It is the debt slavery that prevails, you gotta buy a house then you need to borrow to get a bigger car, to keep up with the neighbours....Then you see they have a new big American fridge you need one too, then they have a 40 inch TV so you need one of those, then it turns into this consumerist hell, with all the discarded items, turning this beautiful planet into a junk yard from Hell......And no one asks, what is happening to the waters were all this consumerist pollution is ending up....
Great video! Though I wish you went into more detail about the loss of human identity. I live in the land *known* as the United States, but I don't call myself an American anymore. That would just be proving how civilization turns humans into tools and products.
We can provide for each other without that evil ruler $. without $ sin will decrease as will greed. as will pollutants unhealthy food and all the cut corners for $!
cities and civilization is fine. Its money that enslaves us. think not? stop working and find out. u have to work 1/3 of the day 2/3 of ur life if ur lucky.
@MasterofHardcore01 no not really if it was without the leaders we would hang all the wild ones in the center of the town.... i know for sure in black areas you would have to worry about personal space with out society..
@EugenicsChannel - I dunno... seems to me they both have the same effect, in that they're both evangelically insistent you conform or else. Civilization's beginnings were wrought with needs of outward conquest as their heavy populations required more resources for sustaining them, so they had to force more and more people outwardly to work and produce for them. The same can be said of capitalism. In fact even now we're fighting to find resources to sustain cities in areas not wanting to conform.
Remember that even this kind of life that you call slavery was a big improvement to the people who had been farmers/hunters for the last thousands of years.
Actually, no. Vaccines scared people and being FORCED to learn to read complicated their lives. History is full of records of people saying as much, ridiculing the importance the civilized put on papers and reading. It's not full of much comment on vaccinations because they were too busy remembering things like smallpox infected blankets and the diseases that wiped them out in the first place. Sorry, I don't think you can make a case for the conquered to be grateful for their conquerors.
Actually, improvement in life was possible without slavery. After all, the uncivilized improved their lives all the time, not that the civilized ever paid any attention to their progress.
I Think you meant "while" instead of "why", as in 'while you're trying to insult me for bad grammar.' I Was just trying to be sarcastic, and I love the video. You are right, I have very little class, but the slapping sound my genitals make when I expose it to strong winds, makes up for it.
Skeptical of the relevance to the western world today for the point about "end's meat." When I walk around outside I see a lot of access to wealth, luxuries and free time--hence so many of us watching videos on youtube. This is not to say that much of the world does not live in poverty, but the video does depict a "western civilization," so...
To use one of western civilization's notion of efficiency against itself, I would suggest that a 40-hour work-week (apparently for the same pay as years ago but with an increase in the price of things) seems inefficient for people (never mind other resources), especially given the advent of supposed labour-saving devices.
As for 'making ends meet', what of the apparent increasing divide between the rich and everyone else?
The 40 hour work week is a good point, but I don't buy this "growing" division between the rich and everyone else. It you are talking in strictly dollar terms, maybe, I don't know the facts. I live in Canada, except for this year I am in France, and from my experiences I see a leveling playing field. Greater access to "luxury goods," a majority of people reporting themselves as "middle-class," and none of these 19th century sweatshops (anticipating debate on this last point).
Yeah! Stick with a late neolithic agricultural society!
And then you die of malnutrition aged 32, after having had 3 children survive out of 10 pregnancies and lost your immediate family to raids by other brilliant 'uncivilized' members of society.
Civilization. I'll take one, please.
I'll take the discretion to apply an arrogant standard of moral absolutism to history myself, that's quite alright. And no, no criminal generalizations for me, thank you!
"die of malnutrition aged 32", ? does this apply to all neolithic farmers or just this particular one? Did this farmer wake up on their 32nd birthday with an unfortunate bout of amnesia rendering them unable to continue farming?
was the toothache rot responsible for the amnesia or was it present before he contracted this condition? Was there a family history of toothache rot that spread to the brain or was it contracted during one of the raids?

