USE A CERAMIC KNIFE!!!!! it is sharper than a regular stainless steel knife plus it is made of ceramic which does not react with sulfur or anything in the onion for that matter. YES, sharpness of the knife matters when you don't want to be tearing while cutting onions, because rather than squashing the cells and causing a chemical reaction your cutting through them.

I found out a long time ago if you want chopped onions without tears get a sealed chopper, these work great. If you don't lean over the onions when your chopping helps too.

This is cool. I hear that the actual part of the onion that triggers crying is the core. So if you remove the core of the onion, carefully, first, you won't cry when you cut the rest of the onion.

I haven't tried it but I think that would be a waste of it anyways.

I have heard that keeping a bowl of water next to the cutting board works. Something about the gasses released being attracted to water, that is why it ends up burning your eyes, so the water beside the cutting board is closer and attracts the gas.

Unbelievable! I didn't know Lemon worked so well. And concerning the "bent over the onions"? The gases spread--the entire room has the same effect. Lemon just absorbs the gas.

About the liquid nitrogen? Too cold. If they had done it under normal conditions (the freezer/refrigerator), the results would have been better. But, they tried their best.

That is a comment we have had before. First of all we just didn't think about using it, second I would think (but I have never tried it) that small pieces of union float in the water, and prevent you from seeing what you are doing. But again I have never tried it.

Yes that is precisely what we did with the liquid nitrogen. This was the 'exploding' version of cooling the onions.

You don't need to use a lemon, just wash the blade between cuts and the water tension will grab most of the acid.

If you leave your mouth open you don't cry because you breath in the acid and it doesn't reach your eyes. Works well for me.

That is a good question. As told in the film, it is a chemical which mixes with the water in your eyes to form sulphuric acid. When the chemical can't reach enough water then this doesn't happen. The problem with these kinds of scientific endevours is that there are to many variables, perhaps the people you refer to wear lenses, have natural dry eyes, well ventilated kitchens, stand as far back as possible, buy unions which are low in that chemical. It is difficult to say.

What do you think the difference would be between stuffing your mouth full of bread and drinking water? The chemical compound in unions reacts with water to form sulphuric acid, this happens in you eyes. How would water in your mouth (can't reach the chemicals) help when the chemicals go directly to your eyes???

That makes sense, because you won't destroy so many cells with a sharp knife. With a blunt knife you tear in stead of cut the cells and so a lot more collatoral damage, therefore more chemicals, therfore you cry your bleeding eyes out.

Thanks for the nice comment. My objection against the winning video was that it was more brainiac than mythbusters in my opinion. No empirical way of doing the experiment, no different parameters looked at, no science what so ever. At least we tried to explain it. Anyway the video was fun to look at, but like I said more brainiac in my book.

I think you are right about that. They just deemed it confirmed just because they couldn't pull the phone books out of each other, but a true explanation wasn't there. When the real Mythbusters took on that myth they did try to get an explanation for it. I must agree that you did look for some explanations, for example I didn't know why you have to cry when peeling onions, and I do know now. And that's why the experiments you tried did also make sense... Maar goed een 2e plaats is ook zeer goed!

People try all the remedies when all you need to do is cut them underwater :D i.e in your sink or kitchen bowel it also helps the onions keep their moisture (my nan used to do it when she cooked them :) )

As we explained in the video, sulphuric acid is created in your eyes due to some complicated sulpher compound and the fluids in your eyes. Have you tried it your self because I don't know how it would work.

Ik heb van heel veel mensen gehoord dat onder water erg goed helpt. De reden dat ik die niet wilde behandelen is vanwege het feit dat veel mensen die niet kennen en dat het misschien smaak zou verstoren. Het spoelt immers ook sappen weg. Maar kennelijk was ik dat later vergeten toen we ook de citroen mythe gingen testen, want dat verstoorde de smaak een stuk meer. ;)
