  • sounds totally different from outside.

  • damn, that alternator is huge!!!

  • I thought the air compressor would be a shite load bigger than that. Why is there a Qld Rail sticker on the wall?

  • @bolts1111 I don't know why the sticker is there. It was a PN loco........maybe somebody being or attempting to be funny.

  • Search for this video on youtube: Loco 66542 cold start attempt 3

It has the silencer removed!!! Always wanted to know what they sounded like unsilenced :)

  • @ZetanCrisp Pretty much like an SD40 or one of our old Victorian GT26C C class units.

  • @NewJerseyBill...

Hey thanks for the reply, I think it's a fascinating piece of engineering. Even tho I understand engines these beasts have made me realise how little I really understood, fascinating. I'd love to see a diagram of the internals, anybody know of some diagrams on the interweb...?

  • @mckerraljamie Took me all of 5 seconds but YT will not allow a link in this box so just search EMD 567 engine and you will find one. The bigger engines are basically the same but......bigger as in 654 or 710 cubic inches per cylinder

  • thanks for video that is really cool I enjoyed it thanks for the tour of the EMD!

  • Question for you? Is the low drone Whoop Whoop Whoop the noise from the turbo gearing that is on EMD engines to combat turbo lag? Or is it the shaft running between the crank and the generator, nobody seems to know..........?

  • @mckerraljamie You can include me in the nobody seems to know section.

  • @mckerraljamie its both the fuel explosion in the cylinder along with the airflow (intake and exhaust) through the cylinder airbox ports. These engines are big enough to be able to pick out various individual cylinders if you have good ears. At idle, the injector for the cylinder is firing 4-5 times per second.

  • @dodgeramb59 With EMD,s, air in through the cylinder ports and out through the 4 valves in each head.

  • @mckerraljamie Turbos on EMD,s are actually superchargers at idle. they have a gear train and one way clutch for scavenging air at idle. The sound you hear is actually one cylinder getting more fuel than the others and momentarily putting more load on the turbo drive gears.

  • hey thanks for adding annotations it helps a lot

    nice vid!

  • What class is that?

  • @DounutCereal G class

  • @Rocketboy1950 Thanks. They sound pretty good on the inside too!

  • thanks... interesting.

  • g class? it had a fairly sharp exhaust note but a N/G cab. 2 locos wich have a smooth note

  • badass!

  • Try pulling the lay shaft very hard:D

  • OK so now I have done that and it has gone very quiet in here. Now what do I do.

  • Ahh... the sounds of silence. I don't want to be around to pick up the pieces had he done it the opposite way....

  • The overspeed trip would have saved the day if I had been silly enough to lean on the layshaft

  • I have been in there @ notch 8.

  • So have I. We're both idiots.

  • @Rocketboy1950 another idiot here..... I did have earmuffs though.... like that helps any under full load.

  • ha ha ha

  • wow they must have some serious sound deadening material in the cab. It's so quiet compared to the engine room directly behind.

  • We all suffered from industrial deafness in the early days. Management had to be dragged kicking and screaming to soundproof those cabs but we forced the issue. I can still remember when the brake valves exhausted in to the cab. That was the most ear piercing noise you can imagine.

  • Be in there @ notch 8 under a full load, and see how deaf you get. :-)

  • Been there, done that. In the good old days we used to just wander through. The only thing that concerned me was a crank case explosion or a rod coming through the side. And yes I have significant hearing loss as a result.

  • Ive done it and made a video of it. Couldnt stand it without ear protection though Lol!

    Its prety f*****g loud !

  • how amazing that sound!

  • that's one sexy engine

  • how big is the turbo in that train?? u had zoomed in to far to see the hole thing.

plz reply about info ion the turbo. :)

  • Define "how big". In terms of physical size/dimensions/boost. Maybe somebody can give you an accurate answer. I just drive the things.

  • 645 turbos weigh in at around 2000-2300 lbs. Rotor alone is 40 lbs and spins up to 18k RPM at full load while producing 17-21lbs nominal Airbox pressure. Saw the results of a failure where the rotor blew out the housing, tore out the carbody doors, bent the handrails flat 90 degrees and was found 100yds into a cornfield.

  • @dodgeramb59 Are you for real? Thats a bit over a tonne! It only looks to be the size of a carton of beer?

  • @bolts1111 laughing, yes its real. Changed out a couple in my locomotive mechanic days. Not sure how big your case of beer is... but a standard US 12 pack will fit through the exhaust inlet side of the turbocharger.

Crankshaft alone is 3 to 4 tons depending on how many cylinders the prime mover has. That usually blows peoples minds more than the 1 ton turbocharger. :)

  • 0:25 turbocharger :)

  • 0:48, those are actually drain cocks to insure there's no water in the cylinder before starting.

Yes, EMD's sound constantly boringly nice, but I'll take an Alco or BR Class 50 anyday.

  • Hooray for creep cranking, saves running around cracking them all open pre start up. I must admit to a strong liking for the old ALCO's but it's hard to beat the sound of EMD's.

  • Ying, ying, ying? thats more of a 710 engine, Wiki says Class 66 has a 12N-710

This one sounds like a EMD 16-645E3B or 645F3B used on the U.S SD50's.

