Amongst film junkies and people within the film industry Wes Anderson's films are infamous. It's a type of underground popularity that I don't see dying out anytime soon.

Many actors will do films like this to improve their "street cred" amongst fellow people in the industry. It's good to get away from the monotony of predictable mainstream films and indulge in creativity. The aim isn't entirely money or fame driven.

Something I wouldn't expect the general public to understand.

The problem with "society" is that when they see a movie, they just want to be entertained. They don't want to figure anything out, they want to be given 2 hours of in your face whatever, i.e. Action, Drama, Comedy, Horror, whatever, they want it obvious. No Country For Old Men is another that comes to mind... I work at a video store and I hear mixed reviews, more negative, on this movie. And for the life of me I can't figure it out.
