It's done. The state of Georgia murdered a man who was most likely innocent. Should those responsible be held to the same standards as murder suspects? For political reasons, the Supreme Court denied stay. Shame on that ideology.

An often overlooked downside to the death penalty is the fact that juries often return a Not Guilty verdict in capital cases where the defendants guilt is obvios. The rate of acquittals in the US is way up.

So, we have guilty murderrers walking free and innocents being executed. CP prevents justice rather than serving it.

All in all, there is nothing good to be said for the death penalty - probably why most countries with paved roads and streetlights have banned it.

You know, after this, I think the prospect of the death penalty should be taken off the table, no matter whether they find him guilty or not.

Troy Davis has been tried and retried again and again, put on death row and pulled right back off. The last date of his execution was stayed just 90 minutes before he was put to death. It's hard to imagine the psychological impact this must have upon a person, knowing you're within inches of your life over and over again. It's downright inhumane.

Thank you. Capital Punishment is a big blot on the justice system period. There have been so many cases when an innocent person has been found guilty and vice versa. There have been studies suggesting that juries and courts get it wrong at about 10 percent of the time. The thing with capital punishment is there is no way to address a mistake. The old cliche two wrongs don't make a right.  We should know better than this...we are supposed to be a civilised country.

Yawn. Multiple courts state and federal have reviewed -- repeatedly -- Davis's habeas petitions. And the relevant federal district court has painstakingly gone over the factual record, eyewitness testimonies, and years-after-the-fact recantations that Davis refused to have cross-examined. Ultimately, the cause celebre "is largely smoke and mirrors. The vast majority of the evidence at trial remains intact, and the new evidence is largely not credible or lacking in probative value."

Lawrence Brewer commited an unspeakable crime, but I'd still support a commutation to life without parole. The Byrd family's support for sparing his life is admirable to say the least.
