I'm currently in college and I can't help but wonder why these girls would read the entire book and memorized it prior to the class...do they not have lives?
Could somebody tell me what “flicka” means in that particular scene? I’ve read definitions over the internet and I’m not sure what she meant when she called Betty “Flicka”. English is not my primary language and sometimes I don’t get these “jokes”.. Thanks in advance..
being a mom is the most serious and important career for a woman, a mother, a wife doesn't have to be an ignorant boring mediocre woman, she went to college, she is the best teacher her kids will have, her husband doesn't get bored with her conversation about cooking and babies, because she is intelligent and educated, she loves her family and they are her happiness :)
Really, I think that Education in this country is excellent. This country is wonderful. It is the best country in the world. If Russia is so wonderful, why are so many Russians or others coming over here for their education to return to their countries. GO LEARN SOMETHING
Somehow, despite the great cast that is in this movie, the only actress that really draws my attention is Marcia Gay Harden....I am actually quite surprised at myself.
Nice to put that feminst know-it-all in her place. These girls showed her that they were smarter than she realized or thought about them and frankly it's kind of satisfying. She came there ready to educate what she thought were a bunch of ornamental idiots, but in fact they showed her that they did indeed have brains.
@TheNuharoo Well ... That's Not even a little bit right. How did you get to that conclusion?
Have you even seen the movie? Or have you just read the plot on wikipedia and simply decided that the whole movie is really about how the "girls show their new teacher how smart they are."
I think it's really about how a forward-thinking teacher during the 50's trying to teach her female students to see beyond the societal roles and prioritiz their own interests instead of their husbands.
@TheNuharoo yes, good observation. ultimately in the movie she has good intentions, as she believes women deserve more than what's expected of them and how underestimated they are by society, yet she too underestimates them greatly. she ends up learning as much from her students as they do from her, if not more. it's refreshing to see a movie where the female characters actually LIKE eachother and even learn from each other, as most female characters in movies don't even speak to each other.

Education in the US is a joke. One of my good friends grew up in Russia and they were learning how to factor in the 3rd grade. We really need to improve public education in the United States :/
@rayraybbydoll wouldn't exactly say it's a joke, but there's always room for improvement. I think part of the problem stems from differences in cultural values. In America, you are praised for your success whether it comes from an exemplary education, or if you're the next reality TV star. We are the land of opportunity and as long as that's the case, there will always be those that view education as a waste of time. Of course, I'm leaving out urban culture as well.
@rayraybbydoll cont'd..In some inner city areas, students are actually harassed for putting effort into their schooling. During Grad school, I worked at a few urban high schools and had the opportunity to work with a lot of the students. Amongst black students especially, they are considered an 'Uncle Tom' or a sellout if they choose to show the least bit of dedication. Not to mention the lack of emphasis their parents put on it. That's just an example, but it relates to all colors and creeds.
@rayraybbydoll Exactly, this is why they have geniuses at 10 in the USA, they are good students in my country of origin.....education in the usa is about curriculum=passing the hurdles of bureocracy, not habout handling a subject
@rayraybbydoll: It depends on where you go to school. I went to an average-performing school and learned fractions, division and multiplication in first grade and second grade. I also learned factoring in 3rd grade.
@rayraybbydoll it's not onmy the USA, but all the occidental countries unfortunately. I was lucky to be schooled with a semi-soviet system. And it helped a lot
Honestly, I've done worse to professor's before. It's their job to have more to say than the students. If they're just teaching straight out of the text, then what's the point?
@iamemplangyoja she did an amazing job... such talent! I love her she is my favorite actress! It is true though... us women are much more than wives and mothers. The beauty of it is that we still manage to take on those roles and then some! <3
wth is wrong with that class? First off, I don't know ANYone who manages to read the entire textbook of a course before the first class. Talk about over-achieving. It's meant to be a learning experience, not a teach yourself bs.
My teachers would never stand for such pompous behavior. -_-
@sherulzz You have to remember that as a woman, learning was more of a privilege (a new one) for women. To go to college, was a very special privilege and learning was to be taken SERIOUSLY. Meaning you read the textbook and took the most out of that education cause your grandparents probably weren't given that opportunity.
@sherulzz Yeah, I just graduated from Wellesley and we definitely don't pull that act anymore, lol. It's more likely that the reading was done after the fact...
I have absolutely **** NO****** wish to go back to the olden days when women had so little power. But at the same time I wish all current college students could take a course on life skills like basic housekeeping and formal dining etiquette.

@orlandobabe It's a traditional ceremony to ask to be allowed to enter the Door to experience the World Of Knowledge. Also, keep in mind that in those Days, women only went to College to find the right Man, Get Married, Have Kids and live happily ever after, yet in the real world it never happened. Oh, if you can Read Class Reunion by Rona Jaffe, you'll see how life was for women in the 1950's.
@xoxohelloxoxo It is in many ways a Fire Hazard. I saw this on A Different World where Jada Pinkett's Character Lina made Chili, a spark went off and a fire took place and when the Dean played by the late Roxie Roker came in she started screaming at Whitley about how dare she turn the Dorm into a Disco Inferno.

Baahhhh, no pets??? Off campus apartment for me.... never understood why colleges won't allow dogs in the dorms. My lab went with me to many lectures, the library, etc.... yeah this is a random complaint - but seriously! Life's happier w/ dogs around, I did a semester long research paper on it for a class.
@Fantageous People snuck in dogs and cats at my college for the years I was there. Unfortunately they weren't responsible about them. They would leave them there with just a big container of food during the holiday breaks. As resident assistants you would find the strangest things in the girls rooms. Don't forget that some people are allergic. Why should they suffer for someone to have their pet?
@MyUsername30001 It's not about Race. I loved this movie especially the character of Connie. I saw alot of myself in her, and my Cousin was alot like Giselle a real Beyotch who liked to put everyone down because deep down she didn't feel good about herself. Also, I felt this movie was Spot On in casting "Extras" there was an African American and an Asian.

You know what would be great, if they did a Movie about Spellman, the only African American Women's College in America.

@laminage seriously, stop making everything about race.
MyUsername30001 1 year ago
@MyUsername30001 It's not about Race. I loved this movie especially the character of Connie. I saw alot of myself in her, and my Cousin was alot like Giselle a real Beyotch who liked to put everyone down because deep down she didn't feel good about herself. Also, I felt this movie was Spot On in casting "Extras" there was an African American and an Asian.

@laminage
Jada Pinkett could have a starring role. Or Regina King!

@laminage That's a great idea, but don't forget Bennett College in Greensboro, NC.
