  • Been looking everywhere just to hear this again. What a fantastic song, better than I remember! Lost my cassette version of the album years ago and haven't been able to replace it at all. In the meantime, THANKS for posting a true Indie classic! My search for a copy goes on....

  • MARIJNE! LEKKER!!!

  • @Sonicyouthism Marijne van der Vlugt has always been such a good looking woman. And a real rock-chick to boot!

  • One of those songs, once heard never forgotten. Love the dirty guitar lick. Is it just me or has anybody else noticed the dancer in white isn't wearing any knickers?

  • this does bring back some memories....love this song!

  • This song is amazing. Salad were a great little band but for some reason they missed the bus. A terrible shame really.

Fantastic guitar sound though, not to mention guitarist

  • OUi

  • THIS IS THE GREATEST VIDEO OF ALL TIME - that potent mix of contemporary dancing with a great indie song! i can certainly dance like that to this song!

  • I HATE THIS VIDEO-BUT LOVE THIS SONG-Got some Salad stuff on my channel-On The Beat..!

  • I am.. its called rum.. love this song.

  • Utter brilliant band

  • Fantastic...from the time when Indie music was a lot better.....!

  • one of the best songs ever

  • Simply amazing song !

  • Marijne proving that everything they ever said about "double denim" was wrong.

  • Drink the elixir.

  • I had this on a compilation tape back then, such a fantastic song, and best of all the ending - Britpop's answer to "A Day In The Life". I wonder where Salad are now?

  • God dammmit this is ace! My sister had it on tape YEARS ago and OH! I stole it. Gonna look up Mall Monarchy by..... Uhhhhh.... Can't remember their name now..... Ooee I'm not gonna get to sleep for a while...

  • Come on iTunes! I want to buy this instead of stealing it!

  • Where can I get this on mp3? iTunes doesn't have it.

  • @easychord1 limewire *cough*

  • Love it !!!!

  • Great song. I still find myself singing this to myself all these years later.

  • Brought it on 12 inch single.

  • drink the elixir

  • miss the old days already. britpop was once (mid90s-2000) attracting lots of fan here in Thailand. thumb up, especially for the sound composer of this song.

  • Oh my god !!!! l thought these guy's where dead!!! Where are threy now?.

  • @papipeposchwartz They all died, it was very sad.

  • Love this song...real quirky guitar sound.....

  • I listened to Salad all the time when i was 15 and i still love it after 14 years. One of my favorite bands back then together with pavement, sonic youth, the pixies....

  • hahahaha i got it!!! here in Australia!!

  • Great song, great album. Now whoever's got my CD give it back!

  • I bought this when it came out. Incredible song :P

  • I heard this song on Match of the Day once to a goal scoring compendium and I was so PROUD for them! That's about as mainstream as you can get!

  • what happened to indie music in england , why did it get soooooooo shit now?

  • is there still indie music in england it died in the 90s as everyone knows.

  • @MegaRapture It didn't really. You just got older. So did I. There's always good music being made.

  • @barryshostakovitch such as?

  • @MegaRapture oooh, off the top my head, 'Wreckin' Bar' by The Vaccines.

  • @barryshostakovitch never heard of em, but maybe thats cause all the gigging places are closing down here.

  • @MegaRapture Try The Duke Spirit's 'Neptune' and The Horrors' latest album, 'Primary Colours'.

  • Absolutely first class. Like the lyrics a lot.

  • Salad's singer is called Marijne Van Der Vlugt. She was also a VJ on MTV Europe at the time. They had 2 official albums, "Drink Me" (which includes this track) and "Ice Cream". Their first LP, "Singles Bar" was actually their first 3 singles combined. I'd suggest starting with "Drink Me", a personal favorite.

  • A great song! I used to play on the radio where I worked in the 90s... Unfortunately they don't exist anymore. As far as I know they recorded only one LP. Very very GOOD!

  • I think they had other albums called Ice cream and Singles Bar.

  • Well.. good to know. Sorry for my ignorance ;-)

  • cool, i wish i herd them on the radio

  • alive...again........thx

  • I love this one!!!

  • i've been looking for this song for ages!!! thanks you!!!!! :)

  • el elixir es un placer muy dulce

  • Marijne van der Vlugt. She use to be an MTV VJ back in the day too.

  • sweet 90s rock

  • So glad I found this, when I was a kid I used to stay up late listening to Mark Radcliffe in the hope that he played this track. Love it.

  • argh!!! me tooo!!!!!!! ive been looking for this for ages!!! xx

  • THIS WAS THE FIRST SALARD SONG I HEARD- I WAS AT SCHOOL THEN BACK IN THE EARLY 90s ...SWEET...ANY ONE KNOW WHAT HAPPEND TO THE BAND?? ANSWERS ON A POSTCARD PLEASE-HA-HA..

  • i love this song

    <3

  • Once of the dancers reminds me of Anton du Beke off Strictly Come Dancing. *LOL* Wonder if it is him...be the right age.

  • The wife found my old salad album (on tape!!) yesterday when we were moving house, totally forgot how fantastic they were, i even had a t shirt of them(skinny fit, dont think id fit into it now mind!!too many pies and pints!!They really were totally underated, i just need to find a tape player now!!!Top clip ta for the memories..

  • Think it was Louise from Sleeper who said Britpop ended the second Southgate missed the penalty to put England out of Euro 96

  • I was a big fan of Salad, though the ballroom dancing in this video doesn't really work, should've had footage of the band playing intercut with the café scenes. I do hope they reform someday, they were really something special. I remember this song being used on Match of the Day and really it was a perfect marriage of tune and image :)

  • This I like! Lovely Marijne and band...

  • Salad had the requisite edginess to separate themselves from their Britpop contemporaries, however when it came to a lead-off single for their album they seemed slightly tentative... In "Drink the Elixir" they had a good album track that never quite produced the chorus you were expecting.... But for a band that would go on to produce the likes of "Granite Statue" and "Motorbike to Heaven" you can forgive/forget... SUMMARY = Not a single, but a great band.

  • Sorry cant really agree with you, i love the bass, rythm and lyrics a great Salad song.A definate single. You could easily fall in love with that voice in the chorus....no?

  • Yeah, their best tune! Mark Radcliffe said he never bored of it.

  • amazing band,amazing album

  • Goed zo! Marijne van der Vlugt + Band! Neerlands hoop in bange dagen...

  • Thnx for posting....

  • O my god! THANKYOU!!! Loved them, and loved this video

  • aaahhh yes! thats the one! thank you for posting this anyway! x x

  • thank you so much for posting this! i championed salad as my favourite band for many many a year.... not many jumped on the band wagon with me.... i'm hoping to find some footage of the cover of raindrops keep falling on my head that they did with terry hall on here.... that would make my day :) x x

  • De rien.

Yes,they did a cover with Terry Hall of Dream a Little Dream and not Raindrops keep falling on my head.
