i used to work for an insurance company. Couldn't last more than a year, it's fucking sick what they do there. Deciding on people's lives if it hurt the "bottom line".
I hope that if there is a hell...that the people that are against universal healtcare for everone, regardless of if your healthy & wealthy, should burn in the hottest corner of hell. Money and greed is allowing children to die so that CEO's can get another Ferrari. WAKE UP AMERICA... 18,000 PEOPLE a year die in this country from a lack of health insurance. That's 6 9/11's a year that our government allows to happen for you war mongering right wing idiots. You won the slave staes in 2008.Congrats
This country's greedy health insurance industry is a sign of a sickness and self-centered, Free market, survival of the fitest mentality that is at the heart of much of America's failure to take care of the needs of it's people.
fucking cunts... unbelievable. It really is a disgrace that something like this is allowed to happen in a country as rich as the US. really fucking sad.
To all americans, I think it's time for a revoltion. Everyone is bending over and taking it up the ass. Your Government has lied to you for many year and still you people do nothing. The Governemnt, pharmaceutical and insurance companies will continue to make billions off of people's health. Why? Because they can. Polticians are too corrupt to place hope in that one day it'll change. People need to speak up. Only Moore is doing this and I hope people appreciate his efforts ...
yes it is, but the fact is all the people in your country is worth paying extra taxes right? Same with education. You want a healthy educated population right?
F*ckin' Demons. "Greatest Nation In The World" my ASS. If I could convince my friends and family, I would denounce my citizenship and leave this sh*t hole of a country in a Second. Is this why I've been paying 60% TAX for the past 15 years? F*ckin 17 Year Old KID!!! F*ckin DISGUSTING! Anyone who disagree with me, JUST GO F*CKYOUSELVES.
I've been living in Japan for the past 6 years. I can't afford insulin in my own country. Sometimes I get to go home to visit for a couple of weeks...
The healthcare industry,Cigna included, is part of the war on the middle class, Cigna's CEO's, Board of Directors and the employees who denied the claims should be tried and executed as war criminals. As should the CEOs, board of directors and doctors who refused to proceed with the girls treatment, especially if the hospital is a 'faith based' institution because they receive 'faith based' welfare from the government.
For many years advocates of government-run health care pointed to Europe as an ideal, noting that America was the "only industrialized country without a national health care system." Now, however, the European welfare states are slashing benefits in the face of rising health care costs.
Personally, socialized medicine would be a great benefit for me. I have paid for my own health insurance for over 30 years. It would save me nearly $600.00 a month today in premiums. The problem with it is long term. Without the profit motive, all that is left is the altruistic motive, and government bureaucracy. Doctors will not settle for less money. They will work in private clinics for the very rich. Drug companies will not risk billions on research and development.
cigna didnt save any money. They were operating as an administrator owner and they didnt make the decisions on whether she should get a transplant or not. despite it not being their responsibility, they offered to pay for the transplant.
Since when has a transplant been experimental? They've been done for years now and with great success. This story is just sick and sad. If I were in this young girl's family i'd be so angry!
Talk to the Federal government. Medicare only pays for three years of ant--rejection drugs after a transplant. These are drugs that the person must take for the rest of their life.
If current shareholders in the health care insurers went to their brokers and cleared their portfolios of such stock and insisted on ethical investing, this would help. Cigna will lose a lot of money, prestige, and perhaps face criminal charges. The candidates will have to address the issue or be perceived as out of touch.
I read a lot of arguments about shareholders in the insurance companies. The real concern should be about stakeholders in health care. Don't worry about shareholders: they'll move on when there is no longer anything to be gained by picking over carcasses.
Shareholders in health insurance companies do not provide any of those things. There are plenty of other companies to invest in. Your argument is absurd. The "company" in this case is criminal in thier actions.
Whether they are shareholder in an insurance company or not, ALL companies need investors. To single out a health insurance company's shareholders is wrong and "absurd".
Watch SICKO!!! Its a must see movie! Find out for your selves.. If its your life depending on it 4951WEDDEL what do you think would you prefer? same situation here and france or italy brit or canada for example people tend to have better chance of survival. what so bad about that?
The movie "Sicko" is a proven fraud. Yes, we have some problems here in America with health care. However bone marrow and liver transplants are not common procedures in countries with socialized medicine either.
Who proved it to be fraud? Please state your source for this information. FOX News already had to cow down to Michael Moore in their critisism of his movie, over the details and statistics involved.
Watch the movie. Cuba was not ranked higher than the US in terms of its overall health care system. You keep spouting rehashed Bush/Giuliani diatribe about how the US has "the best medical care in the world". But that's only on the very top end of the spectrum. That's great if you're wealthy or some rich doctor(s) are willing to do some pro bono work. Ranking of the US vs. other nations are based on "overall" measurements.
