This is the song that got Jean Luc Godard to call this - the first American socialist musical. "Maybe start a pajama factory of my own..." Not that I agree!
I can't believe that the Ruling Elite has left this on the Internet. It is such pure fascist propaganda. Rome was diligent in brainwashing the American People into not perceiving that they were bricklayers and slaves to Rome.
THIS IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THE PROPAGANDA FED TO AMERICANS TO COVER UP THE FACT THAT THEY ARE MERELY SLAVES AND BRICKLAYERS WITH THE IRS AS THEIR TASKMASTERS.
Pure corn by today's standards, but I remember how powerful the play was in the 1950's. John Raitt was a lion of the theater, as was Doris Day as a big band singer and later, an actress. It's a great period piece, similar to "How to Succeed in Business (without really trying)". Should be a Masters thesis in both these themes and the theater.
Thank you so much for putting this up. Our school is currently in rehearsal for this show and we needed to look at this scene for picket sign ideas! Thank you so much :)!
@evanthomas07 its because back then everything cost much less then they do today. a small raise like that would have really helped out. its like us getting a one or two dollar raise at out jobs today. at one time a gallon of gas cost only a quarter. so that would have really helped raise their standard of living at that time.
I luv this song -33

If they had to change the line "Doesn't buy an awful lot" would have been a better fit.

I stage managed this play about a year and a half ago. It's such a fun musical for the classic fan.
