I love this loco, I just grabbed on today on my lunch break. When running it on my test track though it is awfully quiet... I had to get within a foot to even hear the thing chuffing over it's internal motor. When running alongside my Bachmann 4-8-2 you can't even hear the soundFX even 6" away from the loco. I've set it to the loudest setting...is it really that quiet?
It is pretty quiet. In a club/show setting it is pretty much impossible to hear. I have mine also turned up all the way. On my home layout it is a little bit better. Operationally the challenger is great.
Loved this video. Are the front-end couplers on these new Athern Locos functional? or did you have to amend them yourself? Also does anyone else make "n" scale steam engines with functional front-end couplers? best wishes from Whitby, Ontario
Thanks for the nice comments. Those are functional couplers on the Challenger right out of the box. They actually can be turned into the pilot just like the real #3985. I'm not sure if anyone else has working front couplers. Waiting for the Big Boy now.
I want one and it pisses me off

I am planning to setup a layout with this same loco (brand new). Will it run on Atlas Code 55 track?
protikmaitra 3 years ago
yes its code 55 designed. it can climb 2 degrees. just like a real train. (if your train is too long you will need extra helper engines of course)

No, that is N Scale. Athearn made the Challenger and now the Big Boy in N scale with sound.

I dont get n scale locos are so small but they can such long trains

On the Challengers they get some help from traction tires. Thin rubber tires on two set of drivers. Plus the weight also helps.
