  • Chuck Norris played that. With his asshole.

  • I got $1000 if Jon can play AND actually sound good on da high notes!

Jon, play "hey there" MF version, don't miss a note, be in tune, get a great , fat sound ( screamer sound not needed ) and the $1000 is yours!

  • Jon faddis is getting fat to look like cat Anderson

  • omg i was there, in that year, kingston high school jazz ensamble lol

  • dude....whoaahh...like.... he's good.

  • Faddis is continuing MF's legacy by destroying as many young tpt players as he can. Don't try this at home kids...it will kill your playing. Believe me.

  • Yeah but Faddis plays In the FADDISPHERE. MF doesnt. Lol. and thats a patented term. Its not destroying someone- its giving them something to work towards. I hope at least.

  • STFU!!! can u imagine a world without lead trumpet players

  • @solostrad Yeah, one where 13-yr. olds learn fundamentals before blowing their chops trying to sound like Faddis. After that, go for it...

  • @NotMiles shut up asshole

  • I JUST SHAT MY PANTS

  • A week ago, I changed my diet to vege.

Now my butt makes the same high squeeks as this guy's horn. ESPECIALLY on my initial jut during my wake-up poo.

The squeeks aren't for nearly as long in duration, but just as well defined in tone. I figger my typical squeek is 1 second long.

    Vege.

  • This is fantastic. I encourage people to search out Cat's various recordings. I'm particularly fond of his Satin Doll solo on Duke's 70th Anniversary Album.

Cat looked like a linebacker and his sound was pure sizzle.

  • That is amazing, such power in such a high register, and i love that shake he added, that was so cool, and no one could put him to shame, he can do alot more than play high thats for sure

  • NO CAMERAS! i almost wasn't allowed in for the 2008 performance at avery fisher hall because i had a camera and i ended up just passing it over the staircase.

i wish i was here to see this! i love the LCJO and i love this song to bits

  • dude i was there and he wasn't using a mic. so sick.

  • is he using a mic. cause i dont see it

    .shit!

  • Nah, acoustic sound is getting to the broadcast/recording mics on the floor or out front. Jazz at Lincoln Center is usually in the Alice Tully hall with under 1100 seats so who needs a mic on a trumpet... to spoil reality. Most great live Jazz (and Classical) recordings were made before 1966 with 1 to 3 mics. Arguably some of these are the best recordings.

  • This is a very stupid question, but who is the guy in the huge picture behind the band with the slanted hat? I know... I'm culteraly ignorant.

  • Pretty sure that's Duke Ellington.

  • it is duke ellington this was at the Essentially Ellington Festival 07 Rockin and Rythm

  • it was 06

  • shitt he's amazing strong

  • Im glad that im not the only one who feels this way.

  • It can be forgiven that people like you make statements like that, because a lot of us know that you don't know what you're talking about, but for those who don't: Faddis made a niche for himself being a high note player, true, however he's incredible all around jazz trumpeter as well. You've just not listened to enough of his stuff. Then again, people like you know nothing about the music industry and just make ignorant statements anyway. So, have fun being ignorant.

  • I know that Jon Faddis didn't do a perfect job but it was celebrating his legacy of being an incredible lead player. Even in Maynard's last days of playing people tried to criticize him. Your chops don't stay perfect all your life. Too bad you've never had chops like that, then you would understand it isn't all about showing up people because you can. It's respecting the cats that came before you and paved the road to help you get where you are now.

  • There certainly are others that could put

Mr. Faddis to shame, but as far as ignorance goes.....you have got us all beat. Congrats!

  • i've met him...he's really tall...and really good at what he does

  • i didn't really like that, i like the younger faddis, there wasn't any slid'n up to notes

  • You idiot! Listen to the original with Cat Anderson and it is the same way. You are suppose to gliss up to the notes.

  • ...i have my opinion, you have yours..

even john himself talked about attack..

  • i agree with spencetpt. this is a tribute to the duke and cat anderson and he is imitating cat anderson. plus at the end of this he actually tongues a few notes up there..

  • I love life in the faddisphere!!

  • Trumpet players the world over are teary eyed after seeing this. Simply amazingly sonic..

