the band creaky boards came up with the songs way before Coldplay did. Coldplay copied the melody, and there is no amount of arguing that will convince me otherwise. I have mixed these songs together myself, and there is not trickery, Coldplay didn't pay a royalty fee, and the infringed on the copyright that creaky boards had on their song.

IT'S JUST CHORD PROGRESSION. These two songs are very very different if you have a musically trained ear. I personally don't hear anything similar except that they are in the same key and are both in 4/4 time (the Creaky Boards song is actually slower than this). And the refrains are NOTHING alike. Satriani and Creaky Boards are just picking on Coldplay because of a few minor similarities because they haven't heard the millions of other songs that have the exact same similarities.
The issue with satriani however is that, the tempo is the same and the harmonic and melodic analysis of the verse of Viva La Vida and the chorus of If I Could Fly are essentially the same. So, rhythmically, melodically and harmonically speaking they are the same. Whether or not Coldplay actually ripped it off or not, doesn't actually matter, all Joe has to do is prove that they could have had access to his music (easy) and that the theoretical analysis proves to be all too similar, which it is.
Oh I think he will win, or at the very least get some kind of out of court settlement. I just think that musical coincidences are more common than most ppl think. Plagiarism is a harsh claim. After all I would say that Coldplay's other stuff was original, it sucked IMO, but it was original.
There are tons of songs with the same chord progression. I respect the creaky boards and Satriani. I'm sure every song written has a song that sounds quite similar.
Let's think of it this way, the only way someone can judge if they're similar is by the virgin ear.

Everyone's gotta get over it, like, courts will settle it, so leave your personal preference out of it.
They're all pretty good songs. And they all suck in there own way.
Chris Martin thinks he's God, hence the lyrics.
Creaky Boards are a little TOO stuck in the 70s.
And Joe Satriani doesn't even write real songs. It's more like an organized jam session. I'm sure he has other guitar riffs and progressions that sound like elements of REAL songs.

sure! why not? there are songs on the top ten charts right now that use the same chord progressions. That's like if one drummer plays a beat, that doesn't mean someone else can't use it. It may just be the part that make sense for the song. In this case, we're talking about the melody. Unfortunately for Creaky Boards, he ends his phrases going up, not down like Chris Martin. Unless something's EXACTLY the same, there's no argument. I

And if Coldplay did actually "steal" the idea of the Creaky Boards' melody, he knew the variation makes them "different". You can't say someone stole your idea. With any market, an invention, a song, anything, if your idea isn't at least executed to a point where it's on paper, you don't own it. If i wanna open a coffee shop, and you do it before me, I can't sue you. As much as I feel like Creaky Boards deserves something for similarities, legally speaking, it won't happen. Nor Joe Satriani.

I hate how everyone acts like they know more. Ya know, it IS possible that no one copied anyone. If you use that progression (which is super easy) and start humming a melody you may just get this. They each just came up with similar things. The odds that 3 people picked SIMILAR (not exact) melodies for THIS chord progression, are actually quite high, given 1000's of years of music. I'm sure there are 40 other living people who could found similarities with something they wrote.

merge the joe satriani chorus and you'll be blown away. the tempo, melody, chord progression, and time signature are all the same. The coldplay producers stole this and thought throwing strings and vocals over it would cover them enough.

i gotta go with jamesperson on this one. coldplay's song is much better and i do have basis for that. just check itunes top 100 songs; do you see satriani up there? nope. do you see coldplay? hell yes. im not gonna try and persuade you that coldplay is better because you obviously wouldnt believe me, but the rest of the world blatantly feels that coldplay is better

So your basis is a top 100? My argument was not about sales or popularity, it was about who has more original talent and skills. Your response demonstrates the typical new attitude towards music: sales numbers. If music is taking that route for good, well then we're all screwed from a true variety, since the top 100 is probably your favorite way to determine who is good or not.

honestly, if someone heard the satriani song and the viva la vida on the radio, not knowing who satriani or coldplay were, do you really think the average person would like satriani's better?? he doesnt intend for his songs to be liked by the average person, he caters to rock guitar fans. the fact that means that it appeals to more people, not that everyone pretends to like them because theyre just jumping on the bandwagon.

I don't think thats right. I think your thinking of when "If i could fly", the song that is claimed to be stolen by coldplay, that was released in 2004, and viva la vida was released only over the passed summer.
