Thankyou for Uploading this. Its a stunning recording and video of 3 of the most important musical people around. Cavaille-Coll. Messiaen, and of course Weir.
Messiaen is perhaps more enjoyable for a musician to play, than leaning back and listen to, I guess. But this is great music, no doubt, and excellent performed
Excellent performance! I must admit that it took me a while to appreciate Messiaen's music(and probably will take me another long while to fully sense the depth of his work).
@TrombaMilitare16 you really have to be open minded to like all of bachs stuff. i will admit i dont like all of bachs stuff i only like some. no matter what every composer is a genious. my favorite piece is the widor 6th symphony allegro. that piece has so much dynamic and so much stuff in it its truely a masterpiece.
the organ sounds great but the piece is horrible. sounds like a bunch of random stuff put together. thats ussually a lot of messiaens works. no offence but to me his works sound like a cat letting lose on the keyboard.
What a sound! Possibly the ideal organ for this piece, despite its lack of playing aids. However, this is not really the best performance I've heard. God bless Dame Gillian, who has always been a fabulous musician and an exceptionally nice person, but she didn't always understand Messiaen. This performance feels rushed at the end - contrast Ian Ball's performance, where he holds each of the last chords for a LONG time, as Messiaen intended - it's far more effective for it. watch?v=dsOc1-bR5jc
BBC recording for the series 'The King of Instruments' from the 1980s. Still sounds good on DVD. Also interesting coverage of this fantastic Abbey church, considered by John Ruskin to be Europe's finest example of Gothic architecture.
