It's way too deep to explain and I'm not saying that I'm an expert but there are lots of different ways to view Genesis and the story of creation. I'm not especially religious myself so I won't side either way but a lot of Christians say that Genesis was never meant to be true. It was supposed to explain things that "science" at the time couldn't.
