  • So...I guess it's good afterall that Peter is played by a woman...can you imagine a man trying to do this scene?!

  • A woman pretending to be a boy pretending to be a woman...my head asplode

  • this reminds me of bugs bunny and elmer fudd

  • Mary Martin's voice is pure gold. Luv it!

  • Oooooohh!!

Thank you for putting up this version, it brings back sooo many good memories :)

  • What I love most is that he can't even see the "lady's" face, and he assumes she's beautiful. Later, in the song, he grabs the veil and keeps saying "Take off your veil, and let me see your face". Man, if a veil is all it takes to convince Hook a young boy is a beautiful woman, he hasn't seen a lady in a good long time! XD

  • Haha I love Hook's voice when he says "It's a lady!" XD

  • Anyone notice the Indian on the scooter? XD

  • 1:33 The best part is when Captain Hook gets kicked in the butt, while he's bent over. lol

  • Mary Martin looks so beautiful!!!

  • This just reminds me of Buggs and Fudd!

  • Hook: Oh.... its you. Well.... this is kind of acward, isn't it! Men, KILL HIM AND NEVER SPEAK OF THIS AGAIN!

  • so many fun songs in this movie!!

  • He plays a flute with his hook. What a BADASS!

  • I thought this scene was so funny when I was a kid ... now it looks so perverted! XD An actress in drag playing a little boy in drag, passing himself off as a grown woman and seducing a flamboyant pirate who likes to get beat up ... this is too good. X3

  • @BadMagz This has to be the gayest scene in the entire movie; that is if we forget for a moment that Peter Pan is being played by a woman ;)

  • 1:36...hook just creamed

  • Captain Hook- Slave to the rhythm!

  • 1:24 - 1:36 I always laughed SO hard at that part, Hook was so stupid! 2:31 - 3:35 LOVE this part!

  • Wow, I love Cyril Ritchard but he's even more talented than I thought if he can play the flute with a hook on!

  • "It's a BEAUTIFUL LADY!!!!!!!!" No....it's Peter Pan with a shawl over "his" head lol

  • Poor sexually depraved pirates.

  • @JesterNlove You can tell coz they're not all covered with syphillis sores.

  • Wow. As everyone has said, it is so great to see this again. Grew up watching this each year until they stopped showing it every year. It is so good to actually see people singing and not lip-syncing to a recorded version. Man, Mary Martin had some voice.

And to all of you who analyze it, give us a break. IT'S JUST A CHILDREN'S STORY OF FANTASY!!!!!

  • @Leeislonely those who analyze peter pan are "Grown Ups" who will never truely understand Neverland!!! ... I wont grow up, I wont I wont!

  • @lilyflower58 I second that.

  • This part is so legit.

  • Cyril Ritchard was involved with the Metropolitan Opera. He play in La Perichole. I never heard it, but I wonder if this song was for Cyril Ritchard.

  • Wtf the indians had a scooter?

  • @nordygirl0823 I know. I thought the exact same thing.

  • @nordygirl0823 HAHAHA!

  • In this scene you can see that Mary Martin was capable of singing in a very operatic voice.

  • Hook's Song

  • this Captain Hook wuz pretty Damn Wicked.

  • "It's a lady." Hook figured it out before I did as a kid

  • @Drunkenprophet23 haha that made me laugh so hard when he said its a lady. :P

  • One tambourine to rule them all

  • what a voice! :)

if peter pan is a dude and hook thinks it's a beautiful lady... one would question hook's sexuality :P

  • goddamn this is a perverse play. the eternal child figure seduces the father figure whom he has already castrated in order to subject him to further humiliation in face of his own sexual inadequacy. christ

  • @SinetheGuy I always saw it as like a Bugs Bunny trick. The boy pretends to be a lady in a not very good disguise, but the man is gullible enough to think it's a real lady. If Bugs Bunny gets away with it every time, then Peter Pan can do it too. That's the way I always thought of it when I was younger.

  • @SinetheGuy lol oedipus has nothing on this story if you put it that way

  • @SinetheGuy I'm pretty sure none of those things resonated with me at 5. You see SinetheGuy, you're just too grown up.

  • the beauty behind this is no matter how old you get its still a wonderful production

  • best part ever!!!

  • oh my goodness!!! hook is like 60 and he is jist running. XD

  • oh dear! iz she teasing

    hooky?

  • o no! the indians have scooters! run away, run away!!!!

  • the indians would have scooters...

  • Ah yes, it is a well known fact that pirates simply cannot resist a catchy beat on the ol' tambourine! XD

Anybody else notice Cyril noticing and then quicky adjusting his slipped sleeve at 1:38?

  • Mary Martin might be 47 in this, but Hook is 63. Look at him go!

