Being married and having sex with a woman does not mean you're heterosexual, or even bisexual. Humans do things they don't want to to get benefits all the time.
How do we know that the cowboy was not the one who tied them up? Riding back days later and seeing one still alive, he cuts her lose and decides on a new torture for her? Without more, you can conclude that.
