  • Shawn, I've just brought a good driver and fairway woods and would like to buy some good irons as I am starting to take golf seriously. However, I don't know a great deal about good brands of irons or what to look for. Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Shawn i'm 14, what should my shaft flex be around? I hit my 6 iron 165.

  • Clemshaw, I'm 13 but I'm too good for kids clubs what do you suggest for irons. I hit my 7 iron 135 if that helps.

  • @koochobx The next logical progression is a higher performance women's club or go with a men's club with a light steel shaft in a regular flex that you can grip down on; Shawn

  • @clemshaw im twelve and use lady cobra cxi with airwieght graphite shafts

  • @superscootkid Makes a lot of sense!! Cobra makes a great women's product and solid clubs in general; Great choice! Shawn

  • @clemshaw yeah i just switched over to my dads old peerless standard

  • Shawn, Could you do a video or comment on the club face alignment using offset cavity back clubs as I am having difficulty with aligning it & feeling the balance points. Used to have blades years ago but getting older & switched to G10 Pings. I have had others say this is tough to get used to. Setting up seems unnatural.

  • @NHOJ1111111 The most important thing to do is this: Whip to target and see how the ball flies; if you were looking for a fade and you get a straight shot, then the face of the club is a bit too closed; you must feel the difference between an action to target and an action to ball is though!! See the last 50 videos from my you tube home page; then you should be caught up; pat attention to the ridiculously easy video titles...Shawn

  • Hi Shawn. Quick question.

At what point in my swing development should I consider getting fitted. An extreme example was a guy I was working with that played for only one week and went and bought a fitted set of clubs when he had nothing going for him.

Myself, I'm getting better, but still developing my swing. Even though my swing is still developing, but getting closer, should I still wait, or should I get fitted now?

  • Hi Shawn, love your videos.

I am looking at buying a new set of irons, I am 6'4 and when i go into shops their immediate advice is to get shafts 1 inch longer than standard. When i tried all the different brands i found that i was striking the X22's the best. Problem is, this was with the standard length shaft. So, i am unsure as to whether i should order a set 1 inch over (without being able to try them out) or would the standard length be ok (given my height). Thanks

  • @Coupe300 Yes, once you have found the right feel in a club; then get them fit to you; it will not change the overall feel, but you will feel more comfortable with them over the ball and this will translate into better balance overall as well;

    Shawn

  • Hey shawn i just bought some 09 burners they only had me hit couple of shots they said i was hitting on the heel but they said it was fine,im 5'7" 213 lbs they gave me steel shaft they preety much gave me clubs off the rack u think im good or should i take them back. bought them at roger dunn. thanks

  • Sorry for the late answer; shaft selection seems fine and they are a good set of clubs; the key though would have been to try others to compare; but there are other factors like were you swinging through the ball and was the distance between you and the ball correct when you tried them; I am sure that after a couple months that things are starting to gel? Shawn

  • i just had a set of cobra customised to me. I'm not a tall guy (5'8") but i found out tht I hit a standard length club the same as one tht has been lengthened by 0.5 inch. The club fitter suggested that I should opt for the longer club ie 0.5" longer to give more shot flexibility and I can always grip down if I want. Is he right?? thanks

  • Not bad; many guys on tour grip down on their clubs like Anthony Kim and Moe Norman did it as well; you can't speak against that! :) Shawn

  • Gday Shawn,

You mention the preferance to blade irons over cavity, i dont see many players with blades goin around, the closest is maybe AP2's, do you think a player on cavity backs with a single figure handicap is considered not a 'true' golfer than one who uses blades? or is it a feedback thing your more looking for.

P.S, love the videos, helped me immensly!

  • Hey Shawn,

I have a question about "game improvement" irons...they are more forgiving for sure, but in terms of actually improving your game do you think a set of decent blades is better to have?

I'm a (very) high handicapper, I own some G.I. irons which I like but I do miss the joy of a perfectly struck 2-iron (admittedly that didn't happen that often!) and the feedback of a blade. My old blades were terrible though and way too long for me...have blades improved much in the last 20 yrs?

  • Yes they have! They are bigger and have better leading edges and better grooves too; there is a lot more selection in small cavity back forged irons too; well worth the try with Mizuno, Cobra, Titleist and Bridgestone; Shawn

  • Hey Shawn,

I Will be purchasing a new set of irons this fall. I am looking at the Mizuno Cut Muscle. I am and have always played blades so can you tell me what the difference is between reg blades and the Cut Muscles? And do you think Mizuno is making great clubs these days?

