The enquiry at the end of the movie makes no sense to the plot. Don't they still have the machine? Doesn't it still work? Aren't they planning on sending another person to try it again or see what happens?
@RobertMOdell The end of the movie is simple, "Small moves". They still have the machine. Yes, it does still work. Perhaps, they'll send someone again in the near future. Perhaps one of "them" will come to Earth.

@samluvzcc I think the problem is that ordinary radio signals break up before they make it 1 or 2 light years from earth. The only reason nebulae look like anything to us is because they are millions of miles across and their light photons they emit form a visual pattern on a telescope lens.

I assume if we had a radio source as large as a star or galaxy which we can see from Earth this wouldn't be an issue... but our commercial radio transmitters are no more than a certain number of meters in size and about 100,000 watts of effective radiated power (ERP).
