  • I wasn't that impressed with his opening solo. It sounded to me like he was playing the same riffs over and over. I thought he sounded a lot better when he slowed down and played jazzier.

  • Is there a DVD of this? Or atleast better video quallity.

  • yep: As seen on the Official Ritchie Blackmore FB Page :O)

  • As seen on the Official Ritchie Blackmore FB Page

  • Ritchie's guitar has never made a sound he didn't intend for it to make.

  • Blackmor its layend, my favourite... so grat!

  • Sort of unusual dry, no reverb or echo.Brilliant and original as usual!

  • no one played like this in the early 70s

  • it,s a fender telecaster...only guitar richie thought was good enough for this stuff . though if you listen to his classic work it was amazing

  • 3:39 that's called cooperation. that's called band.

  • His playing is a lot more interesting here than most of his solos I've listened to.

  • What other guitarist can go flawlessly from hard rock to jazz, classical, country and blues in the one piece, to then finish with the national anthem. I listened to this piece for years (though not this version) and wondered why he bothered to do the trill for so long. It wasn't until I saw this clip that I discovered its a visual joke. Incidentally this is available on the Deep Purple History and Highlights DVD. If you like Blackmore, get it.

  • which guitar does he use in this video?

  • after listening to the child in time solo, i didn't think ritchie could play anything better than that......., i was wrong

  • fantastic

  • For its time this is just incredible. The clarity in his tone is what gets you. To play with that articulation and volume is no easy feat. He makes it look like he is in total control... and he is.

  • @tatsandteles I agree :O)

  • Nice, Blackmore the magician!

  • The Best Guitarist of history ......

  • he was the sole reason why i picked up the instrument

  • Thank you mr. Blackmore, you´re the greatest guitar player ever!

  • Ritchie Blackmore is God

  • What always impressed me about Blackmore is that he played very inventively, but through a very simple setup - not a lot of effects, just a bit of over-driven amp and lots of creativity and energy in his solos. His lead work was always very exciting, a highlight of the tune. Here he at times reminds me of Alvin Lee. One of the great rock guitarists, no doubt!

  • RITCHIE ROCKS LIKE FEW EVER DO

  • Awesome Blackmore!

  • Blackmore is the very very best!

  • Ritchie Blackmore: my favorite guitarist of all time! I saw him 5 times live: twice with Rainbow (1982 & 1983), twice with Deep Purple (1985 & 1991), and once with Blackmore's Night (2004) :O)

  • alas my love you dio me wrong to cast me off discoureosly hhahahahah

  • @Fluffywascal39 I loooove the typo--intentional? "dio" (as in Ronnie James Dio) instead of "did"...? :)

  • this is typical of blackmore hes playing a guitar normally ment for blues or jazz and starts shredding on it he was way ahead of his time its just a shame hes hardly ever on the tv anymore its always pop stars who cant even play an instrument who always get the fame its wrong

  • Ritchie Blackmore is awesome!!

  • hey 10jimmypage, clapton DOES NOT go in front of peter green. PETER GREEN IS GOD. along with blackmore, and allman

  • @pinto4646

yes, i agree.. with all the respect to great ritchie, i just feel peter green's music closer to my soul.. by the way doesn't your nickname go from a song called proud pinto?)

  • This is killer man.Where didi tis come from.I'am also a big fan of Ritchie an Deep Purple.I have never seen a video this good with him playing the Gibson instead of the Strat.Very cool.

  • Wow, what a kickass video.

  • Satriani is fast and accurate but evokes ZERO emotion in the listener. He's not in the top 20. In no particular order: Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Eric Johnson, Brian May, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Steve Hackett, Slash, Dave Navarro and throw Leo Kottke in there on the acoustic.

  • @MiRaleigh What Satriani's solos evokes ZERO emotion????? I have to disagree.

I am not a Satriani fan. I have only listened to ony 6 to 9 songs. But he is a superb "Feel" player. Listen to "If I Could Fly"... A superb emotional solo.

  • Now then....what about Dave Mustaine? He has the skills.