Your misleading impressions of hunter-gatherer society are a fantasy, they run contrary to all the available evidence and frankly, it borders on immoral to suggest that we were better off then than we are now.
I don't suppose you would be the first to volunteer to try out such a lifestyle.
Little wonder that myths, legends, and folklore about gardens of Eden, Golden Ages, Elysian
fields, lands of Cockaigne, and other primitivist paradises are a worldwide phenomenon. This universal longing for an aboriginal, unalienated state has also had its dark flip side, a remarkable continuity of apocalyptic beliefs and prophets of doom - two sides of the same coin of a deep unhappiness with civilization.
No fantasy. It was simply another way, not worse like in YOUR fantasy, not better. Which is what the evidence actually shows. And since you're obviously intentionally missing the point, it's probably a waste for me to make another, but...
I wouldn't volunteer to try out anything beyond that which I am. In the same sense, I wouldn't see the reason to force them to either. So forced civilization is unnecessary and cruel. And that is the actual point.
I wish I could take credit... the YouTube user IrreverentFilms made this. It featured at Tucson's short film fest long ago, and I was pleased to be there to see it. I simply had to feature it on my site.
What a bunch of hypocritcal, slanted BS. A knock on civilization that is so slanted that it couldn't even be objective. Without civilization you'd have Haiti or Somalia conditions in every nation. The problem is ignorant/incapable people trying to run nations. The UN's Human Development Index shows quite clearly where the educated and civilized peoples reside and where the ignorant savages live. But don't lose hope-'bama gonna save da world! HA HA HA
Not objective... agreed: it is the view of countless conquered and enslaved peoples who, uncivilized, did just fine before civilization moved in and forced them to assimilate. They never HAD Haiti or Somalia conditions until then. And as far as I've ever seen, ONLY ignorant and incapable people have ever run a nation in this way.
Way to prove yet again who the ignorant savage truly is. You. Your kind.
And what this has to do with Obama or US politics is beyond me.
See I hope so, but I don't think it'll be a taste of how great it IS, since it hasn't been. I think if anything we have the chance to see how great it can become, if we change the direction it's been going. I do indeed hope so. But I'd be lying if I said there was much hope.
Please, answer: when Derrick and you people talk against civilization, are you talking about coming back to the Stone Age or evolving to something like ecovillages? I think the first choice is stupid, while the second one is perfectly fine and I'd like to see that in my lifetime (it is not very unlikely due to the peak oil). Coming back to the Neolithic makes not sense to me, since we have achieved good things in our civilizations, like medicine and high art.
Coming BACK to the Stone age? No. Because you and I are not qualified to live that way. We have forgotten how to survive like that. So for our own survival, the rest of the world must be drained of all resources. (The problem there SHOULD be obvious, but is not.)
There are many peoples who do wish to return to that way of living, and I hardly think they're stupid for that choice. It does in fact make sense, as it's life WITH the earth, which they considered sacred. They see our way as insane.
Our civilizations at first called medicine witchcraft and religious believed it should be banned and destroyed. As for art... the trouble is that you said "high" art. Art is universal. We simply consider our art as worthy, or high, and their art as silly and primitive. But even if we did have a monopoly on art, it's silly to destroy the world but feel okay cuz we have pretty pictures. They considered the world art. Why destroy that, but put a picture of it in a living room?
The real issue of it being decided by you just now that the ecovillage is "perfectly fine" is that very few are choosing this. And in fact, who's to say what everybody has to do? The issue is that all people everywhere are forced to live THIS way, in money-making and consumerism. There is no one-right-way to live.
Looking at your question, you seem to ask what all-people-everywhere-must-do, as though there can be only one. And THAT is the trouble we're having.
Ok, I asked the wrong question, that's true. I didn't want to figure out what people should do, I was just asking you about your opinions. When I wrote "coming back to the Stone Age makes no sense to me", I'd rather should write "coming back makes no sense FOR me". I don't want that, I couldn't live that way any more, but if some people want to live that way, I think it's perfectly fine! But it is not my cup of tea. I'd like to live in a world of ecovillages, but I wouldn't force anyone to.
And that's better... in fact tribal living will most likely appeal to more people, in villages and such, and that doesn't denote "primitivity" of technology at all. This isn't a preaching where I'm trying to say how people everywhere must live because any deity told me so or anything, believe me.
But if I as a member of the living community need others to stop polluting my water or air, it's for survival, not just have a hissy fit over so-called god-morals. No sanctimonious attitudes here.
And tribal peoples have no qualms with technology, as I said... that was from religious civilized people. Tribals only require it doesn't ruin their quality of life... a criteria we should've all used. Jerry Mander mentions how our waves of enforced technology only presents itself in positives, and ignores its negative effects. Check, however, the Etowah tribe who existed in northern Georgia, and their fishing traps. They were unobstructive to life, but made daily work easier. I'm ALL for that!
Very well done!! My compliments. The visual clips were well prepared. Indeed, this is happening a lot. Actually, it was a lot worse 150 years ago where we "owed our soul to the company store," as the song put it.
But the NWO have plans for returning to such times and with a lot less people. The Haig-Kissinger Policy spells that out rather well. Enjoy now while you have it, it's not gonna last too much longer.
