From what I heard, the reason they choose this auto9 as Robocop's gun was because the Desert Eagle (which they originally wanted to use) looked like a pea shooter in robo's hand, so they found the Auto 9 which looked bigger. However, in the movie because it's the future, it's supposed to be a futuristic high powered automatic pistol with Desert eagle rounds (magnum rounds).

yep, pretty much a big peace of metal on the front bottom end of the gun to help with the blow back, and another peace of metal on top with the extended barrel and barrel break at the end, can be done to a real baretta

well, he is actually shooting blanks.. See the place where he puts his left hand thumb at 00:07 just before he starts shooting? its the button where you release the slide back front. usage: when you have fired a mag empty, the slide locks back. You take off da empty mag, put a new one in and press the button to make the slide go back front. by doing this you dont have to touch the slide at all when using several mags.
