The man was powerful and did a lot for blacks, especially black women. However, just because this man did so much for people, doesn't mean his theology is correct. With scripture he preached of God's presence in people but he took that same scripture and called himself God. There's everything wrong with this picture. Just because people are doing something for you, doesn't mean that everything they say is truth. Let's stray away from darkness and seek The Way The Truth and The Light
OMG...he was a womanizer and had multiple children as a preacher!!! and some of the women were underage!!! ... give me a break acting like he was god.... He was a man, human and with faults that is the truth look it up. before you act like a man is above reproach...I love the real GOD....this man above did alot of good as well but he was no saint...
Are you making that stuff up? I couldn't find anything about him fathering any children. In fact, he himself was probably celibate. Sounds like you're just digging up old afro-american stereotypes to me.
I'm African American a 60"s child I have read articles on Father Divine It is wrong to tell lies but to express ones opinion based on fact is a must. The man was a womanizer that said He was at times a great person but we know Man can be corrupted by Money and Flesh.GOOGLE the info in my day We actually read. We as Americans need to stop trying to clean up history. Example Martin Luther King was a womanizer and He was stiill wonderful as a leader of the world. This is a fact Read & U will know
@seanviv2 That sounds a little snobbish. Digital media doesn't qualify as 'actual reading?' And what? Newspapers and books are always factual, and aren't tainted with personal opinion, or just plain propaganda? Maybe he was a womanizer? Maybe he just like women. Unlike MLK, FD's womanizing doesn't seem that obvious.
that's a good point, but this doesn't mean that because he preached it, that he practiced such. But at the end of the day, whether he did or not, doesn't change what we have to do, in terms of following and obeying our Lord.
As many preachers are and you have to realize, "underage" is a legal definition, from state to state & during those times, the standards were different than today. Not to accuse sex outside of lawful marriage, but to put this in its perspective.
I would really appreciate If you could cite just ONE reliable source to support at least ONE of your statements about Father Divine, so that I could "look it up".
This man is a Blessed soul.... He was a futurist... Seeing how things ought to be, and preaching the truth of God's blessed plan for humanity. Makes me ashamed that i have not been to church for years. God bless Father Divine
He was a disciple of Father Jehovia at the turn of the 20th century...& the movement he joined & the section he led can be summed up as a crusade for social justice centered around the realization of God's actual presence in Man.
Father Divine was a superhuman hero. I have studied him since 1982, I am amazed at what he accomphlished. He turned down enormous sums of money from outsiders. He made his followers go back and pay all back bills before they could become a follower. He could have just as easily take that money for himself.
He didn't need money from 'outsiders',his movement survived on the total turn over of wealth & subsidies from extremely wealthy followers whose minds & lives he controlled.
Father Divine's movement have been carefully researched and documented by independent scholars. Just as an example, most Peace Mission properties were purchased by groups of followers pooling their money for that purpose. The property bought legally belonged to them in shares equal to their contributions. They could sell their share within the group if they wished to part. If they died their share was equally divided among the remaining members of the group.
And I noticed that he got in the car, followed by a White woman. Was that his woman? Was'nt it a crime for a Negro man to be with a White woman?

He married a white woman in 1946.And yes,in many places in the USA & elsewhere that was a 'crime'.

But

that was precisely why he did it.

To challenge & 'overthrow' that what he said was 'all unrighteousness'.

And 'color coding' humans was 'unrighteousness' to Father Divine.

I agree. I choose to view him as a historic figure in the life of black people, recognizing the good he did, especially during the depression.