ths cake is 3.50$- i dont trust your currency man. could i just have it free?- no il call the police. see what i mean.we are the mass. they are the part of the iceberg that we see off the water. time to unleash the sunk part. to the surface. and time for the above all part to sink like it never did.
capitalism is actually a good way of life. our problem however, is the lack of maturity of our leaders.(or what they called themself)
cooruption, lies and all the other bs we dont know about. poor ppl cant change the world. they are seen as terrorism if they even try. rich ppl are heros. but seriously, its not a rich person whos gona care about our future right? theres very little we can do for changing the world. but there is thing we can do. and it take time.
I know the feeling man. What makes me even more depressed is how few care. If you do though, keep in mind we are few, but we are dedicated, and we must band together!
Uh, I think Capitalism has claimed the highest amount of civilians dead for the past 400 years, and here are a few examples WWI, WWII, Vietnam, etc. CaseClosed. And when you refer to "communism" of the twentieth century, you mean state dictatorship, with a simple label of communism, just like western civilization now is a state dictatorship with democracy label.
Okay, so you only count human dead, do you? Let's see... capitalism has exponentially increased civilization's already fast destruction of the living community, but humans are all that matters, right?
I didn't see noble savage theory, dumbass... but your way of life is not the only way to live, and sure as hell ain't superior, and that's all that's being said here. It's not a shout out to communism or capitalism or ANY ism. Just a truth: there's no one-right-way for all people to live.
Before you start throwing numbers around for people who have been killed in the process of promoting a specific way of life think about how many have been killed in the name of religion.
People are the reason's communism is not directly responsible for the deaths of millions it is in our nature to kill. Evil men, in control of military's , not used in defense of ones people's, but in the murder and genocide of there own and the pursuit of spreading there ideology, Thank you communist, dictators.
Noble savage myth? Nope... A, giving respect to a people does not equal calling them angels. They lived a way that worked for them. Do I have to have a myth tell me they should've been left alone?
Disparaging the troops? Oh... well... I guess they're angels that should be left alone, no matter how many innocent they kill, right? Wait, did we just come full circle?
As for communism, it's just another form of CIVILIZATION the highest scorer of dead. So I don't get how it's a shout out to that.
Ignore dipsh*ts like double-o bill. That was a f*cking brilliant piece of work, and if I knew how to upload Sh*t to my computer, from YT, I'd own it. Favorited 130 times, after I grab it. Haters are wastes of life, who will sometimes create new accounts (just to hate) if ya block 'em.
I expect as much. I kick 'em off because I've no interest in debating these things or having ignorant flame-wars. I think it's time for true intelligent convesation about these things, and the first sign someone is incapable, the door closes hard.
BTW, thanks for favoriting, and make sure to let the user IrreverentFilms know that you appreciate it... my films are one thing, but I really stand in awe of this one of theirs
Again folks, I did not make this video... the YouTube user "IrreverentFilms" did. I merely felt it needed to be passed along because I thought it was brilliant and funny, and satirical too. It's also my sentiments exactly.
BTW: I'm NOT anti-progress. I see no reason for using "progress" to make everyone have to work hard and have no time to enjoy it.
I'm NOT anti-technology, but against such mass production of it to the detriment of our living world.
By the way, to the dillholes who think it's funny to try to tell me to go back to spear-chucking and shit, thinking that's actually supposed to be some kind of intelligent response, I'm not here to debate or insult. You will be banned instantly when you do that crap. You only show yourselves for the morons you are. And that whole think where you give thumbs up to criticism posts... about as mature as a Pauly Shore film. But... since you've no lives other than to do that, enjoy. Then die. Thanks
I actually did not make this video. Mine hav ea similar theme, but the maker of this one is username: IrreverentFilms, who should have and almost won at a short film contest in Tucson not too long ago with it. I located it as quickly as I could and put it right on my site. By the way, to see more, visit thestumblingblock com
If I take you up on your invitation, do you promise to keep civilization from following me and to leave me and the remainder of the natural world alone?
If you can't or won't make this promise, then your invitation is meaningless and I will continue to stay and fight civilization with the tools of civilization.
Civilization is the cancer, it needs to be removed, not the healthy people who want to preserve it for future prosperity.
Okay, you demonstrate clearly ignorance and then try to sarcasm your way out of it? I'm not the only one who sees this, and if you have to attack me personally, you've already lost. This comes to you from a corn-fed southerner, by the way.
If there were anything of sense in anything you just said here, I'd really actually give it a go in discussion. But no. You've gotta be a prissy bitch. Why don't you just go back to your pretty pictures, k, pumpkin?
Cool. Just that lots of us don't, and we didn't want to be forced to live in it. Sadly, history has shown that the powers that be in civilized societies don't allow for choice, so as to prevent people from realizing there are alternatives, so that they'll stay and work for them. That's how it all formed, and that's actually how it still functions today. We just want it to release that and let indigenous peoples and those not content choose a different way is all.
