In Norway we have to pay a license to the government to have a TV. It's called NRK-lisensen. It is about 375 USD per year.

In the US they call those cable companies, who promote American propaganda more than Hollywood does.

Except in the US were talking about at least $75 a month without internet. Most people get a Package deal with their cable providers including both internet and cable for about $100 a month.

So here in the US it's $1200 a year for basic cable and slow broadband (2 mb/s) internet.

Personally I would take more channels like PBS over FOX or CNN anyday.

@THE1CALLEDJ We have cable companies here too. But you have to pay the license fee in addition to your cable subscription. It does not matter if you watch the government channel or not. You have to give your name and address when you buy the TV in the store, then you will get a bill in the mail each year. They also have NRK-inspectors that goes around to try to find people that have TVs and don't pay. They can come to your door, and then they try to listen if they hear a TV in the background.

All that have been discussed by the politicians, but currently the government has decided that you don't need it for those. I know there is some gray area, TVs with possibility of connecting a computer that has a remote you would have to pay. For computer screens you don't have to pay, I suppose as long as they don't have an antenna plug or cable TV plug directly in them.

You have to buy cable subscription in addition. They also have inspectors that try to catch people that try to watch TV without paying. We actually have to pay to get propaganda. There have been some talk that computers also have to have this license since you can watch TV with your computer, but that has not happened yet.
