  • man man man!!!! that guys were almost crasy ..(very brave) one mistake or mecanic failure ,you are a dead man.Today the pilots dont need to be fear or they even dont know what is fear. But for me, the old pilots are the best ,becouse they know what is fear ,and they ran pretty close of the limit.Today pilots are like the Virtual simulation pilots, almost no risk.

  • Arnoux is driving the car and they didn't use the turbo until 1977 at brands hatch

  • Renault had many problems with their new turbo engines in the 70´s.

Lack of good fuel among others got to detonation and cracked/melted pistons

Just look how much balls these guys had... Insane...

  • The power of a Veyron with an engine the size of the dump I took the other day

  • i grew up in this era,it proved to be the most exiting, now they need to get rid of all downforce in my opinion, and just focus on mechanical grip

  • what's the power ?

  • @boilingpoint2 they had up to 1400hp ;) (using the turbo)

  • @kcaltman

The problem wasn't the boost, but rather how not to make the mixture self detonate and control the combustion. Back in the late 70's that was quite a challenge.

BMW used 5,6 bars of pressure (don't know how much psi that is) in qualifying rounds in the Brabham-BMW, which reportedly had over 1400hp from a 1,5 litre 4 cylinder. BMW used some illegal fuel additive and octane booster which had been developed during WW2 when Germany had problems manafacturing it for their airplanes.

  • @McLarenMercedes Lack of good fuel and cooling among others would give any turbo engine a hard time....

    Did they try water/alcohol inject?

  • @McLarenMercedes 1 bar of boost equals 14.7 psi which is atmospheric pressure. So 5 to 6 bar is about 75-90 psi boost ( rounding up to 15 psi / bar ), combine that with the nasty fuel cocktail and a crazy driver with the red mist in his eyes is pure racing enjoyment.

  • the yellow teapot.

  • turbo engine sound it's better than a woman's orgasm

  • this is not 1976. More likely between 1980-83

  • when he uses heel and toe to brake, the revs are very high. Using this technique, did the drivers have to drop 2 or more gears in one shift ??

  • @doubts Arnoux and Prost almost always did single rev downshifts where they would skip gears. One big rev as you move down 2 or 3 gears. Worked fine if you had the patience to wait a split second longer to downshift in your braking zone. Doing too early would lock up the rears.

Arnoux was quick, but a bit of a hack. No fear though!

  • Nope it has to be either 81 or 82 because their is another onboard from lap of the gods in monaco where the car looks just the same and it's the Renault RE30.

  • @AlanMcB It's friday or saturday practice for the 1982 Canadian Grand Prix, 100% sure.

  • @lazerpod66 Yeah you're probably right.

  • The date is wrong, as already pointed out it's most likely 1978.

  • anyone know what max boost pressure on one of these cars was?

  • @danthemanpatrick 8,500,000psi

  • @Bloodsteri667 oh, yeah, okay. I was thinking right there around 8.5 or maybe 9 million lbs/in^2. Hopefully in 2013, when they're apparently going to start using turbo four bangers, they'll really crank that boost.

  • @danthemanpatrick well at the moment i have my garret gt4000 in my two bugatti veyrons tuned down to like 5,000,000psi so the power is availible to the public

  • Sounds like a proper race car. Bring back the turbo era.

  • amazing sound!!!!!

  • great video! I could watch it all day!

  • wow just think of the the balls it takes to drive one handed shifting with the other at 200 mph he must have stolen one of lance armstrongs

  • That car pulls hard at nearly any rpm in any gear. Must be a real handfull to drive.

  • Only a real man could drive one of them!

  • Can't be 1976 , Montréal was introduced to the F1 caleendar in 1978 ..... and the turbos were there in 77 :P am just sayin , nice video though .

  • When did they first start using power steering in F1?

  • Please bring turbos back and this old layout would be nice as well

  • @arturcraft2 In 2013 turbos are making a comeback to F1...with KERS too!

  • @azmanntoz

it's not certain yet but if happens it will be great

  • Rene Arnoux at the wheel. Incredible stuff. Search out Arnoux vs Villeneuve French Grand Prix if you want to see one of the greatest battles in F1 History

  • To think that he was changing the gears manually while wrestling with the car also with steel brakes

  • Either way, this guy deserved some serious Pussy

  • This is 1979, not 1976. As stated earlier 1977 was the first year for renault turbo f1cars. and this is not the first incarnation of their car this is a RS11 driven by Rene Arnoux

  • @wermach123 No, it's not 79, it's 1982. And the turbo was introduced in 1977, know your facts dude.

  • I doubt I could pull one of these out of the garage without losing it.... I'm talking failure before second gear lol.

  • This wasn't 1977. This was 1978,1979 because in 1977 the canadian gp was in mosport park... This is montreal!!!

  • This is 1982.

  • This was 1977 there were no Turbos before this year

  • In 1982

    DFV had about 530 bhp

    Turbos about 600 bhp

The cars was lighter back then , not much, but about 570 kg

  • Or even more in qualifying boost(I mean the spead)!

  • j'adore les couleur funky

  • vere auto

  • Questo circuito e' quello di Montreal,Canada.