  • The last time I saw Dave, he was playing at the Stone Club with Metallica. What is he up to today? just kiddin---yeah, he's great in his own little way

  • Ritchie is the best, along with Page, at making great rock songs and playing great rock guitar. How many great rock riffs has he created? probably more on one album than most have done in their career. Which album? pick one, Deep Purple or Rainbow, it doesn't matter

  • Blackmore is the best! He's like Jeff Beck: one note and you know it's him

  • My opinion is: 1. Jimi Hendrix 2. Jani Liimatainen 3. Steve Vai 4. John Petrucci 5. Paul Gilbert 6. Joe Satriani 7. Eric Clapton 8. Toni Iommi 9. Santana 10. Angus Young I know its not going to be everyone's favorite idea but its just how I see the top ten guitarists of all time in my eyes. I love every single one of these players and one day wish to be as good as them.
  • @WerecatKarlec

some great guitarists in that list, but i would at least have Ritchie blackmore in there... maybe Mark Knopfler

  • True. But it is a bit to hard to be able to decide who the top ten players are in my opinion. I love to many guitarists to be able to make up my mind

  • did you forget Rory Gallagher?

  • Don't take offence it's just personal preference 1. hendrix 2. blackmore 3. jeff beck 4. alvin lee 5. jimi page 6. martin barre 7. peter green 8. eric clapton 9. mick box 10. kossof There are some performances that stick in mind, including blackmore's solo/'concerto for group and orchestra', clapton's 66' bluesbreakers album with john mayall, peter green/first fleetwood mac album, alvin lee's live versions of 'i'm going home', paul kossof/isle of wight 69' and mick box /debut uriah album...
  • what note does he play at 1:18?

it makes my dog go mad!

  • Richie Blackmore is an all time great. Check out Michael Romeo's videos on youtube.

  • 1.Richtie Blackmore/ Jimmy Page

    2. Eric Clapton

    3.Jimi Hendrix

    4.Toni Iommi

    5.Alvin lee

    6.Jeff Beck

    7.David Gilmour

    8.Santana

    9.Yngwie Malmesteen

    10.Peter Green

  • A Top Ten list without JOE SATRIANI is ludicrous.

Jimmy Page was a sloppy guitartist live, I don't know if he was drunk/ high when he played or what but he never imressed me much.

  • The last 10+ years have revised the notion of Page as a sloppy and/ or inferior live player. Based on the 1976 movie "The Song Remains The Same", guilty as charged. Based off the 1997 BBC recordings, the live dvd, and "How The West Was Won", innocent. Page is no Blackmore but he was still great and in my top 10

  • I have to disagree, Joe Satriani is all about speed. Jimmy might be sloppy, but when you listen to him play it feels like your taking a trip to another universe. You just dont get that feeling when you listen to Joe Satriani

  • I agree---Satriani is great but leaves me cold. he is nowhere near as important to music history as Jimmy Page.

  • It's not just speed it's precision, accurate and AWESOME!

I think Jimmy took too many "trips". lol

  • yes, but there's more to life and music than shredding and precision-life isn't a perfect script. Jimmy has taken millions on many "trips" :O)

  • @10JimmyPage only Hendrix can take someone to another universe

  • its a gibson es 345....like ricky deringer use to use...and alvin lee...

  • alvin lee was before blackmore in the shredding dept..

  • . .says ,"The speed of Yngwie . ." well, Yngwie said that he got his initial inspiration from Ritchie Blackmore. .

  • lol--I'm talking about ME :)

  • . . Oh, I know .. I caught that; I was just commenting on how alot of people discount Ritchie and other 'old-school' guitarists in favor of this 'shredding' thiong. I was pointin' out how the 'shredders' looked to the 'old school' . . lol

  • unreaal

  • Every person has their own preferences and favorites. For me, this man is hands-down THE BEST guitarist in the world! :) :) :)

  • @neir654 Totally agree. Ritchie is the king, and right behind him and vastly underrated are Mark Reale, Ronnie Montrose, Criss Oliva, and I might throw Pat Traverse in there too.

