But its funny to listen to silly explanations for that. A few weeks ago a Chinese girl told me the Chinese Army only lost against the Vietnamese Army because they used Vietnamese Civilians as living shields, and the Chinese Soldiers refused to shoot at them.

Then the Chinese Army would have done the same. Seriously, the North Vietnamese lost a lot of soldiers when fighting American troops (not against South Vietnamese Troops though), but manpower and determination where all the got, if they had have the same technology and firepower the US Army had, it would have looked a lot different. And again, they didn't fight primarily for communism, but for the independence from foreign powers.

About the US Army winning the Major battles, I wonder how that would have turned out without air superiority, artillery, napalm etc.

And yes, politically it was a grab in the toilet to support a regime so unpopular, corrupt and incompetent. In the end America would have been forced to kill almost all Vietnamese to "save" them from "evil" communism.

The South Vietnamese government was corrupt and weak and our government made blunders plus US public perception was against our involvement in Vietnam. Those were contributers in defeat, but like I said we won the overall picture, the Cold war which Vietnam was apart of.

We won every major battle in Vietnam, it was a terrible defeat strategically and politically. We won the overall aspect because Vietnam was part of the Cold war and we outlasted the Soviets in the Cold War. the Russian supplied the NVA like we supplied the mujhadeens in the Soviet- Afghan War. Vietnam was a proxy war of the Cold War. We got our asses kicked strategically, but not tactically. We beat the hell out of the NVA in the TET offensive and wiped out the Vietcong.