Who decided the measurement? Who calculated the cost of care and the rate of taxation? Anyone look at availability of NEW treatments and medications? Anyone mention price controls?

She had Leukemia. A liver transplant may have been a long shot at best and only buying her a little more time to suffer. I don't think we are getting the whole story here. The insurance company probably cannot respond due to confidentiality.
she would've recovered as the doctors thought she would from the positive outcome of the bone marrow transplant. Cigna was obligated to pay for the liver transplant, it was in the insurance that they had to. They can't refuse just because they want to give more profits to their shareholders. I hope they get sued for every last penny as a wake up call to all insurers who do this regularly killing instead of paying up and then posting record profits as cigna did last quarter.
Yes, insurance companies are "regularly killing" people. This person was going to die soon or later. Go ahead and sue the insurance company and drive them out of business. Make people like Edwards rich and take away coverage for the rest of us.
they can burn or donate all the money from the lawsuit for all I care. The point is that it will be a wake up call to insurance companies to pay for procedures that are expensive especially if not doing so will result in death, instead of saving that money to hand out to their shareholders. They should follow their contract and pay up if someone is insured for a liver transplant instead of having them die.

I hate to break the news to you, but people are going to die. This poor girl had several medical problems. She was going to die some day. The company may have been wrong. We don't know all the facts in this case. However we have to realize that spending six figures on a transplant for a person with Leukemia does seem a bit excessive.
exactly you do not know all of the facts about this..I DO, I AM FAMILY! Therefore you should not state "I hate to break the news to you, but people are going to die. This poor girl had several medical problems. She was going to die some day. The company may have been wrong. We don't know all the facts in this case"
So what is your point? Did she not have several medical conditions? Was she is perfect health except for a failing liver? Everyone wants to blame the insurance company, who may or may not be at fault here. Tell us ALL the facts!
If you've got CINGA get the hell out. All co's are about to learn a lesson. Big picture--Not everything is decided in the marketplace. Healthcare deserves public support, nationalized or national STANDARDS with teeth. Greedy doctors unnecessary operations, versus greedy insurance co's, deserve "guilty of manslaughter" criminally, and about 1/2B in civil damages, when patients die. PERIOD.
Recently, I've waived my health care coverage my company was using because the SEC was Investigating the company over it's stock-options practices. I'm not paying for health care insurance since I'm not going to get it if I get sick or hurt.
John Edwards talked about this last night in Nevada, Iowa. He will end this practice as President.
How do we explain to our children that insurance companies are only out to make money, and will leave you to die at your greatest time of need, no matter who you are? Indifference and greed are un-American.
No president cares about you, or your healthcare. Your best bet is to get government out of the way. Let freedom and the market work, and you'll see just how good humans can be.
"History convinces me that most bad government results from too much government."
And large profit driven corporations do care about you, or your healthcare? This video is but one of many examples that show "just how good humans can be" within said confines.
ScienceDaily (May 16, 2007):The U.S. health care system ranks last compared with five other nations on measures of quality, access, efficiency, equity, and outcomes...The United States stands out as the only nation in these studies that does not ensure access to health care through universal coverage...
The study is predicated on the concept of "universal coverage". We do not have universal health care in America. We have the best medical care in the world. We develop the newest treatments and medications for the rest of the world.
"The study is predicated on the concept of "universal coverage"
You are wrong. If you have read the article, please read it again. It only compares "measures of quality, access, efficiency, equity, and outcomes" with 5 other nations (Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand and the United Kingdom) that do offer such coverage.
Obviously a country that offers universal coverage will cover everyone. That is what universal means. Since all would be covered equally, they would have access equally. Did the study take into account that Canada imports our drugs but places a price control on them? When was the last new drug for cancer discovered in Canada? How many vaccine manufacturers are in New Zealand or Austrila?
If you had done a search on the countries you mentioned, you would find that, in particular Canada, there has been significant research and discovery regarding cancer. But all of these countries are indeed overshadowed by the huge economic resources of the U.S. But, in that regard your own arguments work against you and for me. Why, being by far the richest country in the world, can we not provide for at least the basic health care of our citizens when they do?
Because capitalism has produced the best quality of health care in the world! There only way these countries that have socialized medicine survive is because we are providing the R&D for new medicines, treatments, and therapies. We do provide health care for our citizens which is why the system is in such a mess now. It is called Medicare and Medicaid.
While I respect your opinion, I disagree on both parts.
"...Medicare and Medicaid."
While both have their troubles, I'll tell you from personal experience. I saw both my parents (now deceased) through hospitals and nursing homes, and they were a godsend. I don't know what I would have done without them. They need work, true, but what do you suggest as an alternative? Their removal? To be replaced by what?
