I heard the Wailin' Jennys from Canada perform this song in 2006 on NPR's Prairie Home Companion and have loved it ever since. One version of the story accompanying the song supposedly describes a dying civil war soldier in an Atlanta Hospital who is being visited by his sister, Sylvie. Another version involves an African-American slave in a cotton field appealing to his wife, Silvie. For me at least, the lyrics, the harmony and the performance are haunting and unforgettable.
I have chills right now... I didn't think anyone could sing this song better than Sweet Honey in the Rock, but the Jennys knock this one so delicately out of the park.
One of my favorites! Love the harmony.

There are really awesome. A year or two they came and performed for my college choir and they taught us the harmonies of this song. It was awesome.