  • Wow @ some of the above comments! It amazes me how high note trumpet playing can be such a controversy! It's quite funny to me actually. On that note, there's just about nothing more fun than playing really high and really loud over a big band! :D

  • Then don't listen to it. Besides, he was copying Cat Anderson's solo

  • Andy.

    You're an idiot.

If you took your head out of your ass, you'd listen to this guy's other pieces.

The only person who even comes close to his tone is Wynton.

    Get over yourself.

Why dont you do something and post it up?

    Didn't think so.

  • You're the idiot. The statement you are responding to relates to this clip, not Faddis in toto. And yes, people are capable of forming opinions about music, food, art, architecture and everything else under the sun without ever becoming professional chefs or surpassing Michelangelo.

  • "Someone needs to take that trumpet and smash it across their knee"

Your one of them Columbine types aren't you?

  • "Someone needs to take that trumpet and smash it across their knee"

It's "his knee", not "their knee". "Their" is plural, and I'm pretty sure there's only one dude you're talking about...

  • I'm pretty sure you're a dumbass. The subject is "someone" not Faddis, numbnuts.

  • learn some grammar you fucking retard, he's right.

  • i felt that..it wasnt just about his register..the trumpet was making a statement up there..and he had a smooth simple melody it was amazing...get into the music ..listen to it again

  • Hey man. I'm with you on this. I think that he is a great player below double g, but above that I dont care.

  • Is that concert E that he hits at 0:20 in the third or fourth octave? When it's that high, it's hard to tell. Unreal, man. Faddis is a giant.

  • hey, i was at that concert! that's may '06, right?

  • clifford brown is my favorite.

  • faddis may be better than cat anderson, but freddie hubbard is better than both of them.

  • This guy has the total package! Low, Mid, High range, Improv chops. Back to the Woodshed!!!

  • Faddis is many times better than Cat Anderson was.

  • If it was'nt for Cat there would be no Faddis.

  • What the fuck does that mean? without Cat Jon wouldn't be a great player? Was Cat the first or only high note jazz player? That line of thinking is so faulty, you'll never get any kind of degree at this rate. Stop commenting.

  • there is some truth to that..Cat laid the path..but in truth its more dizzy's doing to Faddis and Arturo than Cat

  • I'm almost sure Cat had greater range than Jon.

  • Higher? Who cares? Above dubba-C who cares who can go one higher? It's all a freak show up there. The reason I like Faddis is that he can PLAY THE HORN - I don't care how high he can play. Stop overanalyzing these guys, all you wannabes.

  • I very much agree, the video of heres to that rainy day is the perfect example. his sound all over the horn is so beautiful.

  • Cat was from another planet, and so is Jon. There's just no comparing.

  • if there is any naysayers of jon faddis, just check out the other vids of him. like here's that rainy day.

  • it's lead, not first chair man. if ur gonna talk the talk, at least use the right vernacular. talk like a cat that knows what he's doin man.

  • i agree, jon faddis is the man!

  • if you're so much better than him, than why engage him in conversation?

  • Forget it!!!

I play trumpet and I can't even come close to do that.

    I'm afraid I'll bust a brain cell.

  • God dam, Faddis, still got it, I can tell you that my friends, and who's said that the screamer range of a trumpet sucks, I swear to god they should go to hell for that, for you say that Arturo Sandoval, Cat Anderson, MAYNARD FERGUSON suck too

go practice some boring things in your musicial life

  • I Play trumpet too so you can stop with that argument.

  • I play the butt trumpet, so I cannot engage you in an argument. Pass the taco sauce, please. Mannn, this burrito is good.

  • excuse me "brunoleicht" but youre not the only "real" trumpet player here. i myself am a "real" trumpet player. the way i got this footage was by being a trumpet player in a jazz band who was accepted into the "Essentially Ellington" jazz festival, one of the most prestigious high school jazz festivals in America. i know it is a "crowd pleaser" that doesn't mean he isn't a good musician.

  • I was present during this concert!

Do you have any video from the award ceremony?

  • and honestly i dont' understand why people are hatin on the high notes. are you envious, or just enjoy repeating what your instructors have told you. honestly, give me a good explanation why a melodic line (or any line) can't be played up an octave and i'll give you props, but until then, just appreciate the music, don't be dicks, and if you feel like being an asshole, keep it to yourself and write it in a diary.