I am suggesting nothing. The fact is that Medicare and Medicaid are a large part of the troubles we have in health care. The government, in order to keep costs down, does not fully reimburse doctors and hospitals for the care they provide. 80% of what they approve leaves better than 20% of the care unpaid for. This cost is then shifted to private insurance and self-pay patients.
New York Times editorial "World's Best Medical Care?"(August 12, 2007): Many Americans are under the delusion that we have "the best health care system in the world," as President Bush sees it, or provide the "best medical care in the world," as Rudolph Giuliani declared last week. That may be true at many top medical centers. But the disturbing truth is that this country lags well behind other advanced nations in delivering timely and effective care.
So name one country of comparable size, that has better healthcare than we do. Again i say stop looking to the government for your answers. I hope they find cigna guilty, but each of these lawsuits only raise individual premiums to cover the cost of said lawsuits. i dont know what the solution is, i just know it ISNT government healthcare.
Just like 4951WEDDEL, you are comparing the tip of the iceberg to the rest of its mass. I'm not denying that at said pinnacle, the U.S. are world leaders. It's everywhere else that we're not. Every other advanced industrial nation has some form of universal health care. What do we supposedly know that they don't?
They know that we will produce the cutting edge treatments, medications, and facilities that they do not. You cannot provide FREE health care to everyone in America without harming long term quality and availability of care. Doctors will not work for school teacher wages. They will open private clinics and treat only the rich who can pay cash!
Socialized medicine have several benefits. The problem is long term. The United States is unique in many ways. If you are willing to accept a lower quality of care for EVERYONE and absolutely no choice for ANYONE, by all means go for socialized medicine. I predict once enacted, there will be flood of patients overwhelm both the providers and the government. Then care will be rationed.
the police in your country the fire brigade schools etc are socialized,
only diff between US and rest of the modern world is US has 1 less thing socialized which is health, most countries have socialized health care and an option for private for rich weirdo's how ever most people don't bother with the private
I think you are confusing socialism with all the things provided by the government. Yes, our police and fire protection are government run because public safety is a primary function of government. Providing health care for everyone is not a government function. Health care is service provided to those who pay for it. Price and quality are controlled by the market when not screw around with by the government.
"Providing health care for everyone is not a government function"
in most modern countries it is, it's like saying "police security is a service you pay for" as thats once how it is. socialized health care is normal around the world, your stuck in the US get out and travel, visit europe hell live there a few years I'm doing it now
We are not "most modern countries". We are the United States of America, the greatest nation in the world. If you ask our doctors and nurses, I don't think they want to be paid like our police, fire, and school teachers. I don't need to travel to Russia to know that communism was a failure. I don't need to visit Europe, to see their socialism fail either.
you dipshit check out the united nations human development index and look where the US is ranked lol.
I'd never seen a homeless person before till i went to the US, doctors here and in australia are paid very well, socialist health care and communism are 2 totally unrelated things.
If you want to believe the UN that is up to you. Check out who the members of the Human Right committee are. Every nation has homeless people. Those who are homeless in America usually choose to be that way because they don't want any responsibility. Communism and socialism are "cousins". Highest paid doctor in Australia $305,000.
you can say capitalism is a cousin of communism as it's economic model also.
capitalist market with a democratic government and strong constitution and government that provides 3 basic things for the people.
infrastructure
health
education
you just don't get it, europe has had successfull socialist health care for over 50 years wiht no problem even the poor have a longer life expentancy then the US. the US has a lot of poor people and is no where near the richest country in the world per head.
You must have a public (socialist) education. Capitalism and Communism are economic models, but with significant differences on matter of personal freedom. Europe hasn't been doing anything successfully for 50 years. Tell me how many companies in Europe manufacture vaccines or insulin? As for poor/rich, we have the greatest opportunity for achieving success than any other country. That is why everyone wants to come here.
every american who comes and stays at my house which is a lot as I'm popular on couch surfing dot com all comment on how expensive europe is for them, it was the russians who made it to space first. the whole US is the way to be a success is a US fed dream for poor mexicans. US isn't in the top 5 for ease of starting a company.
And yet everyone loans us money! Europe is expensive. I would not want to live there. You have your own problems to deal with. EVERYONE wants to come here, that is why we have limited legal immigration. It is not about ease of starting but the potential for success. Anyone in America can start their own company. There is a difference between health insurance and health care.
I am sure that Europe and Australia are wonderful places to live. As far as I am concerned, America is doing just fine. Socialism does not work independently. Without the US, your systems would not work. Do some actually research. Look into how many drugs are imported into Europe and how even the one's made there are by US companies.
it's a socialist health care system, europe hasn't banned drug companies lol hell they aint even banned insurance companies it's just you have no need for an insurance company thats what this is all about, the government pays for or subsidizes the drugs made by drug companies
I understand how the system works Mate! The government does not pay the full cost of developing the drugs. They have price controls. Our companies cannot sell the drugs at full price. This is the only way your socialized medicine works. It is subsidized by our consumers paying the full price and then some.
