All I can think of is Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video. It's riddled with these moves. :P They can't do it like this anymore. It's in a league all of its own.
beyonce has acknowledge that single ladies was influenced by bob fosse choreography so what the problem its not as if shes claining that is was an original idea?
If I were one of these women watching the recent revival, I would be soooo disgusted. These 3 women put it down...I don't know what the hell people are doing these days because the talent and performances just don't live up to this
These women were absolutely FIERCE. I saw this in the movies when it came out. Still give me goosebumps! They can't make musicals anymore because most of these 'singers' have no talent. THIS is talent!
Beyonce "copies" dance moves the same way Led Zeppelin and The Stones "copied" the blues, the way Elvis "copied" R&B and gospel, the way The Beach Boys "copied" Chuck Berry, the way P-Funk "copied" James Brown and Vanilla Fudge... Nothin' is entirely new, but it's all good, and all that is good is nasty, and ain't nothin' good unless you play with it.
Single Ladies was stolen from two Fosse Dances. This one and the second one called Mexican Breakfast which he did for his wife Gwen Verdon for a spot on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Well Inspiration is not be confused with absence of creativity and mediocrity. Call it what you want it's still stolen goods, and anyone with eyes can plainly see it obvious. Parts were stolen verbatim. Watch the them and you will see the repeated movements exactly. Inspiration constitutes similarity. Eg, Bob Fosse was inspired by Jack Cole, Martha Graham, and Vaudeville house he grew up in watch Bill Bow-jangles perform soft shoe. Out of his Inspiration a new way of moving was created.
Beyonce is horrible... it was not inspiration... Beyonce also used the Rich Man's Frug...in her first Fosse "inspired video", but her first video didn't feel inspired, it just felt stolen. Beyonce and her people "copy" KNOWING that her audience will most likely never learn of the connections...
She copies Shakira, she copies Tina Turner, she copies Mariah Carey...she is horrible, but talented...she need to go Indie to discover herself.
@nfahwi "Beyonce and her people "copy" KNOWING that her audience will most likely never learn of the connections..."
Oh? Is that why she said blatantly on the B'Day Anthology that the video was inspired by The Frug? Is that why she went on 106 and Ghetto and SAID that the video was inspired, again, by Fosse?
As for copying Shakira and Tina and MARIAH (who is not unique enough to copy) that's a fucking laugh. Stupidity should be a capital offense and you should be beheaded. :))
As a trained dancer and choreographer, the videos were offensive to me. Being in the industry you know the difference between exalting and gaffing. It was lazy...like rap music is today, given that Hip Hop is only underground now...and if your next step is to school me on Hip Hop - 20 year old boy - then look out for the guillotine cause you will have just broken your own law.
I'm not a Hip Hop fan, I'm a Beyoncé fan - 3, 3, THREE FAILS IN 1.
I'd like to know where the "lazy" is in re-creating that Frug set and managing to adapt classic Broadway choreography to a high-energy HIP-HOP song, and STILL slaying it.
I won't even ask about "Single Ladies" - the 3 straight minutes of dancing and the 12-hour shoot speak for themselves.
The guillotine is too good for you, how about the axe?
We're dancing to this in my dance class. I dont really see the appeal for shirley mcclaine, but I do love Paula Kelly in this. I couldn't keep my eyes off of her.
Oooh, love this. I thought I saw Fosse in Single Ladies! Damned if some of it wasn't directly taken from this! Beautiful stuff though, I love that our generation is adapting it and keeping it alive!
I have always loved Paula Kelly since I was a child. Those long legs and sassy personality. That's my girl...Chita Rivera fabulous dancer even in her 60's. Shirley is a good dancer and actor but her singing has always been lacking.
Yes, Chita is a terrific dancer and has always done well. But for me Shirley MacLaine can really hold her own and as she's aged shes done so many roles I don't think anyone else could have ever been able to pull off the way see can.
I used to be OBSESSED with this scene when I was in high school (it was in the film That's Dancing) and I kept waiting & waiting & waiting for it to show on TV or be released on video...until finally my dream came true. And you know what? I actually can't watch the flick in one sitting. It works better for me in segments...like this!
@and9347 so true. i'm working to be a professional actress..but honestly the films back in the days were simply amazing compared to most films today. Maybe one day I'll change all that.
I think she's chewing it because she was a taxi dancer which back in the day was considered a bit lewd (stereotypically). She and the other girls were supposed to be a little uncultured and ladylike. Also, this musical is based on a Fellini film where the character Charity is based on is actually a prostitute.
Has anyone noticed that in beyonce's once again took dance moves from this musical? First time was "get me bodied" and now it's "single ladies". It just gives me hope that musicals are on the rise again!!!
I would love to know how much input Fosse had on the orchestration of the dance numbers...did you set the length of them or did he fill the music that was given to him?
This piece of film is classic musical-dance at it's best. After all these years it still brings goosebumps. Paula, Chita and Shirley are amazing they way they danced and interacted with each other. This is a JOY to watch...and the movie, directed by Fosse, is pure Pizzazz (capital P). BTW, Paula Kelly performs here in LA several times a year...let's hope 2009 has her doing a show again!
i lvoe that Beyonce used some of this choreagraphy in Single Ladies. Now you young minions can see where it came from. I think she does a great job with this type of dancing. Its funny that it's from the 60's but it looks so new with all the other vids out today. She is truley innovative.
Can you believe this was the first film Fosse directed? They asked him because he had directed the stage show, and then he worked wonders with the film, as well. When I really think about it, Fosse's the obvious choice to direct a movie-musical from a Fellini film.
Love how the number opens with the melody breaking in and out of Chita Rivera's initial declaration. A fabulous, plot-advancing and character-defining musical number- and it *does* pay homage to "West Side Story-" intentionally or otherwise, with its Latin-flavored rooftop dance by three REAL dancers: MacLaine, Kelly, and Rivera!! A defining moment of film direction by the brilliant Bob Fosse.
Fosse was not only an amazing choreographer, the things he did with a camera were amazing. And the only got better in Cabaret, and then in his triumph: the masterpiece that is ALL THAT JAZZ!
the movies werrent just better,,,this is as good as musical theatre gets from the music to rhe talent to the chorography and direction..this is a collaboration of many genuises!
She's my Aunt...thanks, I relay the message. She still performs, if you're ever in Los Angeles, check out the Hollywood Bar and Grill, she does classic Jazz tunes there.
OMG! I am a HUGE Paula Kelly fan!!!! I don't think she ever got the publicity and fame she deserves! She is so talented and puts these so called entertainers today to shame--she is the total package! She can dance, sing and act--these broads today are just pretenders! Give her my regards let her know she still has fans out here!!!!
This is one of my favorite of all-time movie musicals. Cy Coleman is a brilliant composer, who never received his just due. The film was not a success, because musicals were "dying." I actually identified with "Charity Hope Valentine" - and I even live in her neighborhood. I'm not a "taxi-dancer," but I did get a shout for doing "Big Spender" with my DVD player in my apt. These three ladies are the Real McCoy. Look at them dance, and count the rhythm (it's complex).
Cy Coleman paid his respects to Bernstein, but this show is his. His burlesque is really fine. After this number, Shirley goes to the employent agency, and the orchestra music dwindles to one instrument: a typewriter in rhythmn. Listen for that. Shirley always chose interesting movies...
I think they meant in the direction, not in the music. I assume they mean the rooftop parts, where the scenery looks similar to the "America" scene in West Side Story.
I know MacLaine is the star here but Kelly kicks her ass. :)
