Ahh yes. I remember these trains well. I used to spend summer afternoons at Wolverton station and MK central watching them roar by. Traffic on the WCML is pretty boring now by comparison. Only really pendos and desiros. If your lucky you still see the odd 90, 92 or pair of 86s on freights, but usually its just a 66.
Why they like to run so many diesel locos on a fully wired line I really don't get. Surely it must be a lot less economical?
A Brilliant Video which i watch quite often, The class 87's are very much missed (especially my favorite-87009 City of Birmingham) and one wonders if any 87's will ever return home after their stint in Bulgaria? and i am pretty sure the 87's were capable of faster speeds than 110mph, top marks for this video :)))
@ads1066 Thanks for your comments. I'm sure the 87s were only limited by the linespeed. I doubt that they will come back from Bulgaria unless repatriated by enthusiasts! ;o((
just to clear up the mystery of the mettalic sound its the front coupling not secured properly and swinging against the loco frame. if you look carefully you can see it moving jn the video. nice video
great vid mate the good old days but have a few atlerations for ya 87005 never worked in 2003 as was stored @ willesden tmd with a faulty transormer and 86249 was never a virgin livered loco the 86 looks like 259
Great video, thanks for posting - enjoyed Cheddington and earlier one from Norton Bridge. The IC swallow livery was far superior to the Virgin effort which looked tacky very quickly. But these were 'real' loco hauled trains, not the plastic emu boxes we have now!
@newdecade Usually they did, but on very the rare occasion were the whole trains got turned through weekend engineering works ( i.e DVT leading out of Wolverhampton. Train gets to B'ham NS, Route south blocked, The only way out is via Soho / Perry Barr to Stechford and away to London. Now DVT is on rear but leading out of London for it's return
excellent vid seems you got the right station to film at. if you filmed now all you'd get is pendalinos, think we should have the variety of locos back like we used to have not the same all the time
Good times, these proper trains are really missed amongst us cranks. Thank you for bringing back great memories and capturing them so well, great video as usual, 5*****
It comes with the Pinnacle Studio editing software and can be adapted for any length. It's actually called "Can't stop the train" which seemed appropriate!
Now that's what I call an all action Video Derek..superb as always..and a great record of the period. That sound you refer to sounds like a bell but obviously isn't, it must be that particular locos as no others cause it to happen...good luck with the answer...Bob
Amazing video, proper British traction, and I wish there was some still running, although we have got the WB64 set running now, but its not enough. I think the metallic sound was the Catenary as the 86 was running, maybe some engineering works were in order. 5* video, keep 'em coming!
Thanks - as far as I could tell it was the only loco when the noise occurred, though it's just possible there's a snatch of noise in one of the 86s towards the end of the video.
was it me or did most of the rake of Mk2 coaches had a Mk3 buffet car in them??

This is special, brings back many memories along with the HST's on the WCML :D Thanks for this!

Nice video. I think the southbound 86 at 1:04 ish is 86229 (86249 was never painted VT red). Good shot of 87024 overhauling the unit!

How i miss the fantastic scream of the Traction motors fitted on the 86/87's! Shame they got replaced by the piece of plastic crap Pendolino thingys!

I enjoyed your video and thanks for posting. I esp. like to see electric locos pushing; somewhat surreal I think.

I'm lucky! The Class 90s and carriages now run between Norwich and London (near where I live). I hope they don't get replaced by boring EMUs!

i think that metallic tinging noise on both shots of 86228 is a bell
kingofpwnage92 2 years ago
It sounds like it but, if so, where is it? I think it's probably some fitting come loose and swinging against other metal.