You are still missing the point. Socialized medicine is government run health care. Our government has enough trouble providing health care for the elderly and our veterans. Everyone who is screaming for universal coverage now, will be screaming because of higher taxes and rationed care later.
I am sure that there are those who are unhappy with the socialized medicine in Europe. The problem is that we are not Europe. We have a totally different structure to our nation. We do not expect the government to manage our health.
NOTHING is free. We pay taxes for our public education system, which is failing badly. We pay taxes for our police and fire protection as well. People are not just walking around sick. Doctors and Hospitals are busier than ever. Michael Moore is a joke.
you get more care, there is walk in doctors everywhere, you walk in wait no longer then 5 minutes, see the doctor for as long as ya want, then walk out
Maybe in smaller countries, but here there would be a flood of people going to doctors and hospitals. We have states with more people than many European countries. Our Medicare system, which takes care of those 62 and older, is almost bankrupt. The government does not even reimburse 80 cents for every dollar of care given.
well you have a flawed system how large a country is has nothing to do with it, you simply scale everything, be open minded I've told you a list of countries that have it work fine.
It does not work fine. Those countries control their costs with price controls. If America went socialized medicine, their days of low cost drugs would go out the window. Our population is simply to great in number. Socialized medicine would only work with low quality, rationed care and more government control of our lives.
A recent front-page story in the New York Times detailed the European cutbacks. According to the article, Britain, France and Germany are all being forced to limit access to care. Rationing, already extensive, is increasing.
4951WEDDEL you comments about medicare are disingenous. The reason medicare is going bankrupt is because it has been under assault sing that alzheimer's case Reagan began destroying it. Its hard run a system with no money, asshole
No, the reason Medicare has problems is that it was a bad idea from the start. It has always cost more than expected from the very beginning. That is why they started short changing the doctors and providers.
I don't think either of you are quite right. "sinnerjizm" certainly isn't right. It comes down to a system where those who work pay for those who are retired. As the ratio of 65 and older (mostly retired) to those who are under 65 (mostly working) increasing, there will be obvious budget pressures on Medicare.
I don't think either of you are quite right. It comes down to a system where those who work pay for those who are retired. As the ratio of 65 and older (mostly retired) to those who are under 65 (mostly working) increasing, there will be obvious budget pressures on Medicare.
You are comparing apples with oranges. It is true we have the best care in the top medical centers. That care eventually filters down to everyone. Anyone can go to the hospital and be treated. If you want socialized medicine be prepared for less quality and choices.
The "trickle down" theory doesn't work any better in regards to health care than it does in economics. Returning to the real issue at hand, "should basic health care of this nation continue to be placed in the hands of for-profit private companies, whose major motivation is the bottom line"? In my opinion, it is both immoral and unethical.
How do you expect the government to cover the cost of socialized medicine? It will come from the taxpayers. The only difference is instead of medical professionals (and yes evil insurance agencies) calling the shots, youll have government beaurocrats making the calls. And if you think that's better, let me put it to you this way:
Would you rather mail a package through the US Post Office or through FedEx? Both cost about the same, but private industry always provides a superior product.
You are making far too many assumptions. First, of all, "trickle economics" does work, but that is a different discussion. Health care is in the hands of the individual in this country. No one is forced to have health insurance. Many of the so called "uninsured", are that way by choice. They choose not to pay for insurance. If the government takes over, there will be no choice. Everyone will be taxed to pay for their care.
1> No it doesn't. 2> How many is "many"? Do you truly believe that the majority of uninsured people in this country are that way by choice? And that's not even the overriding issue. There are many more who are under insured because they cannot afford proper coverage. Even those who are insured are at the mercy of private insurance companies whose primary motivation is the bottom line. They don't make money by paying expensive claims. This video is but one example.
Actually, it does work. True, new treatments begin with the rich who can pay for them. However, in order to make a real profit on developing them, the companies eventually have to mass market them to others and make them more affordable. As for insurance, I know lots of people, mostly young, some just stupid, who would rather have the latest cellphone or nicer car or large flat screen, then pay for health insurance.