  • he's maybe not the best but his my best

  • I'm a fan, but he's way better than I thought he was. Is he the original "shredder" ? Cuz nobody was doing that shit at the time this was filmed. No blues box sloppy joe here--- and some humor thrown in as well. Great.

  • and he comply how to use that semi hollow jazz guitar....

  • Nobody at the time? - Who's being playing like this since? - I struggle to find anyone who shreds 'with feeling' like Blackis does.

  • Ritchie used that Gibson ( I cant remember the model ) Untill he seen Hendrix live and wanted a strat, He got one off Eric Claptons roadie.

  • Ritchie without Strat looks so weird.

  • no guitar player gets national and international recognition without being exceptional as all Name players are!

    what's your Name???

  • Touche!

  • What?!?! No Strat?

  • From roughly 1956 to 1968, Ritchie didnt play a Strat. It didn't become his full-time model until late 1970

  • Blackmore is an awesome guitarist who can be boring and self indulent soloist that cant even be compared to Hendrix who single handedly changed the way people played and thought about the guitar . I saw him with Rainbow in 82 and was very dissappointed by his solo part of the show

  • I saw Ritchie 5 times live between 1982-2004 and he was awesome. I DO think he sounded a tad bored with his own playing in the 1979-1984 period (pre DP reunion)

  • Its U boring, he still make amazing riffs in B.Night, Hendrix never made a melody - was fast but wasn't a compositor

  • both hendrix and blackmore are gods with the guitar, but jimmy page is also one of the greatest ever

  • Don`t forget Tony Iommi!!!!! He`s the real Riffmaster and he sounds great over the years!!!!

  • i like hendrix a ton, but no human bein can compare to blackmore an his many styles, hendrix used a lotta noise an was great, but never ever can no one come near blackmore, im 54 done it all heard them all for many years,,now if someone would pay me,,haha,,blackmore is the best,,see manny charlton from,,nazareth,,hes 66 an still wailin away, a killer guitarist too,,,

  • This was blackmore circa 1970/71, he would have been around 25/26 years old.

Hendrix, died at 28, and yes he was head and shoulders above all, even ritchie is quoted as being a big, big fan.

Nowadays blackmore plies his trade via another route, but is still is musically proficient enough to tower over many of his ilk.

  • Yup, great gutiarist. You've only got to see this vid to see that or see him live. But Henrix was the man. He could do this in his sleep, and probably did! Pity about the dross at 3.45 and 5.55 too. Used to wish he'd just get on with it at his gigs and stop putting these classical touches in which, to be honest, were just bloody annoying! Same with Jon Lord. Henrix 1, Blackmore no.2 in my opinon. There you go.

  • 1.Hendrix 2.Zappa 3.Blackmore 4.Townshend

  • around 3:45 you hear foreshadow of all this medieval shit he's doin' now ..

  • it's fucking brilliant.

  • Personally i think Ian gillan secretly wants Blackers back in the fold.......maybe one day they will bury the hatchet, hopefully not in each other !!!

  • i wish blackmore and gillan could get together for a jam or two before they get too old.. both of them are getting up there and years and it would be such a shame to not see them together one more time.. hopefully with Mr. Lord also

  • I want to see Rod Evans come back, too

  • Will never happenput it this way i can see John Lennon and George Harrison coming back from the dead for a Beatles reunion first

  • Hendrix*

  • before fender stratocaster use

  • simultaneous with the ES335

  • Why, oh why did he ditch this to play bloody 'hey-nonny-no' crap with Blackmore's Knight? I had the honour of seeing him live a number of times - and meeting him. Weird bloke - but untouchable as a guitarist. The best ever. Lord would be back to Purple in a flash if Blackmore re-joined. Mind you, then we would lose Gillan again!

  • Haven't you ever noticed, the better the guitarist the stranger the person?

  • King of the Kings!!

  • esta loco es el mejor es la base de los que hoy se dicen buenos sin dudas ...

  • STEVE WHO?!

  • Wow this is so excellent thanks for posting this

  • yeh great stuff

  • brilliant!