i bet america just doesnt understand an obviously forward-thinking progressive person like you. i'm sure the Chinese lettered shirt, drum beating, aTHEism, and crazy beard don't always go over so well with the locals, but that's OK, you're different. you're the exception, seeing the light that we corn-fed simpletons don't. just because you're stuck in the ass end of the US and not contributing to the society from which you take so much doesn't mean you're a failure or by any means a waste.
it means that you're the lowest filth imaginable, churned out by the machine that you think you hate. the only thing worse than a conformist is someone who conforms to the mold of non-conformity, and by god you've got admirable definition. i bet you think your loins burn with desire for "revolution" or "world peace" or some other lofty unrealistic rhetoric preached by icons who were (ironically and laughably) propagated by corporate barons just to make a profit off of detestable scum like you.
in the end, I am forced to agree with you on some level. the fact that you exist simultaneously a) affirms the inherent immorality of industrialized capitalism in its deleterious effects upon the genetic stock of the race as a whole, as in pre-industrial society you would have died long before reaching adolescence, being both physically and socially incapable and b.) denies the existence of an ordering force in the universe
Only thing I'll say is, once again, there's no dishonor in dying. There is dishonor in killing everything else, which you clearly don't care about.
All I care about is that we don't ALL want to be forced to live this one-right-way that you're trying so hard to champion is best for everyone. But thanks to arrogant assholes like you, we don't have that choice. Your kind have seen to it quite nicely.
The worst scum are those who believe in holocausts with zeal. And you've proven to be just that.
The video above didn't even say it was any of that. It just said civilizatin isn't the only way to live. And it's not.
The indigenous didn't conquer YOU and tell YOU how you have to live or else. That's what your kind did. If it's so superior, why may I ask did they not allow other peoples to live too? Why were the alternatives eradicated? WEre you not secure enough in your supposed superiority?
You say for me to remove myself from it. Where would I go? Everywhere is already conquered. Hello!
If you claim this isn't art, I should remidn you Civ's definition of art is creativity for political statement or change. If you are content and don't need change... then, how is art "advanced"? Isn't it a sign of not being advanced? Of being in need of change?
Surprise: Your way of life is not the only valid way. It's not even superior in some.
BTW, brgabriel, as we're trying to have a civil (ironic, no?) discussion here, and you're incapable, you're blocked now. You got blocked with your first insult. I don't have the time to point out all your incorrect assumptions:
You assume I'm anti-technology. Did I ever say I was? indigenous cultures usually were not anti-technology... that's something Puritans often were... and they were civilized.
Also, that I'm saying civilization had to end. It just has to stop forcing everyone to live it.
And if you, a supposedly civilized man, has to resort to replying like this blithering buffoon in order to make your point and express your (insecurity) superiority, then let me award you with the Fickle Finger of Fuckyou award.
You just proved to be the true scum of the earth. I stand up for the rights of people, you insult anybody different and tell them they can't possibly have the fabulous art that you do because only you are capable of it.
They did? Wow, cuz it seemed to me they assumed (wrongly) I'm anti-technology and started saying my having a computer makes me a hypocrite. They also assumed (wrongly) that I'm anti-progress, and I simply disagree with what progress is.
If anything, they (meaning YOU) humiliated yourself by showing yourself to being argumentless other than false assumptions and knee-jerk namecalling for those assumptions.
i.e., there wasn't opposition. There was merely Dixie-Chicking. I've better things to do.
Ah yes, I wish I could go back to pastoral living where I wouldn't be able to bother myself with literary masterpieces, would frequently face hunger and probably die of a cold at age thirty... to think anyone would give up such a life!
Do you really think civilization has a monopoly on the ability of, and the creation of, artistic masterpieces? And do you realize our civilization has increased hunger to proportions that pre-civilization never dreamt of? Of course not. It's absurd, right? It is. If you don't look at the actual facts, which you're not supposed to do. 6.7 billion people, over two thirds in poverty. Vs. tribes of nomadic, pastoral, hunter-gatherers free to move where the food is, limited by it in population. Yeah.
So what is it we'd be giving up? Slavery, pure and simple. It required slavery to make all this happen, but today we like to pretend it doesn't exist anymore. Then we rush through increasing traffic to get to where we have to be so we won't be fired, so we won't be broke, so we won't be thrown out onto the streets where there is no food, because it's all owned and locked up and requires money. What would we be giving up? Guaranteed food all the time? I don't think so. It's an illusion
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No, you're giving up modern medicine, any chance for education, YouTube, and even the opportunity to critique society because you wont be sophisticated enough to know what society is or what critiquing is.
And yes, civilization has a monopoly on artistic, literary and fundamentally any type of masterpiece.
And while I could accept that there is an aggregate increase in hunger, there is not a proportionate one, especially in the last 50-75 years.
Those hunter gathers and cro-mags were also free to die when they didn't find food, which happened much more often than the admittedly sad case of an african/indian/asian starves to death today (relative to the population)
Incorrect. How much of our art comes as a plea to preserve and rejoin nature, smash the system of civilization, or is borrowed from indigenous cultures? Exactly. If you say their art isn't art, you gotta remember, our art expresses hatred for our oppression too.
