@highschoolmusical841 Ian Dury and the Blockheads are AWESOME I picked up on Reasons To Be Cheerful, Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and What A Waste several years back (only 31 I couldn't imagine how great it had to have been experiencing these songs being released NEW ) and didn't hear my favorite song of his for the first time until a couple months back "There Aint Half Been Some Clever Bastards" MUSIC HALL! BRILLIANT!
@highschoolmusical841 Ellen Foley? No I have not though a suggestion coming from a person with such impeccable taste as yourself I will have to check this out. Is there anywhere certain I should start? I see on Wikipedia that she worked with Meatloaf. I have heard those songs and love her voice though I don't know any of her solo stuff. I see her 79' debut has a single written by Jagger and Richards...and holy shit Hitsville UK!!!!! writing should I stay or should I go? OMG WTF
@highschoolmusical841 OK now your officially my favorite person on YouTube!!!!! What more can I say about the Clash? "White Man In Hammersmith Palais" "Washington Bullets" "Innoculated City" "Red Angel Dragnet" "Lovers Rock" "Career Opportunities" "Clampdown" "Death Or Glory" "Magnificent 7" "The Call Up" Charlie Don't Surf" "Spanish Bombs" "Lose This Skin" "Straight To Hell" and "Know Your Rights" the list goes on and on!!! Don't get me started on some Big Audio Dynamite either!!!
@Annamandabella I read somewhere and have seen videos here on YouTube also but I could swear there were some ill feelings between Weller and the late Mr Strummer. From the line in "White Man" about the "new groups in their Burton suits" selling rebellion for money and Strummer in 84' during their unfortunately crappy "Cut The Crap" phase calling out the "fake soul boys" (who else besides Boy George could he have been referring to? Theres another video around here somewhere where Weller
@Annamandabella says the Clash should never reunite or something to that affect or is it effect? Anyway I still dig your selections and whole heartedly agree with you on those other two bands. Jerry Dammers is rock royalty in my world for his work with Ska and Two Tone!!!!! The only Selecter songs I have ever heard are "On My Radio" (CLASSIC) and "Missing Words" The Specials are right up there with the Beatles in my book though I really like The Fun Boy Three also there David Byrne produced 1982
@Annamandabella album waiting has the most extraordinary middle section of an album with "Were Having All The Fun" "Farmyard Connection" Tunnel Of Love" and The GoGos "Our Lips Are Sealed" cover that in my opinion trumps the original. Other favorite artists in this genre would be OF COURSE Madness, The Beat "Ranking Full Stop" and their superb cover of "Tears Of A Clown" being the standouts and Rhoda from The Bodysnatchers "Boiler" is a frightening though classic piece of poetry set to music.
women's fashion styles in the mid-eighties were mank and sad. I remember Mod girls around that time wearing the stupid berets and michael Jackson gloves, they looked ridiculous. Weller of course is as cool as ever. Great song. Mick Talbot, I dunno. Even his Mod-Revival band The Merton Parkas were luke warm at best and rubbish at worst
paul weller a truly two faced cunt of the eighties slag anyone off that was more sucessful and talented than him' and that working class horse shit he used to spout he would'nt now what working class was he just pretended all the things he used to slag off he has become 'yeah and sends his kids to private school what a fucking sell out
I always thought The Smiths were the greatest band of the mid 80's though after repeated listening to this truly uplifting music from Weller and the Council I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. Goodbye Marr and Morrisey. That part were he says "You must believe you've got the power" and it goes into Dee's sermon is magical. I love how the horn section looks so melancholic. "Walls Come Tumbling" "Speak Like A Child""Ever Changing Moods""Long Hot Summer""Shout To The Top" CLASSICS.
I wonder if they realized when they recorded this that the drumming is very similar to Chicago's "does anybody really know what time it is" with a speeded up tempo. Could they have been influenced by Chicago??
Agreed!! They took Motown and gave it their own edge. I can't say I am a fan opf Chicago but they do have some OK tunes that I remember from my childhood.
Colgonk. Try gmaj7th at third fret add the e note on fifth fret to make gmaj7/6th for half bar. Next go to aminor7th on the fifth fret adding high b note on 7th fret for aminor9th on half bar. After that you're on your own mate. But that's the hook of the song.
@ThePetepiper -THose were days of real music and talent. Now it's all Balladesque Xfactor Shite. Thanks Cowellski you single handedly ruined British music.
style council have always captured the mood of the age and sentiment of britain in the eighties with their songs...and headstart for happiness is no exception...
Blackmore4..you need to get right over yourself, fella and calm the head down. I think I'd speak for a lot of people when I say that no one is interested in your bout of manic depression. A great song from a great band. I've been trying to find the chords for this one for years. Damned difficult song to play. Lyrics I can find, but tabs just aren't out there. Anyone know of a link to them?
The two girls on the horns, look like they're "thrilled to death" to be in the video. I've seen sloths on qualudes, with more enthusiasm. On the upside, isn't Dee C. Lee a breath of fresh air. Love her vocals on "The Gardener of Eden".
@arfer I couldn't agree more. It is not possible to take a chair and turn it into a cup. Some people are happy and free, while others are sad and gray. The latter will never be happy. It's a matter of state of mind, perhaps. The best thing to do is avoid them. Bad company are unnecessary, usually angry and extremely boring-blah-blah-blah people. They need to be ignored.
Circa 1985,Merton Mick developed a fixation concerning carparks.Apparantly he became persecuted by the belief that they were springing up everywhere around the merton park/morden area.He also developed a penchant for shouting peewee for no discernable reason. He developed alopaecia as result.
i agree. solid bond in your heart is another really happy tune. The style of the style council was much more jazzy which is why alot of the JAm following didn't like the sound. You have to remember the Jam started as a punk band so you can understand why there is so much hate. I loved the Jam and also the style council. But the different styles fitted in with the times. But whatever... Paul Wellar is alegend NO DOUBT!!!