I enjoy the best instructor bar none here on the Tube.

    Regards,

    Michael from Augusta

  • Thanks Michael! Mizuno makes super clubs and I highly recommend them; try the different models of blades they make and pick the one that feels the best; they are all good! Shawn

  • ive watched a good 10 videos of yours. they are great. I just got back into golf this year. im a freshman this year and i made varsity (only cuz everyone else sucks tho). i shoot an avergage of like 50... yea i suck. i have set of warrior irons, and i just broke my driver so im getting a new callaway one. i checked out ur video to see how to pick a shaft and stuff. thanks.

  • Hey Man! Remember that everybody sucked at one point; and that like a kid learning how to walk, even though they are not walking yet, you cannot say anything bad about it; because they are in the perfect state of learning! :) This is how we are when learning this game! So you can't do anything wrong when you keep learning...you only suck when you give up...Shawn

  • Thanks, really appreciate that. What I just don't get about golf is how one day all my drives are pure and my short game hopeless, the next my driver sprays and I am pure gold with the wedge & putter...

I do know really, I think I just don't play often enough, but it is unlike any other game in that regards - such small margins.

Will never give up though. I have 50+ years to improve at this game and there's plenty of beautiful courses out there to take my mind off my faithful snap hook :-).

  • i dont plan on giving up so thanks.

  • and also... i got the big bertha 454 driver. its working great.

  • Shawn, 2 years ago I purchased a full set of Nicklaus clubs. Driver, 3 wood, 3&4 hybrid, 5-P cavity backs, 52, 56, 60 W. I love them all and thanks to you I swing them all well. My question is... when do I know when I'm good enough to try to swing blades? Thanks and by the way these two vids have been more informative than any salesman or club rep I've ever met.

    Dan

  • If you like their feel and are consistent with distance then stick to them; you can play blades anytime; we were all on blades 30 years ago; Ping clubs were just coming out...all you saw in bags were MacGregor, Hogan, Wilson, Powerbilt, Arnold Palmer etc...they were all the same specs; lie, loft, dynamic gold shafts, victory grips. Did not bother us one bit! :) Shawn

  • Thanks Shawn, demo days are coming soon to a dealer near me and I plan on trying out some blades.

    Dan

  • I have just bought a new set of Adams irons, and yes they have shaved about 3 stokes form my score.

  • Right on dude! Great clubs they make!

    Shawn

  • My irons were "fit" at the thrift store I bought them at. A set of old Wilson Pro Staffs with a steel shaft. My Ping pitching wedge was picked up at a garage sale for $3. My Odessey putter was given to me along with my Cleveland driver. I also picked up a Vulcan hybrid 4 iron at a used sporting goods store for $20.

    My handicap is 12.

  • .... and you might just knock 10 off that if your clubs were fitted right, your story is exactly the same as mine, except I went and got my (already "perfect") clubs fitted and found they weren't set up correctly for me. They did the job, but COULD have been doing it better.

  • yea. first, off 12 aint great. not bad, but nuthin to brag about. u could def shave at least a few strokes off with sum clubs tht arent shit

  • When i first started playing golf i was able to get a graphite shaft set. The when i bought my own set i got a steel shaft. I notice the steel shafted were slightly shorter. Is that common? How much difference can it be because it is shorter?

  • Thanks for the question!

It is very common; this space is way too short to answer but what I can say is that the graphite vs Steel is so different in feel, flex, torque and droop...It is all about the feel; if it feels good and performs well, make best friends with it and don't change...:)Shawn

  • Hi Shawn I just got some sweet Cleveland Tour Action irons with the ta7 gold shaft. for like 1/4 the price at a clearance sale. They felt like they hit them self...I think i got the right clubs for me :)

  • Very sweet set dude!

  • oh amazing set

  • Hey shawn. Have you ever heard someone who feels as if they loose their club during the take away? I mean feeling. I am cruising along and bammmmmm! all of a sudden I start sticking it in the dirt. Any drills for the person who knows the basics? O and my grip feels so funky during all of this.

  • Hey snsstarnes; sorry I did not see your comment until now...Have a look at my new "Golf Pro Lesson Clay Pigeon Shooting" video for the target bound release and my "Golf Pro Lesson Perpetual motion drill" video for getting out of the way of this release...Shawn

  • Hey Shawn. One question. What is the flex for your driver?