Now in addition, are you aware of how much medicine, food, cultural ideals, agricultural growth processes, and so uch more were stolen from the American First Nation people? If not, try reading Indian Givers by Jack Weatherford.
You saying it's best to have a system of slavery than natural death? So they die of starvation sometimes. We'll all die from carbon emissions of oil use. There is no dishonor in death, but there is in global murder.
The only trouble is, we're smart enough not to have that happen, and not have it happen on the backs of the rest of the living population, but we won't, AND, we won't let anybody else live that way either.
We don't have a monopoly on finding solutions to survival problems, ya know.
Just starvation? How about diseases and murder? And I hope you don't mean to say that there wasn't any slavery in, say, Africa, before it was colonised!
And if you would rather live in a society where no laws protects your property your rights your safety and you have access to no medicine and live in stark ignorance, BY ALL MEANS BE MY GUEST you hypocrite.
Look, this could've been a decent discussion till you began with name calling. We're in a land where laws protect NO rights, except that of the rich already. Get a clue. What laws protected those who didn't want to be wage earners? None. It doesn't protect, it enslaves.
Nobody here said anything about civilization having a monopoly on slavery. Nobody here said anything you're putting into our mouths. You're just trying to silence our voice.
The ultimate attempt to show how morally superior and beyond racism and prejudice one is, is to claim to hate one's civilisation and blame it for all the evils of the world in an ignorant, one-sided way.
Not one honest historian will claim that colonisation was all positive, but claiming the opposite is obnoxious. If democracy, technology and access to medical care are things you think you could do without, then FUCK OFF and don't you dare use your computer to reply to this.
Nobody cares about showing moral superiority. How about forgetting any stupid idea of superiority? How about just let be? Even in discussion your kind has to conquer and destroy. Why? Are you THAT insecure about yourself as a people that you have to destroy any alternatives?
There's no need for "FUCK OFF" just because we're expressing different opinions than yours. But you do insist you've the only way to live. You don't. YOU DON'T. YOU FUCKING DON'T! Now shut the fuck up and die. Thanks.
But you know, what does that matter? Letting the rest of the animal and plant kingdom live... who cares. You gotta have your pretty pictures. You have any idea how selfish that is?
If you hate civilization so much, I invite you to remove yourself from it.
It is so funny, because you must realize that if you actually believed these ideals, this conversation would not be taking place.
Your tone is not one of someone who really believes that society is corrupt (whereby your tone would be of despair or resignation), rather it is characteristic of someone who has failed in said society and therefore bitter and combative. It is quite impetuous and adolescent.
Thanks, but it's not my work. I posted it because I admired it too, but the work goes to the person with the YouTube username, IrreverentFilms. Make sure to let 'em know... they sure do deserve all the praise they can get
Quinn said something to this effect: don't try to change things by showing people how bad things are (they probalby already know). Try to change things by showing people how much better they could be.
I'm glad you made the video, but focus on what I just paraphrased for your next one.
I try to do a lot of that in my own vides, but "irreverentfilms" made this one, not me... although I love the satire in it. I love Quinn, and I also read Derrick Jensen... he basically says you can't even change these people with THAT. I don't know... I'd like to inspire, but people seem to work by fear and violence. Sickens me to think that.
I'll tell you what, I read Quinn, and I loved it. Yet, I really didn't realize how bad things were until I read Jensen. Quinn just wants you to "walk away" and ignore the problem. Jensen on the other hand is making a call to stop those problems. 200 species a day, we can't just ignore that.... There has to be a balance, most people don't see how bad things are, so they won't change.
I'm going to have to agree with you. There's a fire in Jensen, an anger that I kept feeling and Quinn didn't entirely help me with. He's more a metaphorical and simplistic expressionist, while Jensen is just hardcore truth upside your head. Endgame shook me to feeling better about my rage.
Yes, and just so anyone reading this does not misread what is being said. It is a healthy rage, as in rational, not to mention, necessary, and in no way misdirected. Which is important when it comes to rage, that is, to not misdirect it. Thanks again for posting this Mr. rwSpider.
Yeah, like Jensen said... mess with a bear's cub, and mama bear doesn't send waves of Loving Kindness to ya. She kicks your ass. She does it out of love for her child. That's how we need to feel about our planet! You are welcome, and there's lots more coming, I promise. By the way... did you see the film WHAT A WAY TO GO yet?
Yes, it's a great film. Although I believe Tim Bennett, the narrator, goes Quinn's route, as in "to walk away" and avoids talking about the need to "dismantle". It's a great introductory film, much like Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn, is a great introductory book. I'd still have to say people need to get their hands on Derrick's "Endgame" volumes i and ii, though. The urgency to stop this killing machine by whatever means is more important than just not participating, anymore. Look fwd to new vids!
Agreed. Don't know if you know, but Tim & Sally had a friend put up a forum for people who've seen the film. In my talks with them directly, they're definitely leaning more towards the any-means-necessary, and are becoming more convinced of what you just said. I think they didn't wanna get arrested putting that in a film or something. But screw that, cuz I'm putting it in my book, and when I remake my film, I'm gonna go HOG WILD on that shit.