An "absolute blast" were they? Tell that to the miners and my ears. The 80's were a bloody nightmare. A particularly bad time for bass guitar styles... no, absolutely everything. You probably voted Thatcher and wore shoulder pads right?
Have you considered finding treatment for what's been hurting you?
There were groups in every era that had a hard time and the miners were the ones who did in the '80s. But that life was hard for some didn't mean that everyone was miserable. There were good and bad times in everyone's life.
I only remember being being young. Something you might want to try one day.
Yes I did consider it (finding treatment) and took it beginning in 1983. That I've been manic depression-free since 1993 speaks volumes. I'm pleased you were unaffected by the greed, selfishness and general cultural horror but listen to the opinions of many of the artists that flourished in the 90's (Jarvis Cocker, Blur, Suede etc) - even some who 'made it' in the 80's (Morrissey) to discover my feelings are more common than you suppose.
I like this one... it's one of those night time city lights songs... or on the boardwalk on a sunny day... oh excuse me, this happy song has me daydreaming...

I love the Style Council, but I wish that we got to hear just Mick and Steve singing together more. The female vocalist got in the way a lot, I think. The two males sounded fantastic together.
you're masochistic, admitting it to yourself AND leaving notes like the one i'm replying to. if you really think they're awful, watch something else. i for one think it's amazing. Ü
Thanks for posting. Can't tell you how many times I played this in my youth to give myself a shot in the arm when I was scared. 'In yourself and all you've got to take this world and shake it up'. Still trying to shake it up...
This is the best version. I am biased as I had a girlfriend who was the spit of DC Lee. Weller is God's second son. Steve White looks like he should still be at school.
At the risk of sounding like a mutual appreciation society, I have to agree with the two previous posters, the version on "Introducing The Style Council" is far better, a very good c.d. if you're interested, I bought the vinyl as a 17 year-old in 1983, happy days.
I agree with sanityinspector, the original EP (live in studio) version was a classic, acoustic Weller, and as good as he is today. All subsequent versions were just to "glossy". I played that EP to death Xmas 83, and it still works when I can be bothered to get the turntable out. Weller is still the man.
I loved the EP version of this song, used to play it when I was a college radio dj. This version? Meh. The horns and the female vocals just get in the way, IMO. Thanks for posting, though; it's a nice memory anyway.
KIDS T.V. IN THE 70s/80s IN THE U.K. WAS INCREDIBLY DIVERSE..YOU WOULD GET APPEARANCES BY BANDS WHO WOULD HAVE STRUGGLED TO GET FIVE MINUTES AT MIDNIGHT COME THE MEDIA INTEGRATED NINETIES..
REMEMBER POP KIDS..TAKE THAT ONLY "BROKE" AFTER ANDY PETERS, THE O-ZONE ET AL PLAYED(and proBABLY FUCKED)THEM TO DEATH...
According to Wikipedia, that was a children's TV show from 1982-1987. What a cool song for a kid's show! Anyway, it's my favorite Style Council song, so thank you, thank you, thank you for posting it!

It's possible. I know exactly what you mean. However, these guys were channeling "Northern Soul", a Brit genre that is itself channeling, Mortown .
So was Chicago a logical progression of Motown soul? Yeah.
But so were these guys.
So I say, two bands coming from the same place but ending up at a slightly different destination.

Believe in yourself, what a nice reminder in days like these.
Weller looks young like in the Jam days.

oh god, i've inflicted yet another style council song upon myself when i've already determined beyond reasonable doubt that they're awful.
conventionalspoon 4 years ago
you're masochistic, admitting it to yourself AND leaving notes like the one i'm replying to. if you really think they're awful, watch something else. i for one think it's amazing. Ü

Thanks for posting. Can't tell you how many times I played this in my youth to give myself a shot in the arm when I was scared. 'In yourself and all you've got to take this world and shake it up'. Still trying to shake it up...

Weller's not as good a singer as the other guy. And those girls on the trumpet/sax... awful awful!

Everyone in this video is so cute! Even Weller looks cute. Talbot sings really well.
DC Lee is fucking gorgeous.
Weller's jazz-model Rickenbacker guitar is very cool - that's gotta be rare.

I prefer this version coz Dee's on it and Steve Whites drumming is amazing as usual. This is the Style Council at their best

This is a decent version but the acoustic version is amazing...It was originally available on the Money go round 12".

I would love to have that Rickenbacker guitar. It is an extremely rare model here in the U.S.

The whole thing gave me chills. So cool to see them "playing" it. I must've listened, sung along with that song like 10,000 times.

NOT THAT SUCH TRIVIALITIES ARE RELEVANT HERE..

What is this from? Is it a music video, or from a TV show?

It's from BBC Saturday Superstore

According to Wikipedia, that was a children's TV show from 1982-1987. What a cool song for a kid's show! Anyway, it's my favorite Style Council song, so thank you, thank you, thank you for posting it!
