was really turned off by the limitations of software available... And I really didn't like the idea of dual booting.

Also, Live broadcast streaming. A few sport sites I go to, the users use software only for windows, Sopcast, Swarmplayer...

I know there are solutions for everything you need on a mac. What I'm saying is you're limited to your choices.

The laptop is a great price from the base model, all the way to fully loaded I think. My only complaint is the fact that I had a processor that supports 1066 ram, but they would not let me order it with it online. I think I would have had to talk on the phone to get that done.

Being able to customize the order is a positive.

Otherwise, shop around for systems with the same specs for the cheapest one.
