I envision this song to be the song someone would play as they gather themself up and prepare to commit suice...like that last few minutes of thought. and then the final decision. and then you can totally see the lover discovering the body and holding it and crying and screaming whyyyy???!!!
The "old-fashioned acting" is magnificent! The gestures were specially learned by Tebaldi from the director Yoshio Aoyama when Tebaldi sang her first Butterflys at the Met. They are so expressive and touching.. And then, the singing is so rich and beautiful, and NOBODY gives more innocent heart to phrases such as "Chi sara? Chi sara? E come sara giunto?"
I am certainly not a convinced Tebaldi fan - I find her often shrill in sound, as well as flat in pitch in the high register, and her generic "pathos" often gets on my nerves.
But I have to admit that here (apart from the acting that is too old-fashioned to relate to in any way) the purity and power of her voice are remarkable, as is the evenness over the whole range, and the rich beauty of the sound. And finally I heard a B flat of hers that is (almost) in tune. Thank you for posting!
@MrTomsport I don't like her , so why are you throwing all your shit here? Go to your favorites to write and don't write trash and lies here, idiotic fag !

Callas and Butterfly were like chalk and cheese. Incomparable interpreter of Bellini and Donizetti, Puccini's roles were just too 'small' and vocally unsuited to her. Tebaldi was born to sing later Verdi, Puccini and other verismo operas: in these she had no rivals. End of.

@bentotheclarke because this opera was set in Nagasaki, Japan during the turn of the century, based off a true story about how an American sailor left his Japanese geisha wife. This happened alot apparently.
Thank you GermanOperaSinger for posting this great performance, exceptionally good video of the legendary Tebaldi...a class by herself artistically and and a Beautiful Creation
I 18 che hanno scritto non mi piace evidentemente non amano la lirica e non sanno distinguere il bello dal brutto. Questa è semplicemente la migliore e inarrivabile esecuzione di questo leggendario brano di Puccini.
....when I first heard her in the early sixties, it seemed like she would always be there, her voice could not be halted...but it was not to be....lucky there are recordings.....
@hazelssister the point is not about who is better. You may prefer a different artist,, but this is art... I think we should just appreciate its beauty for itself and leave the competition for sports. Comparing two artists with different techniques, voices, cultural backgrounds and history has as much sense as to say that apples are better than oranges... to each one his/her own. Let's just appreciate beauty.
My favorite version of Puccini's Opera. I have the original recording, and treasure it. Renata Tebaldi, you are a brilliant star in heaven. Many thanks to GermanOperaSinger for bringing this classic forward.
For many years Leotyne Prices' rendition of this aria was the best to me. Now I have seen Tebaldi, and I must say, she is even better than Price on this aria.
Price's voice is dark and smoky at lower notes, and very fluid and buttery at the higher notes. By comparison, Tabaldi is bright at all notes. Since Un Bel Di has a big part at lower notes, it seems to suit Tebaldi better.
And not to mention Tebaldi's beautiful act. (I didn't see Price's real act.)
The most glorious Puccini voice of all time, of course. It's so lovely to see this, which must have followed her careful work with Yoshio Aoyama on the Met production. The gestures are so lovely and sensitive. And then there's the most beautiful smile in the world. And then there's that voice.
Best soprano ever. As much as I adore Lily Pons Tebaldi is almost other wordly. I wouldn't be surprised if ykaillah is write. I have accidentally hit the wrong button on my old computer with the old YouTube format and felt like a stupid dork.
people, mostly modern opera directors, say " is it relevant to the 21 st century, how can we make it so " to justify their exorbitant saleries!!!! yesterday i was on a carusel that was built in 1881 people were queueing from 12 noon to 9pm solid for a ride , how relevent is that!! the public knows things by instinct that the experts will never understand and that is simply " THE GENUINE ARTICLE, THE REAL THING" IT DOES`NT GET ANY REALLER THAN RENATA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, I agree with friendthediva and MARISOLDEMONACO. This is a superb confection both to the eye and the ear..I met her (very, very "informal" circumstances) when she visited Ft.Lauderdale in 1967 and to me she smiled and was pleasant.(and she was NOT "fat" then........)
In her later years, as a resident in a retirement home, Renata surprised everyone at the Christmas party when she sang Ave Maria. She added, " I am old...I am fat...but, I am still Renata Tebaldi "
@APatronOfTheArts as far as i know Renata was never in a retirement home she was able bodied and with the help of "Tina" would have been independant right to the end.
And what is this myth about Callas being "the great actress" and Tebaldi did not even belong in this category? What amazing acting and stylistic expression in this short clip. Thank you, Renata. From one who really actively dislikes Madama Butterfly.
@marghe19 è vero!!!!! Ma anche la scena finale cantata da Anna Moffo/Callas la trovo bellissima: loro sono le mie 3 butterfly preferite^^ tutte davvero brave a modo loro, ognuna ha qualcosa di unico!!
And nevertheless Maria Callas is the best madama butterfly! Maybe Renata's vocal is better but Maria sings and even amateur meloman understands what is the opera about! I
You can admire Reanta without mentong other singers
Not that I mind the way you mention Callas, but Moffo's Butterfly was 'apparently' (as the same 'electronic processing' applies to all 3, in fact Moffo is the earliest of the them) quite spectacular, it launched her into stardom - if that is light, than Tebaldi is unbalanced... taken in the nuances and dynamics it lacks
hate to say it here (i'm in a wrong temple, apologies to Tebaldi fans) but the standard for this aria would be Kabaivanska
Tebaldi sings Butterfly better than Callas. Tebaldi uses a more meaningful expression of sadness, gentility and grace. She is Butterfly. I really love it.
Thank you "GermanOperaSinger," She was magnificent! To be an opera freak, to pursue such an experience live, is what it is all about. Live, which is 10 times even fuller, will only occur few times across scores of attendances, but yes, to experience such heights of opera, even the possibility, is all that is needed. Thank you, again.
She really transformed herself and was transported into the story. Her frasing and her expression are perfect. This piece of acting is like a cherry blossom... PERFECT.
Thank you for saving this video for all to see. Cara Renata, ci sarà un altra come te?
It is so wonderful to hear and see Madam Tebaldi in her vocal prime. Her voice in this video is simply beautiful and expressive. Thanks GOS for this great post.
I'm in tears. This must have been after her close work with Aoyama at the Met. What beautiful, graceful work with her arms and hands! When her face turns sad at "e un po' per non morire al primo incontro", it is so moving. And then, that voice.
I envision this song to be the song someone would play as they gather themself up and prepare to commit suice...like that last few minutes of thought. and then the final decision. and then you can totally see the lover discovering the body and holding it and crying and screaming whyyyy???!!!

I'm in tears. This must have been after her close work with Aoyama at the Met. What beautiful, graceful work with her arms and hands! When her face turns sad at "e un po' per non morire al primo incontro", it is so moving. And then, that voice.
