When the pan is dropped, and the filters are off, you should see a hole about the size of a quarter, where you can use a screw driver to rotate the torque converter until you can see the drain plug. Remove this plug, and you can drain the torque converter as well.
Tip - *ALWAYS* wear safety goggles/glasses when underneath a car and it can prevent your eyes/vision being damaged from falling rust, dirt and grime from getting into your eyes. You only have one pair of eyes, so take good care of them.
rtv its easier to get a gasket and they work better then they look just use the rubber ones because cork leaks easier and falls apart, rtv would be my last resort and you have to scrub old stuff off every change with rtv.
Shouldn't you install the screw in filter only hand tight as you do with an oil filter? It seems like you really cranked it down using that pipe wrench or even had you used any wrench.

I only bought 5qts worth, because I followed the Haynes manual and it said to start off running it with 2qts and add as needed. I've only added 4qts and it makes some noises when I run it through the gears, I have a hard time reading the level on the dipstick because the fluid is so clear. You think I should keep adding fluid until the noise stops?
@crones99 - The key is to get the dipstick as clean/dry as you can. Because it is so clear, you will look for the "wet" line on the dip stick. The thing with auto's is that you can kill a tranny by both not having enough fluid and by also having too much. I would highly recommend at the very least stopping by a local oil change place and get them to check out the level for you. I ended up using around 6~7 quarts in total. @Videos1970 - Well, it has been about 50k miles and all is still working well! You will be able to tell what the seal is because it is noticeably different than the metal housing of the transmission. I have done these many times, I am shocked you talked about the drain plug and did not actually install one! They are B&M brand $6.00 each from Summit Racing. I always have an extra in my tool box in case I do a buddies job. If you overfill it makes it so easy to remove some not to mention future changes. Thanks, great video!
@bleednjeep I know, I know! I was kicking myself that once I started that I had forgotten to pick one up! I am thinking of putting on one of the quick drain valves that they make for engine oil - I have one and love it. Now to just get one for the tranny!
If you use cork gasket (instead of just gasket maker) and rtv gasket then place your bolts down while the cork dries.... let set up for 15 minutes it seals much better and all the holes line up nicely... Also I agree that your life would have been much easier if you lifted it about 4 inches more.. Thanks for the info great job....

About ready to do mine, 98 Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2L, the info will help but I believe mine has a couple of bands to adjust and no spin on filter. Good work..

@prettytony882 - Yeah, a good flush and even filter change might do the trick. Of course it could also do more damage. If a trany is going, sometimes the friction material that used to be on the bands that wore off that is now in the oil is the only thing keeping them going. I say change the filters and then flush it, though. Good luck!

@snf09 - Thanks! It is a small pry tool that looks like and upper case "T" that you can use to pop it out. They aren't that expensive, I just forgot to get one and didn't feel like walking the three miles to the autoparts store to get one. :)
it may have been a good idea to tape the pan on when you were putting it back on. Ha but i dont know much about car maintenance so maybe not. just a thought.
I think you can also buy gaskets for them now instead of using the RTV. I usually hit the valve body with brake parts cleaner to get all the dirt off as well. I have the CRD and I think our tranny has a rubber gasket and only one filter. Good video though. Looks like a nice setup you have going in the garage.
Thanks for the heads up - someone on one of the boards said that they make the gasket now, but I had this sitting around for a while, so I just stuck with it. I'd love to see some vid's of your CRD - I bet that thing is a beast with that much torque!
Great video series on changing your transmission fluid! I changed my fluid in my Ford Expedition and it was easier. I had a drain plug, only one pressure fit filter and a reusable pan gasket. You could have drilled a hole in your pan and welded on a nut for a drain hole. I saw that on the Xtreme 4x4 show. Great job! Totally XTREME with an X and not an E!

@Theogrn even duct tape would have a hard time sticking to anything under a truck they tend to be covered in a greasy film and or dirt!
