This is so very lovely! I could watch this one clip the whole day long. There is no higher art than yours Sujata. Matchless. Thank you. And the music as well. Heavenly!
I strongly agree with the person who says that Odissi is MUCH harder than Bharatanatyam. Not only it is harder, it is much more graceful and beautiful than any other dance form. Sujata's strikingly lovely face and expressions are mind capturing. Her unusually graceful movements raised Odissi to a level hetherto unknown. It is heavenly to look at her performances. . She is undoubtedly a great gift of God to the lovers of Odissi. SUJATA DASGUPTA.
@67rev i might have said odissi is harder than bharatanatyam but that doesnt mean that bharatanatyam is crap as you put it. these two dances each have their own highlights and hallmarks which should be appreciated.
she could awaken every temple carving across Odisha...it is like an exposition of angaharas and karanas...wish someday i'll be blessed to see this child in a chamber performance...God bless
Aside from being about the best Odissi dancer around, Sujata is simply lovely to look at; her face and eyes are hypnotic. You will recognise her moves and positions on temple carvings thousands of years old.
@BahamaUncleLee In a lot of way yes. Coordinating the body into alternative triangles is very difficult while trying to maintain balance and fluidity. Except Odissi dancers, even in the most energetic of pieces, do not require the fire and speed which is commonplace in Bharatanatyam. The B.dancers have to master the straight posture, the deep sit, and often times deep lunges and high kicks. Both are challenging in their own ways.
@halfrek as a student of both styles - both have their beauty - and while Odissi involves the whole body, it's posture is rounded - and you MUST move your body to the direction your torso moves. This is not easy. Bharata Natyam keeps very straight posture, with straight arms. Also, you have to keep your feet moving while your hands tell the story with hasta mudras. Both are extremely challenging.
@dpinvogue I am also a lover of Odissi. By what you said it implied I did not understand the incredible difficulty it takes to be an odissi dancer. I just wanted to assure you that is not true ;) Bharatanatyam is a lot faster though in general, its supposed to be, being a dance of fire. Odissi is more like water-very fluid and ballet like
@ashbud2009 yet... this video captured all of her eyes work and facial expressions... which are stunning beautiful ;) beside, she has one of the most graceful hand gestures I've ever seen...

The footwork from 2:10-2:25 looks really difficult to do smoothly and she make it look effortless.