Yeah, you keep believing that. It is the big pharmaceutical companies that invest in developing new drugs. Most of the studies done at universities are funded by such companies.
no generally they buy them in the end like gardasil (spelling) for example.
the only ones the drug companies research in are things like viagra and fat treatment cos they know americans need it, where as things like cancer and aids are less profitable
Again, you are failing to make your point. Drug companies bring new drugs to market. It costs about a billion dollars to research, develop, and gain approval for a new drug. These costs have to be paid for by someone. Research is just one step is a very long and expensive process.
thats the US, india seems to be able to bring aids drugs to the market and sell them for 1/100th the price the US sells them for.
drug's companies and socialized health care are different the gov can still buy drugs from companies they do this in the UK, healthy people mean more workers, more workers mean more income for the government to fund everything;
Tell me, would you honestly take an AIDS drug manufactured in India if you had AIDS? India does not develop new drugs. They might make some drugs after stealing our formulas, but they don't research and develop new drugs. Socialized health care removes any reason for anyone to invest in new drugs and treatments.
Sadly, the way our modern-day Capitalist system has unfolded over the years, is upsetting and immoral in so many respects. From Enron to Adelphia to insurance company CEO's deciding who lives and dies, all this is abhorrent. Efficient government, universal healthcare, and new consumer laws are the ONLY answer. It works in Canada and Europe! We have been BRAINWASHED here in the U.S.!!!
How can we get them to respond? The candidates. How is it done? Instead of a broad based talking points. Whe will doctors be put back in charge of making patient decisions? When will these SOBs have enough? How much is enough profit? How much is enough? See Bill Moyers interview with John Bogle of the Vanguard Group. We are reliving the fall of Rome. Open up your eyes countrymen.
I pray this lawsuit is successful. Even though money can't replace a life it may save future lives by forcing insurance companies to pay for treatments. They'll do this out of fear of being sued and not out of compassion. But at least they'll do it.
I am so grateful to live in a country with free health care and when I hear stories about USA citizens losing their life and their homes to Insurance company's I have to ask this. WHY, WHY ARE THE CITIZENS OF THE ONCE POWERFUL USA ALLOWING THEMSELVES TO BE TREATED LIKE CATTLE? WHY DO YOU ALLOW YOUR GOV'T TO SPEND BILLIONS AND BILLIONS ON AN ILLEGAL PROFIT WAR AND YOU ARE LEFT DYING BECAUSE OF THE BOTTOM LINE OF A PROFIT HEALTH INDUSTRY? Get your shit together people and do something, really!
People who have healthcare insurance won't give a damn. They think they will never be affected. That their insurance will take care of them. That is until the day THEIR child gets sick and THEIR insurance won't cover a surgery or transplant. WAKE UP AMERICA!!! Next time it WILL BE YOUR FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whatever happened to caring about your fellow man? Jesus wouldn't have turned a deaf ear. Why are we as a nation? Let's demand change. We the people have power to change the nation!
This makes me positively sick, especially the notion that Cigna feels ANY sympathy for the family. They don't give a damn about anything except their bottom line. I hope they're charged with murder. That's exactly what they are... murderers.
Events like these that make me thankful to live in Britain. I hope the family gets justice for their daughter lost so unnecessarily, and that people demand change in American healthcare so tragic events like this don't happen again.
Why do we have to put up with this?!

4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
cigna didnt save any money. They were operating as an administrator owner and they didnt make the decisions on whether she should get a transplant or not. despite it not being their responsibility, they offered to pay for the transplant.
breakyournails 4 years ago
Since when has a transplant been experimental? They've been done for years now and with great success. This story is just sick and sad. If I were in this young girl's family i'd be so angry!
jmacgirl1 4 years ago 2
Talk to the Federal government. Medicare only pays for three years of ant--rejection drugs after a transplant. These are drugs that the person must take for the rest of their life.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
If current shareholders in the health care insurers went to their brokers and cleared their portfolios of such stock and insisted on ethical investing, this would help. Cigna will lose a lot of money, prestige, and perhaps face criminal charges. The candidates will have to address the issue or be perceived as out of touch.
pwarkentin2pc 4 years ago
American healthcare is an insurance scam. In Canada she'd have had the transplant.
BanjoBoog 4 years ago 3
I read a lot of arguments about shareholders in the insurance companies. The real concern should be about stakeholders in health care. Don't worry about shareholders: they'll move on when there is no longer anything to be gained by picking over carcasses.
pwarkentin2pc 4 years ago
Without shareholders, you probably would not have a job or insurance or a home or a car. It is easy to blame the "company" when things go wrong.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
Shareholders in health insurance companies do not provide any of those things. There are plenty of other companies to invest in. Your argument is absurd. The "company" in this case is criminal in thier actions.
pwarkentin2pc 4 years ago
Whether they are shareholder in an insurance company or not, ALL companies need investors. To single out a health insurance company's shareholders is wrong and "absurd".

The movie "Sicko" is a proven fraud. Yes, we have some problems here in America with health care. However bone marrow and liver transplants are not common procedures in countries with socialized medicine either.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
"The movie "Sicko" is a proven fraud."