  • sounds exactly like the class 66, 67, 59 in england. Realy annoys you because when your trying to film somthing and theres one of those nearby that the only thing you hear in you video, that bloody contant ying ying ying ying but it sounds pretty good when its full throttling

  • im sure its a chinese man inside YING YING

  • rofl

  • it sounds almost like a valenta, but i know it isn't, do you have any of a valenta engine?

  • No Valentas down under as far as I know. We have the XPT's in NSW which came with them but I think ( could be wrong ) that they have been re engined with something else.

  • yeah the XPT's have VP185's now

  • agggh noooo its a bloody class 66! ying ying ying ying ying ying AGGGGHHH NOOOOO!

  • HELL YEA!! cool. video ROCKET BOY.. thank's

  • Diesel forever!!!!

  • This engine sounds just just like our 66's (british loco) not a sound I love to be honest, take the silencer off and it may sound ok

  • Is this a G Class?

Had a drive of one of those.

    Ace piece of kit

  • Fantastic video! I love the sound of turbocharged EMD's. I wouldve loved to hear it go all the way up to run 8 from inside the engine room but i guess you would have probably gone deaf then!

  • that turbo is ohhhh...haha. how many pounds of boost is it pushing out? just curious.

  • Last time I read any stats about these Turbo's:

They are mechanically assisted, so they create boost from the get go via a shaft & gear system from the crank, and flow around 800P.S.I and then some.

  • they are driven by engine crank via spring loaded turbo drive gear until it reaches proper RPM and exhaust pressure. Then it is driven only by exhaust pressure. It is really a turbo and supercharger in one. They really are a cool engine.

  • Cheers for that =). It's always good when people get together and combine their knowledge about such things =)

  • you are right gear driven to 80 percent then a sprag clutch disengages therefore making it a true turbo I worked as a mechanic rebuilding these monsters 645's, 710's

28000 rpm, weight over 3000 pounds, the turbine and compressor wheel alone weigh 125lbs awesome turbos

  • It sounds similar a spanish 333.incredible!!

  • North America, Europe, Australia, anywhere. The EMD 645 always sounds best.

  • wonderful sounding machine

  • Nice clear video mate!

Sounds quite alot like our GM built Class 66 here in the UK. If only Vauxhall vans sounded like those engines too!

  • It should sound like a 66, the 66 is based on that unit albeit minus a dynamic brake I believe.

  • I'm pretty sure that's a 16 cylinder you got there (bit hard counting the cylinder covers), I know the UK 66s are 12 cylinder, 710 series engines (710 cubic inch per cylinder). I believe the 16/645s are about the same HP (around 3300) as the 12/710s which are later technology with electronic fuel injection etc.

The new SD 70s they've just bought in the Pilbara are 16/710 series EMDs, about 4500 HP a guy that drives one told me.

I'm no expert, so correct me if I'm wrong.

  • 16/645s are 3,000 hp. Your engineer friend is correct. Late model SD70s have 4,300 hp with the 16/710 built to EPA's stupid Tier II emissions regulations.

  • @gm16v149 You're correct, the UK 66's are 12 cylinder, the EMD 16 cylinder engine in the video is the same as the UK 59's.

  • In response to comments re not being able to hear me and as a result of the new service available I have added annotations.

  • ok that sounds cool the G sounds good im into models i have a HO brass N class i am geting sound put in to it hope it sounds like the real one

  • are you into model trains

  • absolutely not, spend enough time on real ones

  • so do you work PN

  • NO !

  • was it a PN G class

  • yep

  • Sounds very similar to an Irish Rail 071 class. Well it is the same engine. :)

  • QR sticker on engine at 54 sec in to the movie have good look hey? still it sounds great i spend 8 years in a shit engine room with B&W M.A.N engines so i love the sound of diesels

  • That may well look like a QR sticker but I can assure you it was a PN loco on Victorian broad gauge.

  • the emd engine is an art in railtraction.

  • QR by the looks of it

  • Nope, PN but absolutely no difference.

  • Can't beat the sound of a GM engine!

  • sounds kinda like a class 66...

  • And just where do you think the design of the 66 came from ? :-) This one's better, it has a dynamic brake.

  • so its the turbo that makes EMDs YING?

  • love that whistle baby!

  • good old vline g class nothing beats em

  • what class of loco is that rocketboy

  • That was in a G class

  • ruston v16 and that engine sound alot alike

  • make one with subtitles, i only caught little snippets of your voice. Its a mammoth engine eh? Imagine being in the walkway there while the engine's at full throttle

  • The class 57`s(ex class 47)have this power unit, why they changed the Sulzer for one of these i`ll never know.

  • Simple they wanted reliabity, fuel economy and access to cheap spares.

  • Looked and sounded more like a 710 than a 645.

  • I imagine you mean the three cylinder one which is the air compressor.

  • hey whats that littel engine at the end of the large one? very awsome video

  • Back to job look work 645 567 710 EMD scooter

  • Excellent sounds. I love it when you touch the layshaft and she revs a bit. Here in the states we gotta open a whole lotta doors to see all this good detail.

Your recorder apparently has an excellent sound system! What brand & model is it?

  • Nice video. The turbocharger is massive and sounds great! Please post more videos with the engine under load if you can. :)

  • you need to find a way to add subtitles or something so we can hear you a bit better

  • you need to find a way to add subtitles or something so we can hear you a bit better

You're right, I do. This is all pretty new to me, still got learner plates on.
