  • LOL Never knew that was Mick singing! Loved this song

  • Mick whata fucking goof. No wonder I hated the Clowncil.

  • Fucking great song

  • love tsc

  • dee c lee the backing vocals and weller,s wife its stuning and beauty here!!!!

  • I had no idea that Mick sang the first verse of this song.

  • Classic TSC, Paul & Dee great late 80's english pop!

Far cry from the i-pod muzak shite of today!

  • Hands down the coolest band ever with the champion sound. Children here's the bar, awfully high I know. Could your at least try getting near it?

  • I love Dee Cee!

  • thanks

  • The French went nuts for this album. Cafe Bleu was nothing short of the story of Paris in the 1980s.

This takes me back to those student days like no one's business. I listen to this song, close my eyes and I'm back in a damp, musty ground floor apartment in Melimontant...when it was African, Arab and Brazilian...and a decade before it was gentrified.

Cohabitation, student riots and a vibrant underground Jazz scent...Paris 1987. What a place.

  • Is there a giant fart at 0:09?

  • nice VHS fart you had there, well dont matter, I love VHS recordings ;DD they're so me childhood and cool.

  • what album is this version off of? Does anybody know?.....A little help out there....

  • @wklosek42 This is from Cafe Bleu, the version published in N America.

  • @highschoolmusical841 Ian Dury and the Blockheads are AWESOME I picked up on Reasons To Be Cheerful, Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and What A Waste several years back (only 31 I couldn't imagine how great it had to have been experiencing these songs being released NEW ) and didn't hear my favorite song of his for the first time until a couple months back "There Aint Half Been Some Clever Bastards" MUSIC HALL! BRILLIANT!

  • @Annamandabella ian dury shit... tsc...

     bang on

  • @highschoolmusical841 You learn something new everyday!!!!!! THANK YOU!!

  • @highschoolmusical841 Ellen Foley? No I have not though a suggestion coming from a person with such impeccable taste as yourself I will have to check this out. Is there anywhere certain I should start? I see on Wikipedia that she worked with Meatloaf. I have heard those songs and love her voice though I don't know any of her solo stuff. I see her 79' debut has a single written by Jagger and Richards...and holy shit Hitsville UK!!!!! writing should I stay or should I go? OMG WTF

  • I LOVE BRITISH MUSIC.

  • @highschoolmusical841 OK now your officially my favorite person on YouTube!!!!! What more can I say about the Clash? "White Man In Hammersmith Palais" "Washington Bullets" "Innoculated City" "Red Angel Dragnet" "Lovers Rock" "Career Opportunities" "Clampdown" "Death Or Glory" "Magnificent 7" "The Call Up" Charlie Don't Surf" "Spanish Bombs" "Lose This Skin" "Straight To Hell" and "Know Your Rights" the list goes on and on!!! Don't get me started on some Big Audio Dynamite either!!!

  • @Annamandabella I read somewhere and have seen videos here on YouTube also but I could swear there were some ill feelings between Weller and the late Mr Strummer. From the line in "White Man" about the "new groups in their Burton suits" selling rebellion for money and Strummer in 84' during their unfortunately crappy "Cut The Crap" phase calling out the "fake soul boys" (who else besides Boy George could he have been referring to? Theres another video around here somewhere where Weller

  • @Annamandabella says the Clash should never reunite or something to that affect or is it effect? Anyway I still dig your selections and whole heartedly agree with you on those other two bands. Jerry Dammers is rock royalty in my world for his work with Ska and Two Tone!!!!! The only Selecter songs I have ever heard are "On My Radio" (CLASSIC) and "Missing Words" The Specials are right up there with the Beatles in my book though I really like The Fun Boy Three also there David Byrne produced 1982

  • @Annamandabella album waiting has the most extraordinary middle section of an album with "Were Having All The Fun" "Farmyard Connection" Tunnel Of Love" and The GoGos "Our Lips Are Sealed" cover that in my opinion trumps the original. Other favorite artists in this genre would be OF COURSE Madness, The Beat "Ranking Full Stop" and their superb cover of "Tears Of A Clown" being the standouts and Rhoda from The Bodysnatchers "Boiler" is a frightening though classic piece of poetry set to music.

  • I want that Guitar !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • Blimey, I remember taping this off Saturday Superstore yonks ago, jesus, still have the tape somewhere

  • women's fashion styles in the mid-eighties were mank and sad. I remember Mod girls around that time wearing the stupid berets and michael Jackson gloves, they looked ridiculous. Weller of course is as cool as ever. Great song. Mick Talbot, I dunno. Even his Mod-Revival band The Merton Parkas were luke warm at best and rubbish at worst

  • This man is one of the greats - up there just behind Lennon and McCartney.