Who proved it to be fraud? Please state your source for this information. FOX News already had to cow down to Michael Moore in their critisism of his movie, over the details and statistics involved.
Yogurt721 4 years ago
The movie was biased from start to finish. Does anyone actually believe Castro's Cuba has better health care than America?
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
Watch the movie. Cuba was not ranked higher than the US in terms of its overall health care system. You keep spouting rehashed Bush/Giuliani diatribe about how the US has "the best medical care in the world". But that's only on the very top end of the spectrum. That's great if you're wealthy or some rich doctor(s) are willing to do some pro bono work. Ranking of the US vs. other nations are based on "overall" measurements.
Yogurt721 4 years ago
Who decided the measurement? Who calculated the cost of care and the rate of taxation? Anyone look at availability of NEW treatments and medications? Anyone mention price controls?

She had Leukemia. A liver transplant may have been a long shot at best and only buying her a little more time to suffer. I don't think we are getting the whole story here. The insurance company probably cannot respond due to confidentiality.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
she would've recovered as the doctors thought she would from the positive outcome of the bone marrow transplant.
MsTal 4 years ago
Yes, insurance companies are "regularly killing" people. This person was going to die soon or later. Go ahead and sue the insurance company and drive them out of business. Make people like Edwards rich and take away coverage for the rest of us.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
they can burn or donate all the money from the lawsuit for all I care.

"History convinces me that most bad government results from too much government."

JeremyCross1982 4 years ago
And large profit driven corporations do care about you, or your healthcare? This video is but one of many examples that show "just how good humans can be" within said confines.
ScienceDaily (May 16, 2007):The U.S. health care system ranks last compared with five other nations on measures of quality, access, efficiency, equity, and outcomes...The United States stands out as the only nation in these studies that does not ensure access to health care through universal coverage...
Yogurt721 4 years ago
The study is predicated on the concept of "universal coverage". We do not have universal health care in America. We have the best medical care in the world. We develop the newest treatments and medications for the rest of the world.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
"The study is predicated on the concept of "universal coverage"
You are wrong. If you have read the article, please read it again. It only compares "measures of quality, access, efficiency, equity, and outcomes" with 5 other nations (Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand and the United Kingdom) that do offer such coverage.
Yogurt721 4 years ago
Obviously a country that offers universal coverage will cover everyone. That is what universal means. Since all would be covered equally, they would have access equally. Did the study take into account that Canada imports our drugs but places a price control on them? When was the last new drug for cancer discovered in Canada? How many vaccine manufacturers are in New Zealand or Austrila?
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
If you had done a search on the countries you mentioned, you would find that, in particular Canada, there has been significant research and discovery regarding cancer. But all of these countries are indeed overshadowed by the huge economic resources of the U.S. But, in that regard your own arguments work against you and for me. Why, being by far the richest country in the world, can we not provide for at least the basic health care of our citizens when they do?
Yogurt721 4 years ago
Because capitalism has produced the best quality of health care in the world! There only way these countries that have socialized medicine survive is because we are providing the R&D for new medicines, treatments, and therapies. We do provide health care for our citizens which is why the system is in such a mess now. It is called Medicare and Medicaid.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
"Because...therapies."
Yogurt721 4 years ago
I am suggesting nothing. The fact is that Medicare and Medicaid are a large part of the troubles we have in health care. The government, in order to keep costs down, does not fully reimburse doctors and hospitals for the care they provide. 80% of what they approve leaves better than 20% of the care unpaid for. This cost is then shifted to private insurance and self-pay patients.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
New York Times editorial "World's Best Medical Care?"(August 12, 2007): Many Americans are under the delusion that we have "the best health care system in the world," as President Bush sees it, or provide the "best medical care in the world," as Rudolph Giuliani declared last week. That may be true at many top medical centers. But the disturbing truth is that this country lags well behind other advanced nations in delivering timely and effective care.
Yogurt721 4 years ago
So name one country of comparable size, that has better healthcare than we do. Again i say stop looking to the government for your answers. I hope they find cigna guilty, but each of these lawsuits only raise individual premiums to cover the cost of said lawsuits. i dont know what the solution is, i just know it ISNT government healthcare.
JeremyCross1982 4 years ago
Just like 4951WEDDEL, you are comparing the tip of the iceberg to the rest of its mass. I'm not denying that at said pinnacle, the U.S. are world leaders. It's everywhere else that we're not. Every other advanced industrial nation has some form of universal health care. What do we supposedly know that they don't?
Yogurt721 4 years ago
They know that we will produce the cutting edge treatments, medications, and facilities that they do not. You cannot provide FREE health care to everyone in America without harming long term quality and availability of care. Doctors will not work for school teacher wages. They will open private clinics and treat only the rich who can pay cash!

