when you're smoking the hookah you're se posted to get big clouds of smoke, and not sucking it for like 2 secs but for 5 or more, and it doesn't gives you that big of a hit like a bong, it's just some smoke nothing to compare with weed or something.

this is the same thing that happened when i first tried hookah. the smoke was not as thick as that of my companions who have been doing it for years. i got made fun of and have never tried it again.

first you put the pipe on the floor. second you dont smoke it like it was weed, you smoke it like it was a cigar. puff it and savor the flavor but dont inhale too hard if at all. the smoke will not get you high or buzzed. it is more like a sailor mans tobacco pipe that you puff on for taste. this is coming from an american living in egypt who knows his stuff.