Persillebalzm 2 years ago
Not to the people who were enslaved. Only to those in the master's seat.
paganbear 2 years ago
Yes, to the people who were enslaved, too. Do you think they didn't like vaccines? Being able to read?
Persillebalzm 1 year ago
Actually, no. Vaccines scared people and being FORCED to learn to read complicated their lives. History is full of records of people saying as much, ridiculing the importance the civilized put on papers and reading. It's not full of much comment on vaccinations because they were too busy remembering things like smallpox infected blankets and the diseases that wiped them out in the first place. Sorry, I don't think you can make a case for the conquered to be grateful for their conquerors.

Actually, improvement in life was possible without slavery. After all, the uncivilized improved their lives all the time, not that the civilized ever paid any attention to their progress.

A very good satire of history.
Skeptical of the relevance to the western world today for the point about "end's meat." When I walk around outside I see a lot of access to wealth, luxuries and free time--hence so many of us watching videos on youtube. This is not to say that much of the world does not live in poverty, but the video does depict a "western civilization," so...
sthprk666 2 years ago
@sthprk666
Glomerol 2 years ago
The 40 hour work week is a good point, but I don't buy this "growing" division between the rich and everyone else. It you are talking in strictly dollar terms, maybe, I don't know the facts. I live in Canada, except for this year I am in France, and from my experiences I see a leveling playing field. Greater access to "luxury goods," a majority of people reporting themselves as "middle-class," and none of these 19th century sweatshops (anticipating debate on this last point).