    Fantastico..

  • The old steampot.

And the first Turbo-Renault was one of the slower cars because of the Turbo-gap.

  • Did the cars back then take into account the size of balls these drivers must have had ?

  • And don't forget that they were built with complex aluminium, only the McLaren was using Carbon, and the pedals were forward of the front wheels, literally in the nosecone, so what happens when you have a head on collision???

  • The driver would earn a trip to the nearest hospital, if not worse!

  • we know what happens we were there ( the fans ) in 1982 FOR THE # 27

  • @biowax

Yes, there was a special hole in the seat to keep the center of gravity low.

  • @sanarkhos Ofcourse. That explains the sparks from beneath the f1 cars (steel vs concrete)

  • spettacolo!

  • Una maquina maravillosa.

  • I couldnt recognize Canada track!!! The finish line was in the slow corner?! There were no main straight and he pass the Champions walls chicane very open, not as near the wall as nowadays!!!

  • They changed the start/finish line in 1988.

  • No, he's homosexual.

  • no game this is from the vid "lap of the gods"

  • What type of brakes did they use back then?

  • They used steel brakes. Carbon fiber was a novelty back then, only McLaren were using it since 1981.

  • this thing sounds pretty awesome

  • Misshift at 1:10??

Pity the Renaults were so unreliable in 82. They probably could have won the world championship!

  • Arnoux was a very rough but quick driver. You never see Prost mist a shift like Arnoux, but they were 2 great drivers on that team in 81 and 82.

  • Its Rene Arnoux in his RS10 of 1982!

  • WTF? Renault wasn't in F1 in 1976.

  • Right

  • its in 1979

  • It's 1982, don't make a fool of yourself ChristianBlumentopf

  • ahh the good old days when drivers had to actually let go of the steering wheel to down shift and match engine speed with their foot and the gas pedal, not a micro-chip and a laptop lol...

  • Arnoux drove for Renault among 1979 and 1982, and Renault joined f1 in 1977. Anyway Montreal joined F1 in 1978. So it's IMPOSSIBLE that this video was 1976's.

  • As I said before, it's during friday or saturday morning practice for the Canadian GP in 1982.

  • nahh dude that the brake's

  • It's not the brakes that sound weird but air! It's blowing through the dump valve exit as you release the throttle (turbo pushes air towards a closed butterfly, so the air pression increases and works back against the turbo spin; to avoid this, a dump valve allows the air to quit the conduct between the turbo and the butterfly, and the turbo to keep its high spinning).

  • The sqeal is actually the brakes. In 82, they still used steel brakes.

  • @lazerpod66

    1400 horsepower and steel brakes....

  • @socialspasmdrums Not in 1982, they were about 650hp.

  • @lazerpod66

I hope the 2012 Indy Car engines sound like the on board Renault Turbo.

  • I think there is a mistake here! this is not a 1976 vid. i think it is from 1977-78 and rene arnoux is on the wheel! I am not sure although! (for the date!!!!)

  • Gordini V6 debuted at silverstone in 77, with Jean-Pierre Jabouille at the wheel.

  • This video is during friday morning practice for the 1982 Canadian GP.

  • anyone knows if these turbos were really faster than the modern f1 cars? i just wonder because lap times in general used to be slower than today.

  • because the cars today have better aerodynamics the laptimes are faster. but the cras in those days had more hp so they might be faster on a long straight.

  • actually these cars had better aerodynamics because of the ground effect they were using back then! they were much heavier and the tracks were slower than modern day tracks! and they were more difficult to drive! Schumi tried in 2001 the 1979 ferrari and he said "i would never drive in that thing! I do not know how they did it!"

  • Who is that? Great vid and killer driving.

  • that`s the old start and finish at montreal now is`nt it?

  • old canada circuit.great circuit,v fast.

  • This is 1982.

  • It's definitely not 1976 thats for sure! Renault didn't even race their turbo F1 car until 1977..

  • Yes, I remember those days when F1 was interesting and the man with the biggest nuts won! Although the performance figures are similar to modern technology, the turbo F1's were outragous!

  • What a scarrying brake sound!!!

  • The fact of life without carbon brakes. It would be another two years before carbon was used for the brakes in Formula One.

  • damn he's fast!!

  • What a great sound.

Who cares what year.. The only thing that matters is the year in wich the bastards banned the turbos..

  • some unhealthy sounding brakes there.

  • yeah, and some very healthy lookin balls on the driver! Sheesh, hes fast, and brave! i wish f1 was back to how it used to be!

  • yeah they're all clones now.

  • sure are.

  • amazing for 25+ years ago...beauftiful

  • wanna race?

  • !!!RENAULT RULES THE WORLD!!!

  • Sorry guys, i've got a feeling it's 1982. This is footage from the video 'Lap of the Gods'(part 2).

  • All I know is the file name on my PC says '76, but you know how reliable that is ;-).

  • Yeah, definetly not 76. Probably 79 more than likely.

  • I think this is 1979! Good vid none less but I'm sure it's 1979 as Arnoux is driving and Renault didn't join as a team till 1977.
