@nmaloney01 This song is about his car accident, so that line is just a reference to how he looked when he was found... "And everybody say 'is he alright'? And everybody say 'what's he like?' And everybody say 'he sure looks funny. That's Montgomery Clift, honey'"...
My prayer for Clift is that he repented of his homosexuality and got right with God. An adulterer needs to repent as well. God only deals with mankind on the basis of mercy. Because of the cross, God can forgive anyone no matter what they;ve done. I sent recordings of the gospel to Monty's niece. I hope she shared them with him. Jesus says, Come close to me. I won.t slap you down. My hands are nailed to a cross.
Great song, great band. Ya gotta rent an old Monty Clift flick that has him running in it. Freaky, creepy, other-worldy...like a 1950's housewife on anti-depressants.
He did have some relationships with women, but his friends believed this was because he found it hard to live as a closeted homosexual and therefore forced himself to have sex with women too.
Hi! That is completely false thinking. Nobody is angry or hates himself for being homosexual. It´s like saying that you hate yourself because you LOVE.
Yes, they do. People that are caught up in this sin do hate themselves., for the most part. Anyone that turns away from God's commandments is miserable. Thats why poor Clift turned to alcohol and drugs. I hope you will reconsider the claims of Jesus. We're all springloaded to have dark thoughts of God, but thats the devil's lie. Nobody is as loving, kind, and merciful as God. Jesus died for selfish, uncomprehending, ungrateful people who don't have a clue why they're here.
Yes, and people think that he rejected Liz Taylor only because he was gay. I do not think so, I think Clift did not want to go out with Liz Taylor because he did not feel interested in it, that's all.
Back then, people had sex with everyone and that Clift was bisexual would not refuse to have sex with Liz Taylor. no, no , no...
@gauchatche Back then people had sex with everyone? In the 50´s ? are you serious? He was NOT angry at his homo side. I think he was gay, or at least a bisexual who is more attracted to men than to women. And I also think that some woman cannot accept the fact that he just wasn´t into women, or at least not so much as he was into men. Because he was a beautiful man and woman were/are in love with him and like to daydream about him... But facts tell us that he was gay
@001Broadway Certainly, the sexual liberation in the 50, 60 and 70 was equal to or worse than today. And among artists (actors and actresses), they had sex with everyone and it was normal.
And bisexuality seemed to be fashionable at the time, because the actors were involved with men and then they married women (Marlon Brando, Rock Hudson, Anthony Perkins and ...)
@gauchatche Yes, I agree about that-in showbusiness everyone did have sex with everyone. But 50´s in general were almost the most conservative era of all time. And bisexuality became fashion when David Bowie and glam-rock became popular in the first half of the 70´s. Their moto was: we are all bisexual! But the actors you mentioned before( Marlon, Rock, Anthony, Jimmy ...) were so called rebels and people like them were more exeption than rule. They were amazing and didn´t follow the leader...
@gauchatche But I can understand what are you trying to say. Sexual revolution actually started boiling in the 50´s , but among artists first in this decade and didn´t yet reached society. But if you look at it from this point of view: artists were always very liberal and they always did things their way, right?
Absolutely. And among artists such behavior was not indecent.
The actresses Liz Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Fonda who openly said they wanted sex and that was normal (I think it was for this reason that many actors were bisexual hehehehe).
We can not say that in the 50s, 60s and 70s sex litigation procedure not liberal, liberal sex was very common.
@gauchatche sexual liberation under the puritanical curtain of america you mean>? I know you can find anything u are looking for in porn land lol .i know this. IM also sure among people with money sex is easy to come by..but generally speaking, ive not encountered this day and age to be sexually free and open..at least not compared to what i hear of the 60s...am i wrong? Maybe im just a loser who cant get any or speak the right language lol. in my exp sex z hard to come by...no pun intended..lol
@gauchatche And don´t get angry, that is just my opinion. But I am so tired of hearing this all the time: he was angry at his homosexual side. Please!!! People blame his homosexuality for all his problems. That is beyond stupid! The fucking fact is that he had more male lovers than female! AMEN
Hi! Monty clift was gay. His relationships with women were just fun experiments. He used women for his public image of heterosxual. His girlfriends knew he was gay, some of them were very hurt because they were deeply in love with him, including Liz Taylor-at the beginning of their friendship. Actually they were more like friends.
@CosmoHunter24 They all were Brando, Newman, Dean. I know Brando and Newman were from Brando's autobiography, and Dean one of his friends confessed to having a sexual relationship with him.
@CosmoHunter24 Honey ,Monty was gay. Liz and him always have been friends. She saved his life in the 50's or early 60's when he had a horrific accident and nearly choked on his tongue. Liz was first on the scene and had to plunge her finger down his throat to save his life. This is the days when everyone drank and drove. Monty never fully recovered his good loooks from this accident, and did eventually spiral downhill from there.
(scream!) One of my most favorite fella AND one of my most favorite bands! Good googly moogly! So cool to see someone has taste! Great video and thank you for doing this. It says a lot and means a lot. Very personal to me......sounds cheesy but its true. xx
Actually, just a minor point but it was Mick Jones of the Clash who was a huge and knowledgeable movie fan. Jones wrote the lyrics. Believe me when I say that punk fans who were also movie buffs were delighted by this tune when it appeared back in the late 70s.
@ClueSign From what I heard, Guy Stevens (who produced the album "London Calling") was a big Monty Clift fan and gave Joe Strummer a book about Clift, which Joe really enjoyed, especially since he saw a lot of resemblance between Stevens' and Clift's personalities, so this song is a tribute to both Clift and Stevens. Joe Strummer is in fact the writer of this song.
Montgomery Clift was a gorgeous, *gorgeous* man... It's amazing. Even after that wreck he was in, he STILL manages to be hotter than everyone else. They just don't make actors like him anymore...
i like how the start has all the clips of the films the Clash mentions. how would this video look like if it was done in a timeline way charting Monty Cliffs career from fame, looks, and popularity to accident and utter deterioration? I aint saying this to bad the guy its just that he has a million faces especially near the end with the beard, reminded me too much of Tom Cruise character in Vanilla Sky. And to do it that way with this song could speak to people of beauty on multiple levels
i first thought this song was mocking Monty, but after seeing these pics and witnessing 'the truth' i now think clashes song did him a great tribute. i think this sounds like ragtime music, quite sad in this case.
so uh....how are they coming along on that time machine?

Ele era homosessual. Ele rejeitou Elizabeth Taylor. Ficaram como amigos.
tpvds 1 year ago