  • Nice song.

  • paul weller a truly two faced cunt of the eighties slag anyone off that was more sucessful and talented than him' and that working class horse shit he used to spout he would'nt now what working class was he just pretended all the things he used to slag off he has become 'yeah and sends his kids to private school what a fucking sell out

  • @wozzi71 Hi Rick, who are you drumming with nowadays?

  • @Angrytownnews arf! love that!

  • I always thought The Smiths were the greatest band of the mid 80's though after repeated listening to this truly uplifting music from Weller and the Council I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. Goodbye Marr and Morrisey. That part were he says "You must believe you've got the power" and it goes into Dee's sermon is magical. I love how the horn section looks so melancholic. "Walls Come Tumbling" "Speak Like A Child""Ever Changing Moods""Long Hot Summer""Shout To The Top" CLASSICS.

  • この曲は、後半での女性ボーカルが、聴きどころ!!ポール・ウェラーの構成が最高!!!kakkoii!!

  • Poor Mick...What's that noise?

  • they come and go... we special Weller x

  • From A BBC prog i think.... i 've got a performance of 'My Ever Changing Moods' from the same show.

  • Nice version and video thanks!

  • I'm glad to see and hear this, after so many years, so thanks. But you know, I think I prefer the guitar + organ version on their first EP more.

  • Northern Soul Chicago? You 2 idiots have no idea of what this 'middle england' tosh is all about!!!!!!!!

  • I wonder if they realized when they recorded this that the drumming is very similar to Chicago's "does anybody really know what time it is" with a speeded up tempo. Could they have been influenced by Chicago??

  • It's possible. I know exactly what you mean. However, these guys were channeling "Northern Soul", a Brit genre that is itself channeling, Mortown .

So was Chicago a logical progression of Motown soul? Yeah.

    But so were these guys.

So I say, two bands coming from the same place but ending up at a slightly different destination.

    What say you?

  • Agreed!! They took Motown and gave it their own edge. I can't say I am a fan opf Chicago but they do have some OK tunes that I remember from my childhood.

  • That is the coolest guitar evarr.

  • she's a boo'ty in't she

  • Bugger those two - that guitar is the beauty i want!

  • D.C. Lee was a lucky bitch being married to him, theyr as beautiful as each other...

  • very great song. awesome D.C. Lee

  • "'...rise above the lies...." beautiful.

  • Colgonk. Try gmaj7th at third fret add the e note on fifth fret to make gmaj7/6th for half bar. Next go to aminor7th on the fifth fret adding high b note on 7th fret for aminor9th on half bar. After that you're on your own mate. But that's the hook of the song.

  • First The Jam Then The Style Council, Paul Weller Is a legend. Truly One of Englands finest. Always.

  • @ThePetepiper -THose were days of real music and talent. Now it's all Balladesque Xfactor Shite. Thanks Cowellski you single handedly ruined British music.

  • style council have always captured the mood of the age and sentiment of britain in the eighties with their songs...and headstart for happiness is no exception...

  • Listen to the lyrics what an awesome song TSC Weller at his best :)

  • just take this world and shake it up

  • Blackmore4..you need to get right over yourself, fella and calm the head down. I think I'd speak for a lot of people when I say that no one is interested in your bout of manic depression. A great song from a great band. I've been trying to find the chords for this one for years. Damned difficult song to play. Lyrics I can find, but tabs just aren't out there. Anyone know of a link to them?

  • Aw Dee C. is so lovely.

  • The two girls on the horns, look like they're "thrilled to death" to be in the video. I've seen sloths on qualudes, with more enthusiasm. On the upside, isn't Dee C. Lee a breath of fresh air. Love her vocals on "The Gardener of Eden".

  • HAHA lol PEACE FROM ATL

  • Gotta say though, I prefer the older B Side version of this with just Paul singing.

  • Wonderful. Is it wrong to be optimistic? No. This song made me feel great in 1984. That's a good thing.

  • @arfer I couldn't agree more. It is not possible to take a chair and turn it into a cup. Some people are happy and free, while others are sad and gray. The latter will never be happy. It's a matter of state of mind, perhaps. The best thing to do is avoid them. Bad company are unnecessary, usually angry and extremely boring-blah-blah-blah people. They need to be ignored.

  • Great lyrics! One of my fav's.

  • I love this song, and I did!

  • Love the way the vocals are shared on this song - still makes me smile on a rainy day in the car to work nice posting !

  • YYYEEEAAAHHH :)

  • you would have had lived in the 80s to know what it was like. great decade in every aspect.

  • You sound like a post-war German who made it to Bolivia. The 80's were culturally and politically totally poisonous.

  • was looking for the best style council song, maybe this one?

