Yes, it does. The first half of the series (26-27 episodes in) is just a monster-of-the-week cycle with tiny little bits of plot being revealed. Frankly you'd probably be fine skipping straight to the half-way point and not miss much of the story but I HIGHly recommend against that because part of the joy of the show is seeing the extreme evolution of GGG and Mamoru. The end fights are IMMENSELY climactic after all that. STICK WITH IT MAN. You'll be glad.
It doesn't matter whether Gurren Lagann or Gaogaigar is better. Just remember that SOMEDAY Banpresto is gonna put TTGL and GGG in the same Super Robot Wars, and then you can have Gai wear Kamina's shades and Simon use the G-Stone. And then Shin Getter Robo will be there too and the whole game will detonate in a shower of green energy.
Hopefully said game will include G Gundam and some kind of Shin Mazinkaiser. Maybe even Gunbuster and Diebuster for estrogen-powered valor. Why not throw in Megas XLR? Kotetsushin Jeeg isn't too far off, and apparently that's obligated to be in the same game as Godannar.

@Truehero1057 The first half suffers from having to follow the villian-of-the-week formula, but if you can sit through that, it makes the second half SOOOOO much better due to the amount of build up the writers alotted.

@Syiden Oh no, I think it's WAY too hard for me to even IMAGINE understanding it! And not all anime/Japanese movies revolve around giant fighting robots. There's anime about cute/badass creatues like Pokémon and Digimon (even though Digimon has characters like Machinedramon who is a giant robot) and then you have series like Death Note, Soul Eater, or Haruhi, which have no giant robots in them at all IIRC.

Probably the only one I watched more than twice in my life xD.Most people in Argentina who have ever heard of mecha,only rely this: Evangelion because it's "insane''. I just think the message of GaoGaiGar is far more inspiring and true to what this world full of evil actually needs. These characters don't fight to prove some belief born out their selfish minds: they fight because THAT'S WHAT'S MUST BE DONE.
GGG is pretty much as super as a super robot anime can get. Evangelion is more or less the opposite. What gets to me about Evangelion is the ridiculous fandom and the number of remakes. Those who want a more militaristic feel when it comes to super robots should check out the 1985 Dancougar.
Am I the only person on the goddamn internet that likes GGG, Gurren Lagann, and Evangelion? Diebuster will remain my favorite mecha series, possibly forever, but there's nothing wrong with having widespread taste in mecha. 08th MS Team is my second favorite, even though it's on opposite ends of the realism spectrum. And enough of this "x wouldn't exist with x!" bullshit; that's like saying Squirtgun wouldn't exist without the Sex Pistols... it doesn't mean they aren't better.

I'll always lean toward Super Robots in general, but there's nothing wrong with the Gundam series, as a whole, or any other real-type series. Mecha's nice in that it's not too hard to make it as realistic or absurd as you want.

@cruelbat The point is, Shinji is a fool. It was incredibly hard to like him and his woe as me attitude. I understood it, without needing to analyze it in-depth. The series as a whole was a let down for me. There were some really good parts, but they were not enough for me.

I love both Getter and Mazinger. Although not a super robot, Devil Man was great as well.

True I didn't watch past where they only copied the exact format of previous episodes but I didn't feel like the show was worth any more watches. It failed on its first impression with me. Personally I would rather watch G Gundam or even TTGL because that seemed executed well. GaoGaiGar seemed too shallow for me to care for.

On the TTGL fans vs. GGG fans I said the majority of fans and its true because many of gurren laganns fans normally only watch mainstream moe and slice of life type anime and have only picked it up due to animondays, dannychoo or similar sources
As for the intros bit I'm a fan of Masaaki Endoh and JAM Project and I honestly love the GaoGaiGar intro
@EpsilonKnight2 and I will admit the first few episodes of gaogaigar are boring but it does get better later on. The early episodes are homages to earlier super robot shows and tokusatsu series and if you have the patience to watch through them they WILL grow on you and I say this because when I first started watching gaogaigar it bored me it really only started to catch me at ep 5

@EpsilonKnight2 Truth be told the first 5 eps of gaogaigar are boring until you finish the series and go back when choryujin first pops up it starts getting progressively more epic but the saturday morning kids show wash rinse repeat episode formula doesn't stop until you get to episode 20 and if you have the patience to watch to that point you'll probably have had become a fan of the show anyway
Truth be told I almost gave up on GaoGaiGar but it's now one of my favorite anime series in general

Diebuster will remain my favorite mecha series, possibly forever, but there's nothing wrong with having widespread taste in mecha. 08th MS Team is my second favorite, even though it's on opposite ends of the realism spectrum. And enough of this "x wouldn't exist with x!" bullshit; that's like saying Squirtgun wouldn't exist without the Sex Pistols... it doesn't mean they aren't better.

@guitarxeater I agree. There's nothing wrong with an incredibly varied taste in mecha. I'll always lean toward Super Robots in general, but there's nothing wrong with the Gundam series, as a whole, or any other real-type series. Mecha's nice in that it's not too hard to make it as realistic or absurd as you want.

My (rhetorical) question was to whether I'm the only person on the "goddamn internet" that enjoys all three of those shows. I see a lot of fighting and arguing between mecha fans and it seems really stupid after six or seven seconds of thought. We're like art enthusiasts arguing over whether Van Gogh or Monet painted prettier pictures. It's very silly and we should stop.

@cruelbat The point is, Shinji is a fool. It was incredibly hard to like him and his woe as me attitude. I understood it, without needing to analyze it in-depth. The series as a whole was a let down for me. There were some really good parts, but they were not enough for me.

@valhala89 In the us, Mazinger Z was rehashed and released as Tranzer Z in the 80s. Nothing like the original. Its actually hard to get his stuff here as well. Ive been watching robot anime for years and only found out about him 2 years ago. If you look you can find it, if not you wont know its there. Thats what happens over here. I love both Getter and Mazinger. Although not a super robot, Devil Man was great as well.

@Rodimus1138 Dude wtf? You don't have to take this so seriously. I love the older super robots and some of the more recent ones but honestly I couldn't stand GaoGaiGar. True I didn't watch past where they only copied the exact format of previous episodes but I didn't feel like the show was worth any more watches. It failed on its first impression with me. Personally I would rather watch G Gundam or even TTGL because that seemed executed well. GaoGaiGar seemed too shallow for me to care for.

On the TTGL fans vs. GGG fans I said the majority of fans and its true because many of gurren laganns fans normally only watch mainstream moe and slice of life type anime and have only picked it up due to animondays, dannychoo or similar sources
As for the intros bit I'm a fan of Masaaki Endoh and JAM Project and I honestly love the GaoGaiGar intro
As for useless characters its true sorry.

@EpsilonKnight2 and I will admit the first few episodes of gaogaigar are boring but it does get better later on. The early episodes are homages to earlier super robot shows and tokusatsu series and if you have the patience to watch through them they WILL grow on you and I say this because when I first started watching gaogaigar it bored me it really only started to catch me at ep 5

@EpsilonKnight2 Truth be told the first 5 eps of gaogaigar are boring until you finish the series and go back when choryujin first pops up it starts getting progressively more epic but the saturday morning kids show wash rinse repeat episode formula doesn't stop until you get to episode 20 and if you have the patience to watch to that point you'll probably have had become a fan of the show anyway
Truth be told I almost gave up on GaoGaiGar but it's now one of my favorite anime series in general
