Have your camera recommendations changed in the last two years? Would you still recommend the XL2 or something HD in the same price range? Just curious because I'm going to upgrade to something bigger for use with Final Cut and don't know what to get.
i think it's awesome that you're encouraging others to get up and start making movies! and i really like the fact that the american flag is on ur wall :)
I'm an aspiring film maker as well. I'd like to know what software you use to edit your movies, as well as if you ever went to school? I'm just curious. I'm currently saving up for a camera, and my main focus is going to be music videos and primarily editing. I love your videos and this one is awesome, and very insightful and perfect for someone like me.
thanks dave. i just recently discovered a lot of your work, starting with your facebook movie, and i'm already a big fan. whatever you make, i'll be sure to give it a look. ive been doing a lot of amateur film making myself and like you said, each film i make gets better and better. i've already made a name for myself locally by making videos with my friends and doing awesome video projects for school, and i'm looking forward to improving on myself even more. again, thanks a ton for the advice!
THIS IS HOW I FEEL ABOUT COMPUTER ANIMATION. I have been working on 3D modeling and effects in my school. Hopefully I will be able to get a career in this kind of thing.
sweet!!! which one? if you're just an amateur (like me, lol) wanting to make some movies with friends, i would strongly recommend the SONY DCR-SR.32! if you're really a hardcore producer, i'd use the CANON XL2 (the one dave mentioned).!
Cool advice Dave. And you don't even need a good amera or editing stuff which is quite pricey. I just use the movie function on my digital camera and Movie Maker!
i was feelin a little, shall we say, pessimistic of late when it came to my films, not finishing any, etc... i was in the middle of one and then i just stopped! but thank you, it was inspirational, i think you're doing great, and for someone who started out on your own, you really have made the best of it! you're great! thanks a million, and check out "The Scourge" when it's finished! -Vincent
Davveee its Nate how are ya man Love this video saw it in my subscriptions today...youd think it would be hard to explain in 5 mins how to get your feet wet in video making but you do an awesome job here. It also gives regular people like me inspiration knowing we dont need some big time Film School to make a decent movie or even a great movie. Keep up the good work Dave
I agree, but everyone coming up needs to know that you absolutely don't need a film school to have a career and become successful. There is so much out there telling people traditional film school is the only way, but we live in an exciting new generation of web 2.0 and technology-- you just don't need it. (but it's okay if you want it!)
your videos rule!! I love making videos, I just need a camera, I don't have any videos up, but I have made some. Your right, they do suck at first, but they do get better!
Dave... you + me + a youtube video about haters = Genius...lets do this... Glad I could go to film school today... I just printed out the diploma and my parents just wrote me a check for $40,000. thanks - Big Bro
david, the more you grow as an artist, the more i like you. and i've always appreciated your style to begin with. i too, along with my team are in the process of aquiring our own gear. xl2, soft boxes, hot lights, a mac pro, and final cut. so like yourself, we are taking the road less traveled. you're the man david. keep it up.
do you have any tips for convincing my parents to pay for my film making?
they only make like 45000 a year together so im afraid theyll say no when i ask for 40000 but i realy have a good idea about a dog with a suit who has no friends but i dont no if theyll understand???
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
wait wait wait
where does this guy get off thinking he can teach us about film?
and where the fucking hell does this guy get off thinking he is funny? i saw his myspace movie, and yes, it was well executed, but so was Lady In The Water. And the latter was funnier too.
Also, something like compressing a college education into 5 minutes should probably be scripted.
I guess this guy is getting the basics down: you need to fail before you can succeed! nice job there brah-heim!
i am not one to tell you he cant teach, his awful teaching and lack of reputable knowledge on the overall subject states this.
and someone being awesome is no reason someone should teach. i mean should the koolaid man be able to teach? or how about the welsh man-beasty? i think not!
Remember the part of my movie when I said to "just delete negative comments"? Okay, I'm keeping this up as an example of the dousche-bag comments you should be deleting as you continue on your wonderful journey through film. SO many people, like this guy, will just try to bring you down because THEY are unhappy with themselves and their career.
hello there, well im writing from Mexico, i reallly really love your vids, my friends and i have a project called "Firstklip" we make short comedy films just to have fun, even though here in Mexico its just really hard to get peoples atention and get them to like it, we've had good response we've been promoted twice in youtube Mexico Front page.
well id really like to get in touch with you sometime, maybe just to talk or you could give us some tips. id apreciate it =D
Good ideas and I see what you're trying to do. But a little vague. Most people don't even know how to correctly export a movie let alone upload it. And those cameras are a little much for the beginning filmmaker. If you do something like this you have to picture yourself in the viewers shoes and talk about the details. Instead of talking about your story. But I mean no offense. Just my comments. Rock on.
this isn't a "how to use an XL-2" video, but all the information on how to use a video camera and export with editing software is available online for everyone to use. anyone can do this if they put their mind to it. end of story.
Totally agreed Dave. But people will look to this video and look up to you to show them some quick and easy tips that might give them a little jump start. The stuff that you picked up along the way. For instance, when I export for YouTube I simply use the Export for iPod setting in FCP. That kind of stuff, ya know? Thats all I was trying to say.
good thoughts dave. For the most part tho, all the $1800+ cameras you recommend probly aren't going to fit into the budget of the people you are focusing this video towards. I'm glad you made it big and aren't going to school, but telling kids to drop their tuition money on cameras and gear if they don't know what to do with them is probably not a good idea...
it IS a good idea, everyone makes it seem so complicated-- it's not. They can figure it out, just like everyone else did, with some hard work and research. All the information is available for free online & people can learn more as they grow.
Dave, your a good man and this was a good thing to make. I'd like to meet you one day and just discuss movies and your point of view on all of it. Good looking out & keep making movies! I'd love to take 40 grand and do what you said but I'd also like to have a film school diploma and all that so thats actually what I'm doing now so wish me luck :)
