as far as this whole modern metal is shit argument goes, i think it's kinda stupid. the genre is simply evolved. not different in setup from the 80's or 90's. there's still the glam side and the musician's side. back in the 80's you had Motley Crue and Kiss, and then you had Metallica and Slayer. in the 90's you had Metallica and Megadeth, then Pantera, Morbid Angel, and Death. today, you have A7X and Escape the Fate, vs. the Melodic Death Metal scene and the upcoming thrash resurgence.
