  • you sould sheld the pickup cavidey with copper foil, it will cancel about 65% of the hum

  • Hi Dave,

I have A MIM Deluxe Players Stratocaster, it came with Vintage Noiseless Pickups, but i swapped them for Texas Specials, I too have a Fender DeVille Hot Rod 410, but i cannot get that dirty tone, im close, but not there yet, could it be the pickup height, or that the Strat is made of Ash wood. Also I play .12 - .58 strings.

BTW when i swapped the pickups, i left them as close to height as the stock noiseless were. I play very aggresively, and bend a lot too, but tone aint there.

  • i just love how you stop talking when you play, its like you're blanking out for a little while

  • He used Peavey amps?

  • If you want to get rid of the without noiseless pups use the 2 and 4 positions,

Srv usually did that too, they did not have noiseless pups in those days...he also liked postion 5..the neck pup....hendrix much the opposite..he liked position 1 with the fuzz face.

  • Hey Players! Have you heard of the Fender Hot Noiseless pickups? If not you should try them. They come stock in a Jeff beck strat. I think they give a great tone, no noise. Unlike the sensors...they have punch., and sensitivity. They are not as chimy as alnicos but they sound more like a single coils than duncan cool rails.

They also make vintage noiseless, which come on a clapton strat. The hot noiseless sound great with just a little gain for an srv sound. The sustain is great. Try em!

  • got 'em bridge pickup has way to little output for rock songs, it just sounds too thin. Bridge and middle are cool, but if you wanna play some seriously overdriven stuff it's better either to replace the bridge-pu by a SD CoolRail or to use an other guitar

    greets

    Joe

  • lace sensor pickups cancel the hum? for real?

  • Lace Sensor are regular single-coils. They are hum-free because of the shielding, wich prevents them from getting interference from other electronic equipment. =D

  • How do the Tex-Mex pickups sound for a Stevie tone? I know Jimmie uses those.

  • dont they make some called texas specials?

  • Unfortunately, his website is down... there's a homepage, but all the links are broken.

But the videos are still here on Youtube, which is good.

  • okay i have a strat, but its squier...

so would this sound good on my dot?

  • string bendingtook me a week with a nice vibrato and i can feel wen to stop

  • you could also get a mexican custom shop 50s road worn model strat i love em

  • P.S. SRV had a great idea having the mid pickup wound backwards.

I've had these pickup for many years and use them only in position 2 and 4.

I hate 60 cycle buzz and won;t put up with it.

  • srv had the middle pickup wound backward. The reason for this was so he could use the guitar in the second and fourth positon (selector switch) and have hum cancelling.

that is to say .............. #1 pickup is combined with the middle (backward and out of phase) (position number 2)

    Hum-cancelling

or the third pickup combined with the middle pickup (backward and out of phase)

    Hum-cancelling

  • I think texas specials aren't really that great, use Lindy Fralins or Seymour Duncans

  • SRV never used texas specials. He died before they finished making his signature strat and before they developed those pickups. His pickups were actually stock '62 pickups that were on the guitar when he bought it.

  • 1:51 haaaa

    love you dave

  • hey everyone, im looking at buying a fender squire strat. idk what model it is, its made in china. i just dont wanna get ripped off. im gonna play it soon, jus want some additional feedback.

    thanks

  • save your coin and get a second hand american custom shop,in the long run you'll save because its only another chunk that you dont have to re=spend.get it refretted with jumbos and go 12-54 ghs boomers..also get a fender tube amp, whatever you can get.don"t waste time and money

  • hey thanks man, i got a used fender strat mexican, but im still lookin for an american. also got a fender 90 watt deluxe dsp.

  • my first strat was mexican made lol i was originally going there for some other guitar but i bought into the guy tring to sell me a guitar lol... but it dosent matter cause i got me a srv signature now w00t!

  • David Taub, you are god!

  • oh and the fender amp helps too.

  • Single coil neck with two tube screamers and reverb and you have that tone! it helps to have thicker guage strings too 12s or 11s

  • David! I followed your advice, and started attacking the string harder, but whaddya know, the high E-string broke!