So how is this rich capitalistic extremist health insurance better then a socialist one?
majority of europe has socialist health care, majority of the modern (western) world does. you have a socialist police force
mattbourke 4 years ago
Socialized medicine have several benefits. The problem is long term. The United States is unique in many ways. If you are willing to accept a lower quality of care for EVERYONE and absolutely no choice for ANYONE, by all means go for socialized medicine. I predict once enacted, there will be flood of patients overwhelm both the providers and the government. Then care will be rationed.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
I have no idea what you mean by a socialist police force.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
the police in your country the fire brigade schools etc are socialized,
only diff between US and rest of the modern world is US has 1 less thing socialized which is health, most countries have socialized health care and an option for private for rich weirdo's how ever most people don't bother with the private
mattbourke 4 years ago
I think you are confusing socialism with all the things provided by the government. Yes, our police and fire protection are government run because public safety is a primary function of government. Providing health care for everyone is not a government function. Health care is service provided to those who pay for it. Price and quality are controlled by the market when not screw around with by the government.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
"Providing health care for everyone is not a government function"
in most modern countries it is, it's like saying "police security is a service you pay for" as thats once how it is. socialized health care is normal around the world, your stuck in the US get out and travel, visit europe hell live there a few years I'm doing it now
mattbourke 4 years ago
We are not "most modern countries". We are the United States of America, the greatest nation in the world. If you ask our doctors and nurses, I don't think they want to be paid like our police, fire, and school teachers. I don't need to travel to Russia to know that communism was a failure. I don't need to visit Europe, to see their socialism fail either.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
you dipshit check out the united nations human development index and look where the US is ranked lol.
I'd never seen a homeless person before till i went to the US, doctors here and in australia are paid very well, socialist health care and communism are 2 totally unrelated things.
mattbourke 4 years ago
If you want to believe the UN that is up to you. Check out who the members of the Human Right committee are. Every nation has homeless people. Those who are homeless in America usually choose to be that way because they don't want any responsibility. Communism and socialism are "cousins". Highest paid doctor in Australia $305,000.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
you can say capitalism is a cousin of communism as it's economic model also.
capitalist market with a democratic government and strong constitution and government that provides 3 basic things for the people.
infrastructure
health
education
you just don't get it, europe has had successfull socialist health care for over 50 years wiht no problem even the poor have a longer life expentancy then the US. the US has a lot of poor people and is no where near the richest country in the world per head.
mattbourke 4 years ago
You must have a public (socialist) education. Capitalism and Communism are economic models, but with significant differences on matter of personal freedom. Europe hasn't been doing anything successfully for 50 years. Tell me how many companies in Europe manufacture vaccines or insulin? As for poor/rich, we have the greatest opportunity for achieving success than any other country. That is why everyone wants to come here.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago

mattbourke 4 years ago
And yet everyone loans us money! Europe is expensive. I would not want to live there. You have your own problems to deal with. EVERYONE wants to come here, that is why we have limited legal immigration. It is not about ease of starting but the potential for success. Anyone in America can start their own company. There is a difference between health insurance and health care.

anyway you obviously aint seen much of the world, experience it first hand then get back to me
mattbourke 4 years ago
I am sure that Europe and Australia are wonderful places to live. As far as I am concerned, America is doing just fine. Socialism does not work independently. Without the US, your systems would not work. Do some actually research. Look into how many drugs are imported into Europe and how even the one's made there are by US companies.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
it's a socialist health care system, europe hasn't banned drug companies lol hell they aint even banned insurance companies it's just you have no need for an insurance company thats what this is all about, the government pays for or subsidizes the drugs made by drug companies
mattbourke 4 years ago
I understand how the system works Mate! The government does not pay the full cost of developing the drugs. They have price controls. Our companies cannot sell the drugs at full price. This is the only way your socialized medicine works. It is subsidized by our consumers paying the full price and then some.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
lol
socialized health care, like hospital beds for free and operations, this isn't about some anti impotent drug for old men
mattbourke 4 years ago
You are still missing the point. Socialized medicine is government run health care. Our government has enough trouble providing health care for the elderly and our veterans. Everyone who is screaming for universal coverage now, will be screaming because of higher taxes and rationed care later.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
but why is no1 in europe complaining about socialized health care?
your people need a new government if they can't manage something as basic as health
mattbourke 4 years ago
I am sure that there are those who are unhappy with the socialized medicine in Europe. The problem is that we are not Europe. We have a totally different structure to our nation. We do not expect the government to manage our health.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
why do you expect the government to provide free education and free policing.
when everyone is sick around you it will effect you, so its a government role.
this video proves capitalist health fails people.