France is the only country where there is a decrease in the disparity of wealth so yeah not a good example.

And no, no criminal generalizations for me, thank you!
adriccv 3 years ago
"die of malnutrition aged 32", ? does this apply to all neolithic farmers or just this particular one? Did this farmer wake up on their 32nd birthday with an unfortunate bout of amnesia rendering them unable to continue farming?
JebusOGoldberg 3 years ago
Some people don't need to have everything explained to them in diagrams.
I would wager he died of a toothache rot that spread to his brain, common in the day and age when there were no dentists(I'm serious).
adriccv 3 years ago
was the toothache rot responsible for the amnesia or was it present before he contracted this condition? Was there a family history of toothache rot that spread to the brain or was it contracted during one of the raids?

"And then you die of malnutrition aged 32"
In the harshest of droughts, hunter-gatherers were seen not suffering in any way.
"having had 3 children survive out of 10 pregnancies"
Responsibility for how much you populate... what a concept! Glad we're not burdened with that idea.
"lost your family to raids by other 'uncivilized' society"
To them, war was the exception, unlike us.
rwSpider 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Your misleading impressions of hunter-gatherer society are a fantasy, they run contrary to all the available evidence and frankly, it borders on immoral to suggest that we were better off then than we are now.
I don't suppose you would be the first to volunteer to try out such a lifestyle.
adriccv 3 years ago
Little wonder that myths, legends, and folklore about gardens of Eden, Golden Ages, Elysian
fields, lands of Cockaigne, and other primitivist paradises are a worldwide phenomenon. This universal longing for an aboriginal, unalienated state has also had its dark flip side, a remarkable continuity of apocalyptic beliefs and prophets of doom - two sides of the same coin of a deep unhappiness with civilization.
Zerzan
JebusOGoldberg 3 years ago
Yeah, haven't heard that one before.

HA HA HA
shiningeye 3 years ago
My, aren't we enlightened?
Not objective... agreed: it is the view of countless conquered and enslaved peoples who, uncivilized, did just fine before civilization moved in and forced them to assimilate. They never HAD Haiti or Somalia conditions until then. And as far as I've ever seen, ONLY ignorant and incapable people have ever run a nation in this way.
Way to prove yet again who the ignorant savage truly is. You. Your kind.
And what this has to do with Obama or US politics is beyond me.

EsaEsLaChica 3 years ago
Coming BACK to the Stone age? No. Because you and I are not qualified to live that way. We have forgotten how to survive like that. So for our own survival, the rest of the world must be drained of all resources. (The problem there SHOULD be obvious, but is not.)
There are many peoples who do wish to return to that way of living, and I hardly think they're stupid for that choice. It does in fact make sense, as it's life WITH the earth, which they considered sacred. They see our way as insane.
rwSpider 3 years ago
Our civilizations at first called medicine witchcraft and religious believed it should be banned and destroyed. As for art... the trouble is that you said "high" art. Art is universal. We simply consider our art as worthy, or high, and their art as silly and primitive. But even if we did have a monopoly on art, it's silly to destroy the world but feel okay cuz we have pretty pictures. They considered the world art. Why destroy that, but put a picture of it in a living room?
rwSpider 3 years ago
With regard to your mention of primitive art.
There are many cave paintings that display a sense of perspective, a quality which was lost in western art until the 15th century.
EnormousHuntBall 2 years ago 2
The real issue of it being decided by you just now that the ecovillage is "perfectly fine" is that very few are choosing this. And in fact, who's to say what everybody has to do? The issue is that all people everywhere are forced to live THIS way, in money-making and consumerism. There is no one-right-way to live.
Looking at your question, you seem to ask what all-people-everywhere-must-do, as though there can be only one. And THAT is the trouble we're having.
rwSpider 3 years ago
Ok, I asked the wrong question, that's true. I didn't want to figure out what people should do, I was just asking you about your opinions. When I wrote "coming back to the Stone Age makes no sense to me", I'd rather should write "coming back makes no sense FOR me". I don't want that, I couldn't live that way any more, but if some people want to live that way, I think it's perfectly fine! But it is not my cup of tea. I'd like to live in a world of ecovillages, but I wouldn't force anyone to.
EsaEsLaChica 3 years ago
And that's better... in fact tribal living will most likely appeal to more people, in villages and such, and that doesn't denote "primitivity" of technology at all. This isn't a preaching where I'm trying to say how people everywhere must live because any deity told me so or anything, believe me.
But if I as a member of the living community need others to stop polluting my water or air, it's for survival, not just have a hissy fit over so-called god-morals. No sanctimonious attitudes here.
rwSpider 3 years ago
And tribal peoples have no qualms with technology, as I said... that was from religious civilized people. Tribals only require it doesn't ruin their quality of life... a criteria we should've all used. Jerry Mander mentions how our waves of enforced technology only presents itself in positives, and ignores its negative effects. Check, however, the Etowah tribe who existed in northern Georgia, and their fishing traps. They were unobstructive to life, but made daily work easier. I'm ALL for that!

Teadermin 3 years ago
Uh, I think Capitalism has claimed the highest amount of civilians dead for the past 400 years, and here are a few examples WWI, WWII, Vietnam, etc. CaseClosed. And when you refer to "communism" of the twentieth century, you mean state dictatorship, with a simple label of communism, just like western civilization now is a state dictatorship with democracy label.
clennon84 3 years ago
Lets see here... some 25 million dead thanks to communism in Russia, 65 million dead thanks to communism in China.
All the seizure of property and the execution of dissidents you could imagine will not usher in your perfect world, Comrade.