  • This is the best thing i have ever heard. ritchie is the king of guitar-playing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Solo of deep purple child in time by ted's, my favorite music, ritchie blackmore a monster of rock ! talent ! deep purple forever ! and i went the 20 march at rouen to see my bands ! so ... good ! i want that this band stay please !! ^^ its so... godband, talent, unbelievable !!

  • I love the way he gets that tone, it's ALL BLACKMORE!! that's what's so wonderful about him. I just watched a few shred vids this morning, and although I wont name names to avoid arguments and slander, I cant tell one from the other. But just a few seconds of this great English master, and you know who it is instantly. Thanks for posting this. It is the man who made me want to be a rock guitarist....Fuggin glorious video!!

  • This clip just made my day perfect.

  • He BETTER be your favorite guitarist or else LOL. He is a million times better than Eddie "make noise" Van Halen

  • A truer statement has never beenmade. Cheers !!!......Blackmore for life !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "is very good"

  • fuking brilliant. 500 stars

  • YEA! Agree!

  • guys, ritchie is in my opinion, the best guitarist ever to grace this planet!!! even hendrix said "theres only one white guy that can play guitar" cmon dudes, while malmsteen, vai, halen and satch use shit loads of effects. this man dont need em!!!

  • Fucking AMAZING

  • I agree :O)

  • Get the new Purple DVD filled with Mk 1-3 stuff - highly recommended by a fan since the late 60s "Hush" days

  • Got it--it's awesome!

  • I recommend the new Purple DVD with all the Mk 1-3 stuff on it

  • I agree!

  • This guy is the man, people just do not get it.

  • Oh, millions do get it, pal! Ritchie has many, many, many fans. Overseas, Deep Purple are accorded the same respect as Zeppelin and Sabbath...only in America (these days) does Ritchie seem to be on the "b list"

  • You are correct, people do get it overseas.

  • In America:

    Jimi Hendrix is the King,

BB King, Albert King and Leslie West are Princes, among others.

    In England:

Jeff Beck and Ritchie Blackmore are Kings (there was more than one king in England in the early days),

Jimmy Page, Albert Lee, Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Tony Iommi, and Kim Simmonds are Princes, among others.

Dave Edmunds is the King of Wales.

    All imho, of course.

  • The first time I heard Deep Purple or perhaps felt Deep Purple is a better way to describe the experience it was the mid-70s. I was 8, and Ritchie Blackmores sinewy, sinister riffing on the Made In Japan version of Child In Time, coupled with Ian Gillans dramatic, gorgeous howling, Jon Lords ominous neo-classical Hammond organ, and the dynamic interplay of the Roger Glover-Ian Paice rhythm section, tore the top of my head off.

  • When he is on, RB is a killer.

  • i am sure that when jimmi page hear this stuff for first time he said "how is he doing this...oh i miss that...omg i cant catch him dam you richie slow down"XD

  • Way ahead of his time, Ritchie rules, he is a mad bastad thou!!

  • 我好喜欢Ritchie Blackmore,上次激憤原來他來过Canada在97年表演过,同Rainbow樂隊,希望他和Candice Night 再来Canada(Toronto)表演,現在他已經64歲,唔知他幾時再來Toronto

  • That was great....my vote is still his solo on Rainbows live version of Mistreated

  • where did you getthis video??

  • It is now available on 2 dvds :O)

  • Where do you find them?

  • amazon

  • thanks for posting!

whats the name of the dvd? i think i'm gonna buy it.

  • history, hits, and highlights

  • すでに。

  • AWESOME

  • Who gives a crap about scales, just enjoy the music ffs

  • I'm surprised to see him playing a Gibson ES-335 rather than a Fender Strat!

  • Ritchie used this guitar prominently from approx. 1963-1970; strats crept in from1968 onward.

  • yeah , me too , but it will be after when Eric Clapton will sell him a Strat , then he will fall in love with fender and start to play strats and teles

  • this was after clapton sold him the strat. clapton sold him his first strat when he was just a kid.

  • no, when blackmore was a kid he played with classic guitar, after (like in 1966), clapton sold him a strat , but he could not play. It will take a little bit of time to play with only strat (and tele in the studios)

  • when i say kid i meant a teenager.haha

but if you watch the song mandrake root from this exact same show you can see ritchie playing a strat so he was playing them by this time.