  • I was so mad they cut this from the Cathy Rigby version, but I can understand. Peter Pan should be played by someone who can belt AND have a good soprano extension to do this scene. Mary Martin kicked ass because she had BOTH!

  • This is my favorite part!

Take off that veil, and let me see your face...

Why hide your beauty beneathe that ton of lace?

  • this was always my favorite part :P

  • This scene was sadly cut from the Cathy Rigby version. It's too bad because it's a funny and charming sequence.

  • i love how the indians randomly have scooters.

  • oh my mysteeeerious laaaady, what is your naaaame?

  • I still have this movie on vhs in my closet. I use to watch it all the time.

  • Comment removed

  • This movie is amazing!!

I too remember why I watched it everyday when I was little... on VHS!!

  • @tevster1316 SAME HERE omg lolololololol

  • "Its a laaaady!"

  • I just love her voice!!

  • i remember loving this part when peter is dressed up as a lady.. yet it confuses me now.. i never noticed it before but peter is a boy.. yet hook thinks he's a lady, not even a girl but a lady..

its even more confusing cause peter is being played by a lady.... aye aye .. spins the mind some

  • You know Cyril Ritchard was into opera. Also, the part with the dancing, reminds me of a Russian or gypsy dance.

  • naeva17.... duh! everyone knows all you need is a tambourine... and you will see the crime rate decrease dramatically... hahaha

  • when in fear of capture, merely grab a tambourine and turn the chase into a dance number...now why didn't i ever think of that???

  • Hahahahaha i agree. lol

  • @naeva17 I can give you two reasons:

    First, it don't work!

    And two, IT'S STUPID

  • @naeva17 brilliant!

  • Cyril Ritchard cracks me up :)

  • lol at the indians on the scooters.

  • Oh, Hook, I often feel like love kicks me in the butt, too.

  • So she's a woman... playing a man... pretending to be a woman. Interesting.

  • I love how Hook has fallen love a way. How the he/she keeps tampting him.

  • sounds very Victor/Victoria

  • jajaja I was just thinking that! :)

  • @queenmalka Victor Victoria, much? :D

  • @queenmalka lol Kind of like "Victor Victoria" - played be Julie Andrews

  • @oolalaification I LOVE THAT MOVIE

  • @queenmalka This is where they got the idea for The Jerry Springer Show LOL

  • @queenmalka you are reading too much into it!

  • @dramamajor1985 Wahhh wahhh.

  • hahahahaha

  • @queenmalka you need to see "VIctor, Victoria"!!

  • @queenmalka think shes a little confused?

  • @queenmalka haha yeah your right! That's so funny!! :D

  • @queenmalka she's a grown woman pretending to be a little boy pretending to be a grown woman to seduce a pirate...very interesting

  • @LoveAlwaysHopes100

Its a girl inside a boy, inside a cloth! Better than Turducken. hehe

  • @queenmalka Can you say: Gender Bender!

  • @queenmalka sounds a lot like the movie Victor, Victoria. HA

  • @queenmalka I'm a dude, playin' a dude, disquised as another dude!

  • @queenmalka

    Very Victor/Victoria, is it not?

  • @queenmalka total Victor/Victoria moment here! :)

  • This movie made me gay, no joke.

  • this explains a lot...

  • You would never know she could sing like that if you didn't follow her career.

    LOVE this scene!

  • WTF SCOOTERS Awesome

  • The look on his face when she kicked him in the rear and the noise he made still cracks me up :)

  • I can't get enough of that myself. That leaves me in stitches and makes me die of laughter ROFLMFAO

  • a girl pretending to be a boy pretending to be a girl....

  • Maybe this is where the idea for Victor Victoria came from...

  • Wow, it's just like Shakespeare! :)

  • There's a similarity to"certain" Bugs Bunny cartoons!

  • I love this version, always have, thank you so much for posting this whole thing. This in particular was my favorite song of the entire show.

  • ME TOO nd it still is after 8 years

  • this made me laugh was i was six, it still does at 54 :-)

  • "Misericordia!"

  • It's a magic tambourine that makes them dance!

  • it's a LADY!! :D

    lol

  • I didn't know Mary Martin could sing that high.

  • This is the best bit!!!

As a kid I did have a little crush on the Captain..yeah, weird but there you are

  • Ha ha... it's ok so did I.

My mom still picks on me about it anytime someone mentions Peter Pan.

  • don't worry i used to tell my parents that peter pan (the disney version) came to my window at night.

  • Nostalgia overload. I still remember ever word. :)

  • Cyril Ritchard why i cant i find any pics of him as captain?

  • i can c his package captain hooks.

and i thought the pirate in stripped pants was hot when i was little.

captain hook wants peter pan who is a girl.

  • the best part!