We just want it to release that and let indigenous peoples and those not content choose a different way is all.

in the end, I am forced to agree with you on some level. the fact that you exist simultaneously a) affirms the inherent immorality of industrialized capitalism in its deleterious effects upon the genetic stock of the race as a whole, as in pre-industrial society you would have died long before reaching adolescence, being both physically and socially incapable and b.) denies the existence of an ordering force in the universe
brgabriel 4 years ago

The video above didn't even say it was any of that. It just said civilizatin isn't the only way to live. And it's not.
The indigenous didn't conquer YOU and tell YOU how you have to live or else. That's what your kind did. If it's so superior, why may I ask did they not allow other peoples to live too? Why were the alternatives eradicated? WEre you not secure enough in your supposed superiority?

rwSpider 4 years ago
Oh, non-civilized masterpieces:
Easter Island statues
Aztec Calendar
Tribal tattoo body art
Rock paintings
Art visible only from the sky (beat that)
If you claim this isn't art, I should remidn you Civ's definition of art is creativity for political statement or change. If you are content and don't need change... then, how is art "advanced"? Isn't it a sign of not being advanced? Of being in need of change?
Surprise: Your way of life is not the only valid way. It's not even superior in some.
rwSpider 4 years ago
BTW, brgabriel, as we're trying to have a civil (ironic, no?) discussion here, and you're incapable, you're blocked now. You got blocked with your first insult. I don't have the time to point out all your incorrect assumptions:
You assume I'm anti-technology. Did I ever say I was? indigenous cultures usually were not anti-technology... that's something Puritans often were... and they were civilized.
Also, that I'm saying civilization had to end. It just has to stop forcing everyone to live it.
rwSpider 4 years ago
And if you, a supposedly civilized man, has to resort to replying like this blithering buffoon in order to make your point and express your (insecurity) superiority, then let me award you with the Fickle Finger of Fuckyou award.
You just proved to be the true scum of the earth. I stand up for the rights of people, you insult anybody different and tell them they can't possibly have the fabulous art that you do because only you are capable of it.

o0oWiIIiamo0o 3 years ago

Ah yes, I wish I could go back to pastoral living where I wouldn't be able to bother myself with literary masterpieces, would frequently face hunger and probably die of a cold at age thirty... to think anyone would give up such a life!
brgabriel 4 years ago
Do you really think civilization has a monopoly on the ability of, and the creation of, artistic masterpieces? And do you realize our civilization has increased hunger to proportions that pre-civilization never dreamt of? Of course not. It's absurd, right? It is. If you don't look at the actual facts, which you're not supposed to do. 6.7 billion people, over two thirds in poverty. Vs. tribes of nomadic, pastoral, hunter-gatherers free to move where the food is, limited by it in population. Yeah.
rwSpider 4 years ago
So what is it we'd be giving up? Slavery, pure and simple. It required slavery to make all this happen, but today we like to pretend it doesn't exist anymore. Then we rush through increasing traffic to get to where we have to be so we won't be fired, so we won't be broke, so we won't be thrown out onto the streets where there is no food, because it's all owned and locked up and requires money. What would we be giving up? Guaranteed food all the time? I don't think so. It's an illusion

We don't have a monopoly on finding solutions to survival problems, ya know.
rwSpider 4 years ago

NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

If democracy, technology and access to medical care are things you think you could do without, then FUCK OFF and don't you dare use your computer to reply to this.
o0oWiIIiamo0o 3 years ago

You have any idea how selfish that is?
rwSpider 4 years ago

Sickens me to think that.
rwSpider 4 years ago

Endgame shook me to feeling better about my rage.
rwSpider 4 years ago
Yes, and just so anyone reading this does not misread what is being said. It is a healthy rage, as in rational, not to mention, necessary, and in no way misdirected. Which is important when it comes to rage, that is, to not misdirect it. Thanks again for posting this Mr. rwSpider.

Yeah, like Jensen said... mess with a bear's cub, and mama bear doesn't send waves of Loving Kindness to ya. She kicks your ass. She does it out of love for her child. That's how we need to feel about our planet! You are welcome, and there's lots more coming, I promise. By the way... did you see the film WHAT A WAY TO GO yet?
rwSpider 4 years ago
Yes, it's a great film. Although I believe Tim Bennett, the narrator, goes Quinn's route, as in "to walk away" and avoids talking about the need to "dismantle". It's a great introductory film, much like Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn, is a great introductory book. I'd still have to say people need to get their hands on Derrick's "Endgame" volumes i and ii, though. The urgency to stop this killing machine by whatever means is more important than just not participating, anymore. Look fwd to new vids!
TylerDurdenInc 4 years ago
