The breakaway activates the trailer brakes if it comes off the truck to keep it from rolling off. It doesn't free the truck from the trailer.

If you have an 8' bed wouldnt you want the sliding 5th wheel instead of the solid mount one? that way if your rv has a shorter neck then say a flat bed you have you could adjust it?