Good people, restring the guitar to thicker strings, THEN you may consider attacking them harder!

  • does anybody watching this vid have this strat hs using?

  • you guys have great lessons thanks a bunch!

  • I have a 2002 Fender Stratocaster Delux , which also has the Texas special pickups , I play through a Fender FM 212 R Amp . The best way I've found to get that SRV sound is to turn up the Volume , put the reverb on 8 , put the switch on the guitar on the neck pick up , and dig in and play flat out .

  • the texas special pickups were,i believe, originaly developed for the srv signiture guitar made by fender.

  • The cheapest way I found to get that tone is some reverb on the hendrix wah I get it nice i'll post it 6 mode on it green. easy nice glassy tone just like it. Ebay 80 bucks. I use humbuckers and get the tone with that.

  • I have a Mexican Strat with a Seymour Duncan Jazz Model humbucker in the bridge position. My middle and neck pickups are standard single coils. Should i change them out? what do u think?

  • Sorry, that's just not true. Regardless the price of the gear, the player will shine through.

Case in point, I read an interview with Setzer, and he played some stuff through Stevie's rig. He sounded like Setzer, not SRV.

  • Gear is a huge part of tone thats the truth...but not all of it, not even close

  • Hey Dave. when you put the texas specials in that guitar, did you do it yourself or have it done by a luthier?

  • this guitar came stock with the texas specials

    roc on!

    DT

  • Thanx. Rock on!!

  • Ok, thanx!

  • Hi Dave. Im having a huge problem. On pride and joy it has a "Shuffle" thing. Got any advice on how to do it. Ive watched some of the videos on youtube and they arent explaining what you have to do

  • @WEIRDALROXMYSOX its simple soldering

  • I love your videos man. Tonight I was sitting back having a couple of whiskies, and it was like you were chewing the fat (aussie slang: "talking about") SRV in my living room.

Dig your informal style and enthusiasm, thanks mate!

  • could i get a good sound out of a fender hot rod deluxe

  • Dude I like you videos, but several of your details are not quite accurate. SRV didn't use a Texas special pickup. Just show 'em how to play! Keep up the great work!

  • srv played up to 18 gauge strings not 12. he played on 13s mostly.

  • srv didnt play with texas specials

  • According to Rene Martinez-Stevie's guitar tech-Stevie's "Number One" guitar (the one that was beat up the most) was pretty much a completely stock strat from 1959, or 1962/63 depending upon which article you read. He never played on Texas Specials and it was said his pickups weren't overwound at all--that is merely a p/u myth.

  • '59 pickups, 62 neck, 63 body.

  • chriscoooley, that might be cus' he try to show how other artist's plays..

  • you're pretty good and all. but your lessons are too general. be more specific. and for the love of God, learn to play Cold Shot correctly. otherwise you rock

  • Hi - thanks - but I am not trying to play cold shot - I just played an ispired by rhythm but its not cold shot -

    rock on!

    DT

  • hey dave. i think you should teach us a song, or just make something in your inspired by series that is inspired by you. i think a lot of us would like to see YOUR style.

  • i agree i've been watching ur videos for a while and i dont know wat u sound like

  • Dave, new guitar? Fender sponsering you now? I hope so. You deserve some support. Keep it up.

  • Hi - no, I had this guitar for a long while - bought it new in NJ back in the mid 90s or so

  • I have Texas Specials in my Strat, they are awsome pickups and I enjoy them a whole lot, but Stevie didnt use em. He just used the stock ones on his '59 Strat which were slightly over wound apparently.

  • Hey man can you do a video showing the gear that you use. I made a request to you asking this a while back before TheNextLevelGuitar got suspended, if you can just try to squeeze it in.

  • How do you spell the name of the company that makes the noise-cancelling circuit-board?

  • circuit board to eliminate the 60 cycle hum is made by SUHR -

  • Oh, thanx & rock on!

  • Ok, thanx & Rock On, man!

  • He used ts-9s and ts-808 (they come cheaper new :D)

  • I love the way you teach, it's not boring but yet it really is getting you to the next level. =)

  • Thanks Dave, you;ve been putting a lot of helpful vids up lately

  • second close

  • First wow.
