Been looking everywhere just to hear this again. What a fantastic song, better than I remember! Lost my cassette version of the album years ago and haven't been able to replace it at all. In the meantime, THANKS for posting a true Indie classic! My search for a copy goes on....
One of those songs, once heard never forgotten. Love the dirty guitar lick. Is it just me or has anybody else noticed the dancer in white isn't wearing any knickers?
THIS IS THE GREATEST VIDEO OF ALL TIME - that potent mix of contemporary dancing with a great indie song! i can certainly dance like that to this song!
I had this on a compilation tape back then, such a fantastic song, and best of all the ending - Britpop's answer to "A Day In The Life". I wonder where Salad are now?
God dammmit this is ace! My sister had it on tape YEARS ago and OH! I stole it. Gonna look up Mall Monarchy by..... Uhhhhh.... Can't remember their name now..... Ooee I'm not gonna get to sleep for a while...
miss the old days already. britpop was once (mid90s-2000) attracting lots of fan here in Thailand. thumb up, especially for the sound composer of this song.
I listened to Salad all the time when i was 15 and i still love it after 14 years. One of my favorite bands back then together with pavement, sonic youth, the pixies....
Salad's singer is called Marijne Van Der Vlugt. She was also a VJ on MTV Europe at the time. They had 2 official albums, "Drink Me" (which includes this track) and "Ice Cream". Their first LP, "Singles Bar" was actually their first 3 singles combined. I'd suggest starting with "Drink Me", a personal favorite.
A great song! I used to play on the radio where I worked in the 90s... Unfortunately they don't exist anymore. As far as I know they recorded only one LP. Very very GOOD!
THIS WAS THE FIRST SALARD SONG I HEARD- I WAS AT SCHOOL THEN BACK IN THE EARLY 90s ...SWEET...ANY ONE KNOW WHAT HAPPEND TO THE BAND?? ANSWERS ON A POSTCARD PLEASE-HA-HA..
The wife found my old salad album (on tape!!) yesterday when we were moving house, totally forgot how fantastic they were, i even had a t shirt of them(skinny fit, dont think id fit into it now mind!!too many pies and pints!!They really were totally underated, i just need to find a tape player now!!!Top clip ta for the memories..
I was a big fan of Salad, though the ballroom dancing in this video doesn't really work, should've had footage of the band playing intercut with the café scenes. I do hope they reform someday, they were really something special. I remember this song being used on Match of the Day and really it was a perfect marriage of tune and image :)
Salad had the requisite edginess to separate themselves from their Britpop contemporaries, however when it came to a lead-off single for their album they seemed slightly tentative... In "Drink the Elixir" they had a good album track that never quite produced the chorus you were expecting.... But for a band that would go on to produce the likes of "Granite Statue" and "Motorbike to Heaven" you can forgive/forget... SUMMARY = Not a single, but a great band.
Sorry cant really agree with you, i love the bass, rythm and lyrics a great Salad song.A definate single. You could easily fall in love with that voice in the chorus....no?
thank you so much for posting this! i championed salad as my favourite band for many many a year.... not many jumped on the band wagon with me.... i'm hoping to find some footage of the cover of raindrops keep falling on my head that they did with terry hall on here.... that would make my day :) x x

Think it was Louise from Sleeper who said Britpop ended the second Southgate missed the penalty to put England out of Euro 96