  • Comment removed

  • Weller is GOD!

  • Great vintage Rickenbacker, Weller... Classic song from the quintessential 80's band.

  • What a load of pure Weller Bollox

  • its a great video

  • Love the video, it is so much fun!

  • Did Talbot rip one at 00:11?

  • hahaha, lol, I have heard it too

  • Circa 1985,Merton Mick developed a fixation concerning carparks.Apparantly he became persecuted by the belief that they were springing up everywhere around the merton park/morden area.He also developed a penchant for shouting peewee for no discernable reason. He developed alopaecia as result.

  • Mick Talbot is a GOOF.

  • Holy Fuck! Holy Fuck Fuck!! I love it too!!!

  • HOLY FUCK I LOVE THIS SONG

    (sorry for swearing....)

  • dc lee mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • Eh?

  • dee c lee , the female singer

  • Oh yeah...of course! Great tune.

  • Christ...is there anything Paul Weller puts out that isn't fantastic? What has he been doing with himself today?

  • classic love it !! memories man xxx

  • What model Rick is he playing ? Never seen one like this.

  • It's a 1959 - 1968 360f, They are pretty rear and worth a bit.

  • I don't get some of the style council hate. They weren't the Jam, granted, but Weller was still a great tunesmith. This one always cheers me up...

And it probably best that he was able to expand his horizons in some way.

  • i agree. solid bond in your heart is another really happy tune. The style of the style council was much more jazzy which is why alot of the JAm following didn't like the sound. You have to remember the Jam started as a punk band so you can understand why there is so much hate. I loved the Jam and also the style council. But the different styles fitted in with the times. But whatever... Paul Wellar is alegend NO DOUBT!!!

  • agreed, I was 15 when the Jam split, just months after I'd got into them, so the Style Council were a major part of my youth.

  • I liked this at the time...but now it just screams...Wings.

  • great song but Talbot was a tit!

  • arnt the style council such a beutifull band .i fckn loved them .i was pissed off when thejam split ,but just listen to their records.weller is a total genius

  • great tune, fucking hell i almost feel happy.

  • ahahahhahahahha

    same here, mate.

  • chissà come mai dopo tanti anni siamo ancora quì ad ascoltare queste bellissime canzoni

  • How this song takes me back. Bloody brilliant.

The '80s were an absolute blast. Thanks so much for the posting.

  • An "absolute blast" were they? Tell that to the miners and my ears. The 80's were a bloody nightmare. A particularly bad time for bass guitar styles... no, absolutely everything. You probably voted Thatcher and wore shoulder pads right?

  • Have you considered finding treatment for what's been hurting you?

There were groups in every era that had a hard time and the miners were the ones who did in the '80s. But that life was hard for some didn't mean that everyone was miserable. There were good and bad times in everyone's life.

I only remember being being young. Something you might want to try one day.

  • Yes I did consider it (finding treatment) and took it beginning in 1983. That I've been manic depression-free since 1993 speaks volumes. I'm pleased you were unaffected by the greed, selfishness and general cultural horror but listen to the opinions of many of the artists that flourished in the 90's (Jarvis Cocker, Blur, Suede etc) - even some who 'made it' in the 80's (Morrissey) to discover my feelings are more common than you suppose.

  • This song is one of my most favorite of my youthtime. Brilliant work from The Cappucino Kid, I still play these nowadays. Not dated at all I think

  • I like this one... it's one of those night time city lights songs... or on the boardwalk on a sunny day... oh excuse me, this happy song has me daydreaming...

  • girl in black beret, yeah you with no rhyme, I love you!

  • Although it is slightly dated, its still as cool as f*ck, especially the white piano

  • Crazy Beauty! :)

  • I remember watching this on Saturday Superstore - they did 2 songs that morning - i can't remeber what the other was; but i have it on a betamax video tape; somewhere

  • My Ever Changing Moods was the other song they played, remember it well.

  • And the rest they had more than just one single. Thats why they released the album singular adventures.

  • billyhunt is saying that the other song on the tv programme was MECM...

    not what you thought...

    twit

  • Anyone know the model of that beautiful Rickenbacker Weller is playing?

PS. I'm sure Mick Talbot was Dougals milk man.

  • It's a Rickenbacker 360F. Pretty rare bird.

  • Mick, I love ya my old son, but nicht with the singing mate..it's painful ain't it...

  • Dc lee is die perle des Liedes ... now listen....big love

  • One of my all time fave T.S.C tunes. I've been trying to learn it on guitar for years...bloody difficult! Gods teeth! but that brought a lump to my throat! I'm away for a dig through my collection and trail out some more of the greats!YouTube....You've just got to love it!