  • so weird to see him with a gibson :P awesome solo!!

  • whoooa, so young, so talented.. great musician, i really appreciate and admire his work, especially with candice, they're a perfect match :)

  • Blackmore is technically better than Page, but Page's Stairway to Heaven solo in TSRTS blows all the guitarist away, except Hendrix and Gilmour.

  • The wildest i have seen by him is on Wring that neck, Live Bilzen Jazz festival..it's right here on youtube and its sick

  • wooow briliant solo

    well done richi !!!

  • In my opinition his wildest solo is Kill the king from On Stage, 1978. He really killed

    somebody that night)

  • which scales does he use?

  • Is called the "Ritchie Blackmore Scale"

  • and the snake charmer scale

  • He fuses 2 scales together from what I'm hearing, the G scale, and E minor...

  • G minor?

  • No normal G scale... But remember... at the beginning (start) he was playing the notes D and C... That couldn't make you think of any scales... And hardly belongs in the G scale or E minor scale, but they do appear in the scale, but it just wouldn't make you think of these scales... But adding all the notes together that he played, my saying is that he added the 2 scales together... Because I haven't seen a scale that contained bot G and E minor...

  • but what I wasn't talking about was in the intro... At 2:13 everyone is playing A.. But it's a special A scale, not sure about the name, but it's Arabic... Then after he plays on the Blues A scale... During this (with Arabic or Blues) you could just play the A chord to it... At the intro, it's too difficult to play the E minor chord and G chord to it, but it's possible, and it's mostly the G chord you're playing... I can continue for the whole solo, lol!

  • I can say the scaleS what he plays during classical part.. lol But no....

  • very cool! Like so many other guitarists, I became briefly infatuated with Yngwie and all the speed demons and technique crazy demons. When the smoke clears (pun intended), Blackmore is the best for phrasing, feel, songwriting, influence, stage charisma, and longevity.

  • Everyone has their own love of music!

I mean for Rock, my idol is Jimmy Page, for Jazz, my idol is Pat Metheny (Wow! Check him out)... And my list goes on... Jazz, Blues, Classical, Rock, Metal (black metal, no), Rock And Roll, Boogie, Arabic, Folk (not country) and etc... I don't like country, only some songs of it. But overall I don't like it. Al techniques are all difficult at their own level, just love it! I mean my musicality is wide! And I love, everybody should learn the theory of music.

  • Very true (and you have good taste, too). I love many guitarists/ styles of music, but Blackmore is my favorite. As for the rest, to quote President Harry Truman: "It is what you've learned after you know it all that really counts." In other words: theory/ technique has its place, but, ultimately, it's what you do with it/ musicality. Look at Santana and Hendrix-hardly theory experts, yet incredible.

  • I know... Santana, I mean, I'm not sure, I think he might have heard a little bit about theory, because what we learn is that in a minor song the perfect final chord to end the song is a major chord, but I think Santana figured that out by his own, or that he just had the music in him, and the theory was already in his conscience of music... It's hard to explain... But theory helps out.

  • AMAZING.

  • INSANE!

  • Its not the wildest ever of him, but its wild.

  • Thats just insanity!

  • Better than anything Jimmy Page or Jimi Hendrix ever did! Ritchie Blackmore is sooooooo over looking and criminally underrated! He is the rock guitar god of the 1970s.

  • INDEED, that's what I keep telling :D !!!

  • the man who inspired Yngwie Malmsteen can only be a God

  • Good player

  • Deep Purple > whatever band you like

  • what if i like deep purple ;)

  • Deep Purple and Pink Floyd > whatever other band,

    though there are many greats

  • yeah you are right those too top everything!

I am a big Pink Floyd fan too!!

  • And you have one of my favorite guitars in your username :D

  • Led Zeppelin.

  • Honestly, can Page do THAT? Nope :P Can LZ be as lively? Nope, even though I like them anyway.

  • Yes,.. Page can do this and more (though not as jazzy as this)

Check out Heartbreaker solos in live concerts.

  • I just love the Jazz part so much!
