Sure it's also Elizabethan, but the fact is that a very black woman looks silly when she paints her face so extremely white and this is ironically why black face is also funny on white people. Everyone would be a lot better off if we just relaxed and enjoyed the simplicity of the gag. I think this message is most likely contained here.