mattbourke 4 years ago
Maybe in smaller countries, but here there would be a flood of people going to doctors and hospitals. We have states with more people than many European countries. Our Medicare system, which takes care of those 62 and older, is almost bankrupt. The government does not even reimburse 80 cents for every dollar of care given.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
well you have a flawed system how large a country is has nothing to do with it, you simply scale everything, be open minded I've told you a list of countries that have it work fine.
don't be so negative
mattbourke 4 years ago
It does not work fine. Those countries control their costs with price controls. If America went socialized medicine, their days of low cost drugs would go out the window. Our population is simply to great in number. Socialized medicine would only work with low quality, rationed care and more government control of our lives.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
your very wrong.
it's close to a billion people in europe on socialized medicine.
your way out of touch with the system.
face it your health system is sick.
most countries look at other countries to see how they do things so they can improve on there own stuff

A recent front-page story in the New York Times detailed the European cutbacks. According to the article, Britain, France and Germany are all being forced to limit access to care. Rationing, already extensive, is increasing.

No, the reason Medicare has problems is that it was a bad idea from the start. It has always cost more than expected from the very beginning. That is why they started short changing the doctors and providers.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
Boneheads, the reason Medicare is going broke is because the government keeps stealing from it for things it was not intended for.
hiiamrick 4 years ago
I don't think either of you are quite right. "sinnerjizm" certainly isn't right. It comes down to a system where those who work pay for those who are retired. As the ratio of 65 and older (mostly retired) to those who are under 65 (mostly working) increasing, there will be obvious budget pressures on Medicare.
martinking68 3 years ago

You are comparing apples with oranges. It is true we have the best care in the top medical centers. That care eventually filters down to everyone. Anyone can go to the hospital and be treated. If you want socialized medicine be prepared for less quality and choices.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
The "trickle down" theory doesn't work any better in regards to health care than it does in economics. Returning to the real issue at hand, "should basic health care of this nation continue to be placed in the hands of for-profit private companies, whose major motivation is the bottom line"? In my opinion, it is both immoral and unethical.
Yogurt721 4 years ago
How do you expect the government to cover the cost of socialized medicine? It will come from the taxpayers. The only difference is instead of medical professionals (and yes evil insurance agencies) calling the shots, youll have government beaurocrats making the calls. And if you think that's better, let me put it to you this way:
Would you rather mail a package through the US Post Office or through FedEx? Both cost about the same, but private industry always provides a superior product.
JeremyCross1982 4 years ago
You are making far too many assumptions. First, of all, "trickle economics" does work, but that is a different discussion. Health care is in the hands of the individual in this country. No one is forced to have health insurance. Many of the so called "uninsured", are that way by choice. They choose not to pay for insurance. If the government takes over, there will be no choice. Everyone will be taxed to pay for their care.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
1> No it doesn't. 2> How many is "many"? Do you truly believe that the majority of uninsured people in this country are that way by choice? And that's not even the overriding issue. There are many more who are under insured because they cannot afford proper coverage. Even those who are insured are at the mercy of private insurance companies whose primary motivation is the bottom line. They don't make money by paying expensive claims. This video is but one example.
Yogurt721 4 years ago
Actually, it does work. True, new treatments begin with the rich who can pay for them. However, in order to make a real profit on developing them, the companies eventually have to mass market them to others and make them more affordable. As for insurance, I know lots of people, mostly young, some just stupid, who would rather have the latest cellphone or nicer car or large flat screen, then pay for health insurance.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
majority of the worlds "new treatments" historically we discovered in socialized universities around the world
mattbourke 4 years ago
Yeah, you keep believing that. It is the big pharmaceutical companies that invest in developing new drugs. Most of the studies done at universities are funded by such companies.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
no generally they buy them in the end like gardasil (spelling) for example.
the only ones the drug companies research in are things like viagra and fat treatment cos they know americans need it, where as things like cancer and aids are less profitable
mattbourke 4 years ago
Again, you are failing to make your point. Drug companies bring new drugs to market. It costs about a billion dollars to research, develop, and gain approval for a new drug. These costs have to be paid for by someone. Research is just one step is a very long and expensive process.
4951WEDDEL 4 years ago
thats the US, india seems to be able to bring aids drugs to the market and sell them for 1/100th the price the US sells them for.
drug's companies and socialized health care are different the gov can still buy drugs from companies they do this in the UK, healthy people mean more workers, more workers mean more income for the government to fund everything;
mattbourke 4 years ago
Tell me, would you honestly take an AIDS drug manufactured in India if you had AIDS? India does not develop new drugs. They might make some drugs after stealing our formulas, but they don't research and develop new drugs. Socialized health care removes any reason for anyone to invest in new drugs and treatments.