  • Just stiff flex; and you should try a few there as well because every manufacturer has different specs on their shafts; a UST shaft feels very different than a Fujikura or YS shaft in the same flex...

    Shawn

  • Ok Shawn looking to get fit for irons and I was just wondering do you just go up to the pro or fitter and tell him/her that i what to be fit for w/e club or should i go to a place that specializes in fittings

  • I must have missed your comment! Sorry about that!

    I would do both and compare notes and see how they match up; the key here is to try before you buy and do not let someone just tell you what you should be hitting;

    Shawn

  • heyya Shawn,Rashid from Singapore..thanks for the tips, now i will be fully equipped to hit the pro shop to find me a good iron set to serve my swing this weekend... :)

  • Shopping for golf is soo much fun! :)

  • Just wanted to say that the AP-2s are AWESOME! I just got them last week and thanks to your tips i was able to feel my specs out, thanks!

  • I am waiting for our new Titleist Fitting Cart; they do look sweet and I can't wait to try them;

    Shawn

  • Shawn, this lesson was great. Today, I had a set of Titleist Z*M irons custom fitted. However, for what ever reason, the guys working in Golf Galaxy were trying to talk me out of buying muscle-back irons. After demonstrating to them that I am a very good striker of the ball, the Shawn Clement way, they decided to fit me with the set of irons of my choice. Anyway, I would like know why everyone believes that muscle-back irons are too hard to swing. The Z*M irons feels no different than my 704's.

  • Good for you! Fear and brainwash from the OEMs is what holds most people back and it shows up a lot in the sales people who have attended the PK meetings...not their fault as they are probably not at the level of play or they have played cavity backs their whole golfing lives and don't know the feel of a well struck blade! Now you can say "That's not a knife! This is a knife!":)

    Shawn

  • AMEN, Brother!

  • Hey Shawn, played a round yesterday for the first time this year with my newly fitted Titleist Z*M's. For the first time, I finally broke 100--it sure feels good, since I've been at the for almost two years now. My foursome couldn't understand how Golf Galaxy sold me a set of blades. They all have that same fear and brainwash about using blades too. Anyway, I said to them, "you should always bring a blade to a knife."

  • great video, shawn!

can you do a video on wedges, and there bounces and how to play from different sands? it might be difficult with everyhting covered in snow! thanks in advance

  • Thanks Jordan and Yes; I am planning on doing a wedge fitting as soon as my short game area is up and running; I have a new putting green being installed indoors here at the learning centre next Monday so we will have some fun with that! Shawn

    Shawn

  • cant wait!

by the way, was my comment about club length and lie angle accurate?

  • Yes it was! Thanks!

    Shawn

  • hey Shawn, Wayde from Australia here...got your DVD last week, very good!

Good video here as well, I've just bought a new set a few months ago and this is what they did for me, now I know they did it right :) (Powerbilt Citation irons and 3 wood, with Titleist driver and wedges, luv 'em!)

  • Awesome Wayde! I am happy to hear that!

    Thanks for the comment; Shawn

  • length of club: too long, towards the heel

    too short, towards the toe.

lie angle: too upright, heel digs, hits left

too flat, toe digs, hits right

  • Great videoes as always Shawn.

    Got two questions though.

What happens to the ball if you have a lie angle that is not correct for you? Could it not result in a push/pull if it is to upright or flat?

The Lie angle will then depend on everyones natural swing? Like degree of vertical plane?

And shaft length. If it`s to long you might loose your balance? Same if its to short`? You would feel the need to lunge after the ball? Maybe Im way off but Im curious in the swing effects.

  • Hi Guys and thanks for your comments;

To answer these questions in a nutshell I would refer to what Pecky has said which is right out of the textbook (way to go Pecky!). I can tell you that it is more the length-lie combo that creates the positive or negative optics at address that would affect the set-up and posture and consequently the swing itself...You must be able to get into your stacked posture with the toe slightly off the ground and feel like you can make a solid pass through the ball.

  • Looking forward to your comments on the latest Golf Digest and the sponge BOB drill.

  • I did not get the issues yet, any good?

  • Leadbetter, is using a sponge under his left foot to incorporate a power transition. I'm interested in your thoughts on the placement of the sponge-he has it under the left toe.

(just breezed through it and have not read it thoroughly yet)

  • Nice video. Good job at addressing the different aspects of being fitted.
