This is nothing less than brilliant, with an appeal that transcends both age and the ages. Never mind that the songs or the person the frog is performing AS (Al Jolson) are no longer instantly recognizable to many viewers - it matters not one iota. It is every bit as appealing as it was when it was first shown in the theaters, and to me, only gets funnier over the years. Truly, a timeless masterpiece...
By my calculations and the dates on the buildings (1892 @0:42-1:02, 1955 @6:55-6:59 & 2056 @6:06-6:11) that frog would be at least 164 years old. .......Interesting :)
Darn it, that poor guy! I always wanted to take that frog and stick a gun in its face and give it the choice of sing, or else!!! I don't know why it didn't ever want to make $ for someone.
Does anyone know where you can get Bill Robert's recordings of these songs? I love not only the songs but his voice as well, and it's not on iTunes or any other music site. Any ideas?
@whaleANDoctopus I think you're stuck. They only exist in the cartoon. He wasn't really famous.
There was one other cartoon he sang in, though, which is also on youtube. It's called Little 'Tinker.
Around the 2 minute mark, the skunk opens a book which says 'The Balcony Routine', and then he sings an operatic song, which is voiced by Bill Roberts.
@JanPolska93 hell, there was a 1937 cartoon of buggs and elmer where elmer is propelled 60 years into the "future" (1997) and he had a lazer gun xD, here we are, 25 years after that date and VOILA, no lazer guns yet.
@Shakduhn - That was called "The Old Grey Hare" (1944). They were propelled into 2000 AD. Besides, it's not 2022 yet - we're just about to enter 2012.
@OldsVistaCruiser despite the gigantic technological leaps we've made from 2002 to 2012, I somehow doubt we will be at THAT level of technology by 2022.
ohh well, time will tell I guess. Thanks for the name of that episode though, I wanted to see it again and now I can look it up somewhere.
@nahdudeyercool its revealed later that he actually is immortal... in another one with michigan j frog its shown that hes lived for centuries from the cavemen to the space age with the same thing happening each time hes discovered. Hes actually a martian and his croak is martian for "Would you like to hear me sing?".
Someone I once worked with explained to me the "singing frog" phenomenon, meaning a thing that always works perfectly in your presence only, but whenever you try and demonstrate it to others, it mysteriously develops a fault. I didn't know until I saw this cartoon (one one of the 'Looney Tunes Golden Collection' DVD box sets) how the phrase got its origin!
@stiltoncheesewright ~ The singer was uncredited, and for years his identity was shrouded in some degree of mystery. Various names were proposed in the past, but the Looney Tunes Golden Collection unequivocally credits the vocals to baritone Bill Roberts, a Los Angeles nightclub entertainer in the 1950s.
The frog singing is a figment of his own imagination and for his enjoyment only. It's the man's greed in trying to capitalize on it that causes his downfall.
Kind've like most contestants on "America's got Talent". Their parents privately see their children as brilliant but once in public, they just die on stage in embarrassment.
BTW; the singing voice, manners and exuberance are a parody of Al Jolson, the top singing star of the 1920's - 40's.
I saw this endlessly in the 70's (Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show on Saturday mornings -- man, what a glorious era that was!) and early 80's (Mon through Fri afternoons from 4 to 5 :-) It was NEVER censored. Attitudes and societal mores made a helluva lot more sense then than they do now.
This has always been one of my absolute fave Golden Age Warner Bros. cartoons, alongside 'Duck Amuck,' 'Robin Hood Daffy' and 'Ali Baba Bunny' ("Hassan CHOP!") Anyone else want to beat the frog to a pulp?
The Looney Tunes Golden Collection unequivocally credits the vocals to Bill Roberts, a nightclub entertainer in Los Angeles in the 1950s who had done voice work for the MGM cartoon Little 'Tinker earlier.
"Hello! Ma Baby" is a Tin Pan Alley song written in 1899 by the team of Joseph E. Howard and Ida Emerson ("Howard and Emerson"). Its subject is a man who has a girlfriend he knows only through the telephone. The song was first recorded by Arthur Collins on Edison 5470. Lyrics: Hello! ma baby Hello! ma honey Hello! ma ragtime gal Send me a kiss by wire Baby, ma heart's on fire! If you refuse me Honey, you'll lose me Then you'll be left alone Oh, baby, telephone And tell me I'm your own!
Many critics and observers regard this cartoon short as the finest ever made. Steven Spielberg, in the PBS Chuck Jones biography 'Extremes & In-Betweens: A Life In Animation,' called 'One Froggy Evening' "the Citizen Kane of animated film." In 1994 it was voted #5 of the 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time, and in 2003 the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.
@Seaborne66 Oh i'm well aware, mate. My above comment was making a joke, working with the premise that all normal people are completely oblivious to the frogs actual talent. Trust me, I fully enjoyed this cartoon when I first saw it twenty years ago and I still do today.
@Seaborne66 This Cartoon should be in the National Film Registry along with Walt Disney's 1950 "Motor Mania" and MGM's 1939 "Peace on Earth" as the three greatest (arguably) aminated cartoon shorts ever made. All of the taught a strong moral lesson for all times.
@addyginsh I remember that censorship too. People need to stop being such pricks. I would have been SOLD at free beer and I don't give a f* how wrong people feel that is -:(
I just about died laughing during the talent agent scene when the guy starts dancing, and then he tries to make the "lifeless" frog dance. The "wimpy" version of "Hello My Baby" during that scene is what made it really funny.
I feel odd saying this, but there are way too many good Looney Tunes cartoons. You could just release them all under the title "The Best of The Looney Tunes"
This 'toon has it all! Lotsa laughs, and a moral about greed too, all without a word of dialog being spoken. (Michigan J's singing doesn't count!) I think my favorite part is the look on the face of the construction worker in the future, as the whole thing starts over again. If you want another example of masterful animated storytelling by Chuck Jones, type in "Much Ado About Nutting" (note the last word is N u t t i n g.) Enjoy!
I say the frog is a metaphorical symbolization of how outlandish get-rich-quick schemes backfire on people. Or the consequences of exploiting talents of others for your own benifit.
