Its a testing time for the world economy and its a real test of the value of democracy. The economic plight of the world today is far deeper and will take far longer than the political cycle. Can a government really implement long term, sustainabe policies if they had only 4 or 5 yrs to achieve it? Here lies the dichotomy. Populist policies or a strong visionary leadership that can help the country weather the storm and adapt to the changing environment?
Unfortunately in a free market environment, money can and is often used be a gauge of success. Is that the mark of a successful private sector individual? Of course, it will be shameful for him to accept more than SGD500k becasue if he couldnt earn more in the private sector, he obviously doesnt deserve to be paid more in the public sector, We need aspirational leadership regardless of party and platform. In the private sector where the playing field is level and there is no holds barred in reaching the top, I question if he made his mark in a positive way. He claims he made SGD500K in the private sector and is comfortable with that level of income. I question the aspirational value of that comment.
TJS couldnt cut it in the private sector. His resume doesnt reflect an individual with vision, talent management or superior leadership. He is definetly intelligent but he seems to have a huge chip on his shoulder and would be great speaker at Hyde Park Corner on Sunday afternoons to point out the faults of any government but I would hesitate to imagine him running a country.

Dr Tan Cheng Bok is the best bet for Singapore's economy with his international directorships not only in Singapore. I didn't know that he has an international portfolio. Excellent one too. He is def strong. When he was 16, his father died and the unions refused to compensate his father's death. They lied that his father had not paid for 2 months. Only at 16, he stood up to them till they paid in the end.
Because of dr tan, singaporeans have free parking on sunday and public holidays, we are able to use cpf to pay our school fees, more

I think Tan Jee Say is being to dramatic.. Singapore should not have a president that is so hot-headed. Also, though he promises to donate so much money should he be voted as president, this does not mean he has the ability to govern our country well. @mutant81 If you listened to his answer, he did mention the OSA - which means he can't discuss how the ISA is invoked, and that it is used for the most dire situations. The ISA title is self-explantory, and if going by how it was invoked in the past, presents a situation whereby if info was leaked, there may have been harsh consequences, not just politically but for society. Globally, there could have been conflicts with Rome.

Its a testing time for the world economy and its a real test of the value of democracy. The economic plight of the world today is far deeper and will take far longer than the political cycle. Can a government really implement long term, sustainabe policies if they had only 4 or 5 yrs to achieve it? Here lies the dichotomy. Populist policies or a strong visionary leadership that can help the country weather the storm and adapt to the changing environment?

TJS couldnt cut it in the private sector. His resume doesnt reflect an individual with vision, talent management or superior leadership. He is definetly intelligent but he seems to have a huge chip on his shoulder and would be great speaker at Hyde Park Corner on Sunday afternoons to point out the faults of any government but I would hesitate to imagine him running a country.

I think Tan Jee Say is being to dramatic.. Singapore should not have a president that is so hot-headed. Also, though he promises to donate so much money should he be voted as president, this does not mean he has the ability to govern our country well. Yup I read in newspapers that dr tan cheng bock was an orphan and at 16, he dared to stand up against them and demand compensation for his father's death. He is definitely strong & independent. I'm voting for Dr Tcb. A vid clip recalled his days as a 16 yr old orphan standing his ground to fight against dishonest big unions who withheld his deceased father's compensation. They lied to say tht his father didn't pay arrears when he did (a mth b4 he died). Dr Tan struggled w sch work, caring for his family of 7 (incl him) n giving tuition. Presidents Wee Kim Wee, Ong Teng Cheong, Benjamin Sheares and Yusof Ishak.
They had what a president is made of. THEY had the abovementioned qualities. In return, the people gave them HONOUR, LOVE & RESPECT.

Nah... TJS has no class. He can't handle his temper. He looks like he's suffering from inferiority complex. As a President you must be able to handle all criticisms thrown at you and keep mum about it. If your English language and understanding is a problem - fix it. First foremost, fix your pronunciation learn to roll your 'r's. It is TERRORISM NOT TELLOLISM.

Tan Jee Say is PASSIONATE, as can be seen from the video. He is not afraid to say "NO, don't interrupt me", "NO, let me continue", when opposed. This is exactly the type of President we need against a very hostile aggressive govt. If he is timid, he cannot check and balance this HOSTILE govt, and CHECK AND BALANCE IS THE **MAIN** JOB OF THE ELECTED PRESIDENT, as evident in parliamentary proceedings when lky changed it from appointed to elected.

@mutant81 If you listened to his answer, he did mention the OSA - which means he can't discuss how the ISA is invoked, and that it is used for the most dire situations. The ISA title is self-explantory, and if going by how it was invoked in the past, presents a situation whereby if info was leaked, there may have been harsh consequences, not just politically but for society. Globally, there could have been conflicts with Rome.

notice TT didnt even answer in point to the question. instead he tells us that terrorism is a "fact of life". and keeps insisting on that. thanks for stating the obvious. the only time he said anything about ISA is.. well, sorry cannot say, its covered under the official secrets act. this is what my view of a president should be; on the ball, have the instincts to stand up for his beliefs, have the courage to speak of issues that are hard to swallow and "taboo". I have just seen that in TJS.

Tan Kin Lian is more detail, clear minded of what he wants to do, innovative & correct in the approach. There is a clear difference between vote buying, & clear disagreement statement about president salary by setting an example of donating amount in excess of fair amount to charity or giving a comment like no comment.

agreed that TT should not have interrupted TJS since TT's talktime is over.agreed that TJS should've maintained and controlled his cool,calm & composure instead of raising his voice at TT.but let;s anaylze why he kinda blew his top for a while there. he was PASSIONATE abt the whole ISA thing.at the back of his mind he was thinking abt the unfair treatments dished out to the ex-detainees.how would we feel if we're jailed without justification and accussed of being something that we're not?

do you guys notice that the way PAP candidates speak, is all of the same composure? smile, laugh sarcastically, making a point with vicious eye contact, blunt persuasiveness? whilst any non-PAP candidate in either GE or PE will speak with confidence and assertiveness?
