I don't think this is as depressing as people are letting themselves be conned into believing. When the current backdrop is Lady Gaga, push button hip-hop and other assembly-line modes of 'music', rather than be considered beautiful, music like thist gets an ugly stigma like 'depressing' far too often, despite it's originality and beauty-now THAT'S depressing
@TheoRetisch Yeah, MTV is rubbish these days. Has been for about 15 years now. I use to be able to stay up all night and watch videos like this as well as popular stuff. Not anymore.
I had never heard of this band. I was reading about Annie Hall on wikipedia (because of the Cracked article about how it was actually a murder mystery at first) and totally didn't know that the 'home' that Alvy lives in as a kid, under the Thunderbolt rollercoaster at Coney Island, was actually a real residence. Then I clicked on the article about that and saw that it was used for the photo for their "Rollercoaster" album. Took a chance... wow.. wtf, how have I missed this band?!
This is the best fucking band in the whole entire world ever and Mark Kozelek and Sun kil moon. I can't believe how awesome it is. Makes me jizz ten fold.
@bacardi119 i found nothing that really get closer to RHP. However...i also do like Slowdive, Idaho, Great Lake Swimmers...and a spanish band called Los Planetas (i got to RHP throught them)
Watching this video got me into RHPs/Mark Kozelek. I saw it for the first time in '94. At that time everyone was listening to Nirvana, The Pixies, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins etc ..... and here was a band making slow, beautiful melodies with heartfelt lyrics - it blew me away.
been a fan since their first release down colorful hill in 92. if you ever get a chance to see and hear mark kozelek live, do it. i saw red house painters live , once. they hardly toured the east coast as full band. it was a privilege. the most underrated singer song writer of our time.
@Entidus you have no idea how lucky you are. if it weren't for michael jackson on that tape in that old tape player back when i was around 10, i would probably be everything i 'm against right now. then it was iron maiden, pink floyd, led zeppelin, doors etc.. now it's the extremest of metal, prog rock, classical, post rock, even drum n bass (quality material).
i was also born in '91 btw. i just had to discover this goodness myself, heh.
fun fact is i found out about RHP through Katatonia :D
when you google for the video, you´ll get to the 4AD site featuring this clip. i only know this version as well but it was labelled as "long version".

I am from Germany - and in the good old days (early 90s) - this video was played on MTV in our country.
And when i saw it then, I bought the album a few days later and become a fan of RHP.
Today I dont listen to MTV anymore - their musical views and quality had changed.