    ColGonk

  • Steve White is the drummer and an important collaborator for the Style Council music. Steve plays drums for Paul Weller to this day.

  • Thanks :-)

  • I love the Style Council, but I wish that we got to hear just Mick and Steve singing together more. The female vocalist got in the way a lot, I think. The two males sounded fantastic together.

  • Mick and Paul. Mick and Paul. Who's this Steve? I'm a moron.

  • shame mick didn't sing more he's got a decent voice

  • Nice guitar.

  • The Style Council was one of the best bands of the 80's. Too bad they didn't ever make a mark in the US.

  • A great song and yes, I agree, DC Lee is very beautiful. I'm not surprised Paul Weller fell in love with her. She has great style

  • is dc lee not the most attractive women and bwst female artist of the 80s

  • D.C. Lee at 2:00! Hachi Machi!

  • awesome song

    80's stetych

  • Believe in yourself, what a nice reminder in days like these.

Weller looks young like in the Jam days.

  • you're masochistic, admitting it to yourself AND leaving notes like the one i'm replying to. if you really think they're awful, watch something else. i for one think it's amazing. Ü

  • Thank for posting this video of my all-time favorite song. :)

  • well they`re still as fresh today as they were then.

  • Man, Style Council is hitting the spot on an Oktoberfest hangover afternoon..

  • Thanks for posting. Can't tell you how many times I played this in my youth to give myself a shot in the arm when I was scared. 'In yourself and all you've got to take this world and shake it up'. Still trying to shake it up...

  • Weller's not as good a singer as the other guy. And those girls on the trumpet/sax... awful awful!

  • Everyone in this video is so cute! Even Weller looks cute. Talbot sings really well.

    DC Lee is fucking gorgeous.

Weller's jazz-model Rickenbacker guitar is very cool - that's gotta be rare.

  • I like Mick's voice. Really!!

  • TSC is still one of my favorite groups. In the top 10 with Steely Dan, Marvin Gaye, Coltrane, The Jam & Curtis Mayfield

  • Cafe Blue, now, that was quite an album!

  • I prefer this version coz Dee's on it and Steve Whites drumming is amazing as usual. This is the Style Council at their best

  • Micky boy, Nicht with the vocals son!!!

Mick's up, Mick's company, are the nuts though geezer :-)

  • This is a decent version but the acoustic version is amazing...It was originally available on the Money go round 12".

  • This is the best version. I am biased as I had a girlfriend who was the spit of DC Lee. Weller is God's second son. Steve White looks like he should still be at school.

  • At the risk of sounding like a mutual appreciation society, I have to agree with the two previous posters, the version on "Introducing The Style Council" is far better, a very good c.d. if you're interested, I bought the vinyl as a 17 year-old in 1983, happy days.

  • I agree with sanityinspector, the original EP (live in studio) version was a classic, acoustic Weller, and as good as he is today. All subsequent versions were just to "glossy". I played that EP to death Xmas 83, and it still works when I can be bothered to get the turntable out. Weller is still the man.

  • I loved the EP version of this song, used to play it when I was a college radio dj. This version? Meh. The horns and the female vocals just get in the way, IMO. Thanks for posting, though; it's a nice memory anyway.

  • effin brilliant!!!!

  • whow one of my fav songs thanks for posting!

  • mick i forgive you for singing, the rest was great

  • here i am at 2.30 am listening to this-taking me back in time-what drugs>??????

  • I would love to have that Rickenbacker guitar. It is an extremely rare model here in the U.S.

  • yeh that's steve white.

  • Is that Steve White on drums? They don't show him close up...

  • The whole thing gave me chills. So cool to see them "playing" it. I must've listened, sung along with that song like 10,000 times.

  • pls. take me back to the 80`s

  • Not a good Vid - In the top 5 Wellers songs written ever

  • KIDS T.V. IN THE 70s/80s IN THE U.K. WAS INCREDIBLY DIVERSE..YOU WOULD GET APPEARANCES BY BANDS WHO WOULD HAVE STRUGGLED TO GET FIVE MINUTES AT MIDNIGHT COME THE MEDIA INTEGRATED NINETIES..

REMEMBER POP KIDS..TAKE THAT ONLY "BROKE" AFTER ANDY PETERS, THE O-ZONE ET AL PLAYED(and proBABLY FUCKED)THEM TO DEATH...

NOT THAT SUCH TRIVIALITIES ARE RELEVANT HERE..

  • What is this from? Is it a music video, or from a TV show?

  • It's from BBC Saturday Superstore

  • According to Wikipedia, that was a children's TV show from 1982-1987. What a cool song for a kid's show! Anyway, it's my favorite Style Council song, so thank you, thank you, thank you for posting it!
