  • basking shark

  • that ain't a whale. i can tell it by the tail. maybe it's a whale shark, but that ain't a whale.

  • shark

  • I agree with Mdenholm15

  • I agree with Mdenholm15

  • this is a shark... Who ever said it's a whale needs to read up on the difference between the two. Whales have a tail fin that move up and down. Where sharks have one that move side to side like the one shown in the video, along with the extra notch of fin at the top. Making it a Shark...

  • whALe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • -whistle- Wow.... We got on the ferry to Okracoke and saw Dolphins.... but WHALES?!?!?

  • I think it is a shark also. Whales only come into the warm waters during the winter months to breed, and then they migrate back up north.

  • and you never ever miss spell anything. RIGHT?

  • Thats what that says.

    so whos the tard now???

  • where at exactly is us

  • eh, looks like a shark... probably a basking shark, I saw one in south Nags Head late 2008, 25-30 foot, looked a lot like that one. Could be a whale, but too small and little chance that you would see one on the OBX IMO

  • a Whale is NOT a fish it is a Mammel.

  • So cool. Why didn't you swim with it? They're gentle animals believe it or not.

  • man thats a shar HOLY SHIT

  • oh how cool! Beautiful.

  • Very, very cool vid! Thanks for sharing... We just moved to Nags Head (8/08) and plan our life around walks on the beach... PCLVNJY!

  • I'm moving there in a few months too ^_^

  • That's a BASKING SHARK, 100% sure thats a basking shark, I'm from that area and have seen them that close to the beach before. (whale ahahhaah). Cool video, you guys should gotten a mask and swam out there and looked at it, they're filter feeders, they won't hurt you. Basking sharks are something like the second biggest fish in the world, i dunno look them up they're pretty cool.

  • A Basking Shark likely. Whales have horizontal tails. This shark had a vertical tail, the same direction (up) as its dorsal fin. Which btw looked kind of odd, like it'd flopped over. I guess that'd be possible if it had a tall dorsal fin.

But yeah, those are large "fish!" There's also the whale shark, another docile shark which grows very large, but for the most part are gentle and uninterested in bothering people. But I don't know if any are seen on the Outer Banks.

    Peace,

  • stupid whales arn't fish they're mammals fucking stupid

  • aren't you the smart one...

  • i love nags head we go there evry year me and my 11 cousins weve senn dolphins buy a whale???

  • COOL i live in coralla Ya know where the rented houses are that are ocean front? One of them is where me and my family live and In the 11 years Ive been Alive i have seen a whale 12 times! IM SO GLAD OUR HOUSE IS OCEANFRONT!! ;)

  • That would be awesome to live in Corolla on the beach. Thank goodness you guys don't have alot of beach erosion like places in Kitty Hawk. Not sure how much beach they lose a year but it seems like alot.

  • nags head's beaches are just getting smaller and smaller :( the beach is only 20 feet from my home there, it used to be twice as far.

  • LMAO!!! A sandbar shark?!?! 1. You mean Sand Shark or Dogfish. 2. How many Sand Sharks or any sharks other than Great Whites or something that get that big? 3. Not too many sharks could get beached in 6 foot water.

i got to OBX every year, we stay in Frisco for about 3 weeks. We stay at Frisco Woods Campground then we stay at a really nice hosue. I love the Outer Banks.

  • yes a sand bar shark, look it up, look at the picture, compare the tails.

  • sorry to tell you guys this....but that is not a whale. if you don't believe me.....why don't u go up an touch it. that is most likely a sandbar shark. A SHARK!

  • That's insane! We usually see dolphin but a whale? It does almost look like a shark, but whenever you see a fin... it's easy to flip out... I just didn't realize whales came so much against the surface, though, I've been out in that ocean for years and I know it's very shallow throughout that whole way. Whatever happened, was he beached or did you never stay around long enough? I'm curious lol.

  • He was semi beached but after maybe 15 min. he was able to free himself and went back out to sea, lol the life guards at mile post 8 didn't know what the heck to do..

  • That's good. It would be so sad if a whale was beached at Nags Head. I always stay down in Avon and swim there or Buxton and there is never a lifeguard on duty so people would probably freak out. That is just really awesome though, this video I mean lol.

  • there is life gaurds on those beaches? maybe cuz i went in the off season or i was at a different place

  • that's crazy. the water looks gorgeous

    <3

  • holy crap man not very often u see that at nags head. great footage.