  • as a kid, this scene used to confuse the shit out of me.

    i loved it regardless:)

  • I a woman playing the role of a boy impersonating a 'beautiful, mysterious' lady

  • LOL

  • indians on scooters.... now I've seen everything! LOL great memories

  • omg memories!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 2:57 i love how captain hook dances

  • la la la la la la!! hahaha great memories!!

  • My favorite part of PETER PAN. Mary gets to really use her voice (in a kind of operatic mode) and she sounds fantastic! The "Hungarian" undertones of the music made me chuckle too. Even a tambourine! Inspired madness by wonderful performers. Thanks for sharing.

  • 1:53 LMAO

  • my school is doing this version of Peter Pan and at the beginning when Peter is doing the opera voice kinda thing the dude playin Captain Hook was "no way am I doin that" and the teachers said no that's peter's part and he said "oh". it was really funny. and me and my best friend/ twin are the twins in da play.

  • It really IS a mysterious lady, posing as a boy posing as a lady. Yikes.

  • llaa laadadaareedeee llaaaaalleeeyyaaaaa...I love when she sings :D

  • And where did the club come from? LOL

  • LOL the noise he makes when he gets kicked in the butt.

  • Don't forget about his facial expression when it happens. It's just priceless and they both leave me in stitches.

  • HAHA! ok 3 things... #1 where did that tambourine come from? #2 why are the indians on scooters? lol and #3 this was one of my favorite parts in the movie! :D

  • this was my favorite, no...the end was...

  • where did she get that tambourine!?!?

  • Comment removed

  • hahaha this made me laugh SO hard the other day... i hadn't seen it since i was like seven. it is so ridiculous!

  • What's funny is that Cyril Richards appeared opposite Hans Conried in Rankin/Bass' "The Hobbit" (1977) as Elron and Thorin, respectively. Both Richards and Conried played Mr. Darling/Captain Hook, the latter in the Disney version.

  • i like how the movie is broken up =]

  • OMG LOL!!!!

  • i am peteroan

  • hehe "whats your secret?" "la la la la la la" "tell your secret" "la la la la la la" "speak oh speak oh speak i prey" BEST part of the whole song!

  • i am peterpan

  • cool ur good actor

  • Cyril Ritchard a great human being a great actor!

  • it always bothered me when Hook had to adjust his hook in this sceen due to his sleeve creeping up. funny that THAT is what bothered me as a child, not the fact that peter was a woman. i wanted to be peter. :/

  • Hahahaha this makes me laugh every time i see it

  • THAT'S why a woman has to play Peter. A male could never hit those notes.

  • OMG This is my absolute favorite song of the whole entire film.

  • i ADORE this song x

  • this was a little strange, classisc, but strange. it's a girl acting as a boy who is pretending to be a girl :-l

  • Victor/Victoria?!?! lol :-)

  • They sure don't make classics like this anymore :(

  • A lady pretending to be a boy acting as a woman!! Oy fey!!

  • you mean "oy vey".....

  • lady-/lay-dee/n. (pl. -ies) a woman regarded as being of superior social status or as having the refined manners associated with this (cf. GENTLEMAN).

    Dictionary Definition of Lady

  • I'm peter in our schools version and this is one of my favorite songs to do!^^

  • i could be peter because I can sing all of those notes

  • i am auditiong to be wendy

  • good luck!

  • good luck, ^_^

  • Oh I love this bit of the musical! And I had the urge to listen to it recently, but was afraid I couldn't (vcr broken and tape is back in my parent's place). But now I can listen to it, so I thank you very much!

  • why are they riding scooters?!?!

  • Because they can! =)

  • YA! becaz they can!

  • it's better not to ask questions, lol

  • is anyone else incredibly disturbed by this scene now as an adult? i can't help it, but i still adore it!

  • I agree It's weird. I love Cyril Ritchard's Accent

  • Oh, I know! It's such a bugs bunny moment. Or maybe victor/victoria, given that its a woman playing boy playing a woman.

  • Oh, I know! There's something so Bugz Bunny about this scene. Or maybe Victor-Victoria given that its a woman playing aboy playing a woman.

  • XDDDD This song is the reason its been my dream to play Hook! Ever since I started acting!

  • I can't believe how long it took me to realize that was a woman not until my early teens

  • haha. same here, well actually it took me until i was about 10 - but i still felt pretty dumb when i found out.

  • Really? I noticed almost instantly when I first saw it at the age of 7 or so...

  • Never could bring myself to watch the Robin WIlliams version. Maybe I'll buckle up in the future

  • love this song!

  • Cyril Ritchard:Gay or just British? LOL! He is good but Hans Conreid from the cartoon is the bomb!.In The fifties Boris Karloff(Frankenstein,The Grinch)Played Hook for a season on Broadway.Wish I could have seen that!
