Apparently my dad went to Berklee and jammed with Michael Brecker, and when he left. And ended up seeing him Brecker play live again. He totally forgot who he was, kinda sucks
Lovely songer. I really enjoyed this, thanks. Brecker was/is amazing. one of the best saxophonists and jazz players ever but i actually loved him because he was just one of the best players ever. He played amazingly in any style. How many guys wanted or even could do that cos' it aint as easy as you might think. It took someone very open like brecker to bring that beauty to rock, funk, blues, soul, latin etc No one and I mean no one played with more soul. RIP Michael
Great, great post. Love the feel of this. Michael Brecker - GENIUS. Hard to believe he and Esbjorn Svensson are now gone. Thankfully they have left us all such a beautiful musical legacy...
Either Nils is nervous as fuck or just stonecold. Love the way he sings and Michaels solo is just.. This is the song i'm drinking myself into the abyss to.
on which part of the song are they improvising on? cause i never hear the second box of the song while they impro where the lyrics go "both afraid to say were just to far away" until "this lonely game to play"
this is my favorite version of this song not only instrumentally but the singing too because Nils is not a pro vocalist but he sings it with so much soul and he doesn't over do it like many people.
Simplemente maravilloso, colosal.¿sabe alguien si existe en el mercado la grabación en dvd o en cd de este concierto y qué discográfica lo tiene? Gracias
Thanks a lot for this video - although it reminds me sadly that two of my all time favorite jazz musicians are gone already. They went away much much to early!!!
A classic tune that every group seems to play at one time or another. Here is a textbook example of to play it well. Michael Brecker is the master showing us how it's done. A lot to be learned for this solo... Every kid learning improv would do well to transcribe it. This is a rare example of Brecker playing in a very "accessible" style.
Probably my favourite standard! One of my favourite pianists, and one my favourite live recordings, all in all... one of my favourite experience of music!
Brecker is just so damn soulful! Go Michael! I love you! One of my main influences on the sax (and I am an alto player!) along with Cannonball, Kenny Garrett and (wait for it...) David Sanborn.
bingefeller: Seriously, what's up with comments like this? He hasn't heard of Michael Brecker before - he liked his music and wants to hear more of him. What's wrong with that? I bet there was a time when you hadn't heard of him either. There has always got to be a first time you hear of someone, you know... So why the negative attitude when someone merely states that he likes the music?
You're right, but I don't see the need to be so rude. You could have just pointed him in the right direction. Anyway, there's no need to take this discussion any further.
Michael Brecker was the BADDEST white cat on Saxophone ever! He had his own voice, unlike all the sax players you hear on the radio today. They all sound alike, not Brecker. He was old school!
He has a very personnal kind of singin, it's his voice. Each is free to love it or not love it. I do, you don't, ok....but no need to say he does not sing well.
Actually I just came along by accident and I really love the way he sings it. He's a famous trombone player and not a famous singer. The way he sings it is quite personal. That's good.
...We can see how humble xas Mr Brecker - he stands up and goes to the back of the scene when someone takes a solo, instead of Nils laying on his chair while not playing.
That's because he is singing the damn song, silly! He sings the head in the beginning, takes a solo in the middle and sings the head out at the end. Do you expect him to be running back and forth all the time? That would look tacky and unprofessional. That's why they put the stool there for him. He looks relaxed, composed and professional. And it looks to me like he is hosting the show...
RIP Esbjörn Svensson

Superbe!!!