  • if those high notes were not part of the original recording it would be more unnecesssary than saying, "fuck you" at a church

  • so according to your logic, if a band plays a song at a show, that band must play the song note-for-note, the same way it was in the original recording. now i don't know about you, but according to miles davis and a large amount of other musicians, jazz is both about imitation and paying your dues, but primarily about making the music (or a certain song) your own and playing it in a way that you feel it should be played.

  • he is playing the scream book by cat anderson. That part is meant to be played high maybe you should listen to ellington more often before you post something. All major recordings of this piece have a scream trumpet at the end of it. So high notes are necessary.

  • word

  • I think Jon did a very good job of imitating Cat. About Faddis being a bad musician, I think thats a little harsh. Cat was and will forever be the man. His range and power was sick. No mic over a full piece Duke Band screaming like that all night had to be something to behold. There arent many people who can play both melodically and with such a hig range,

  • Right on psmizzle!

  • man you guys need to stop competing to see who can play the highest! it's not musical! IT'S NOTHING BUT A GIMMICK! PLAYING HIGH IS JUST CHEAP BULLSHIT! John faddis sucks at MUSIC. Sure he can play high, and that's incredible, have you ever heard him play a melodic line? Sorry, john faddis sucks.

  • man u need to take the stick out of ur ass and chill, the reason jon is playing high is cuz this song, "rockin in rhythm" has a crazy high trumpet part at the end (listen to "duke live in italy 1967")also, who are u to say that jon sucks?have u heard any other recordings of him or are u basing ur opinions off of what u hear other ppl say?just because he's know for playing high notes and can play them well, it does not mean he isnt musical.

  • and i think u should be less ignorant and actually check him out before insulting him.

  • Wow... he sucks at music? I guess thats probably why Dizzy named him as his protege (along with Arutro). If you really wanna hear Jon Faddis play music, get his album called Rememberance, he doesn't play above a high C the whole thing.. listen to that, then tell me what you think about Jon Faddis musically.

  • yes pianoanimal09, i have heard him play a melodic line. Check out this video dumbass.

  • You don't know jack my friend. What the heck are you doing surfing for jon faddis vids anyhow...if its all just a "gimmick". I know Jon and he happens to be a great guy with loads of talent...his "gimmick" has made him plenty of cash over the years...what hotel lobby did you say you play at?

  • Go do your homework before you make a comment like that or you'll continue to sound ignorant.

  • I don't have time to comment... I've got a date with TuKu and TaTaKa.

  • You've got that right brother!!!

  • haha dats so tru!! nice one m8 xD

  • Those chicks really know how to tongue.

  • Dis is true, brudda!

  • pianoanimal you are the biggest idiot ever to comment on youtube

  • yeah douchebag. Jon Faddis can solo too, and very well. You just don't really know what you're talking about.

  • you're ungrateful. these are a bunch of high school students who are talented jazz musicians and worked their asses off to be in the presence of the LCJO and to watch jon faddis play along would be a huge honor. watch what you're talking about. and he's not showing off! listen to "rockin' in rhythm".. or any ellington at all for that matter. this man has got history, and chops to match.

  • Good Comment.

  • Oh man, I was there for that and it was amazing! He can scream!

  • He's really like the modern day Cat Anderson, I just think it's great that we have a player with this ability, which draws so much attention especially from younger players, who is greatly influenced by past greats such as Louis and Dizzy. Not to mention playing the music of Duke Ellington. I'm seeing many younger players forget about these past musicians from which the music originated.

  • I'm sitting here at my PC with my mouth on the floor. That was just unbelieveably good! That's enough to have you on a serious high for months!

  • Nobody did it like El Gato. Too bad Cat isn't as widely known as Faddis, many people think Jon invented high notes.

  • my god! i know i love cat anderson! hes one of my favorite trumpeters to come from duke's band (well my favorite for high notes at least) i also like cootie williams (mainly for his plunger stuff).

but u have to admit, jon faddis is the best living trumpeter for the job, its basically his style, which is a strength and sometimes weakness for him...

  • FREakin amazing how high he gets
