  • @shampoo2 yes, you dont lift bars in reality, and no people wouldnt bench press crates. Weightlifting is a sport utilizing bars and weight discs for safety and simplicity. Whose gonna lift rocks in a gym and find various weights. That said i feel kinda bad for cavemen bulking up mustve sucked back inthe stoneage

  • thankyou for the advice..

  • Good job and all but can I just ask a question what is the big deal with deadlifts when the bar comes off the floor pretty good amount.Yes I agree its the most functional workout in the gym but to say its natural I disagree to a point being that when you lift something off the ground its almost always flat and you have to squat more lower .For some reason deadlifts just seem like a short range of motion. To me rock or boulder lifting is wear more strength and power is and its more full range

  • ;/ I think i'll stay away from deadlifts. Too scared i'll bust my back.

  • I am a firm beliver in guiding the bar with my legs

  • I did exercise 2 months and i improved myself. Is there anyone can say that how can i find working program?

  • I take weightlifting class as of now in high school and we max deadlift every week, do you have any tips for really being ready for this?

  • @ZapsterJJ

I would never recommend that you max out every week. Even top powerlifters will cycle their training and only max out every 2-3 months. Most of your time should be spent on building strength, not testing it.

  • @ZapsterJJ

I'm a beginner and I'm on a program where I deadlift one set for 5 reps every 4 or 5 days. I set a new max every workout. My 5rmax has gone from 115 to 210 in 5 weeks. My advice is to eat a lot and gain weight.

  • I like the thick stocky build, how tall are you and what do you weigh? check out my videos and see if my form's alright, any feedback would be appreciated:)

  • @cedarfallslifting

I'm 5'6 and weigh about 220 in the off season and I'll diet down to 195 for competition.

  • Grandad was gunna steal ur bar lee

  • thanks man

  • Oh btw...Nirvana - In Bloom. Background music. Nice %)

  • so, basically, in the conventional variation the plates are NOT touching the floor, right?

That`s news to me-thanks for the tip!

  • @cMaXeJIJIo

No, you can touch the plates with each rep if you like. The width of the stance determines the style of deadlift (i.e. close stance is conventional, wide stance is sumo).

  • STEVO!

  • i woulda loled so hard if that old guy at 2:00 just yelled out LIGHT WEIGHT BABY and starting repping that out haha.

  • i have a question. if u were going to say ooh i max deadlift 500 for example. does it matter if its sumo or regular? wud it still count as a max out deadlift

  • @Insanitiii455

Either style is acceptable in competition, it's just personal preference.

  • its called a deadlift because you are ment to put the weight on the ground and lift it from dead weight.... you dont put it back on the ground you just keep lifting it

  • 2:00, aren't u even gonna buy a guy a drink?

  • is the deadlift supposed to work the back or legs more? because i deadlifted up to 245 yesterday and I feel it in my lower back more than anything else

  • one can do more weight using the sumo variation...it's much easier overall. i prefer the conventional it's much tougher

  • @livfreediempty

It depends on the individual, some people are stronger with conventional deadlifts. Just go t a powerlifting meet and you'll see lifters using both types of deadlifts.

  • Your shins have to be close to the bar!!!

  • Hayward's taylored (Y)

  • nirvana playing in the background :)

  • this is against what jhonnie jackson saying about the bar position

have a look at the video

  • thanks man, really helpful

  • Hey so @ 1:19 your feet are waaaaaay to wide, you need to check that because that may tear up your other muscles, such as hamstrings etc... just a suggestion you need to check that out man, i'd reference other videos on here

  • hands are wrong, and u should touch it to the ground for full extension, esp with a low ass weight like that

  • 2:01 mr mendelbaum walks thru

  • lmao 1 plate!1!!!

  • 1:52 that's the grandpa showedup :D

  • Thanks for another great video coach hayward. I have a question, what if I have a mild case of lordosis? Should I continue heavy deadlifting? Also, will deadlift stunt your growth? Thanks!

  • @graven101 Ask a doctor, not a stranger on youtube. I repeat, don't seek medical advice from strangers on the internet.

  • Im 15. Weigh 145. And stiffleg deadlift 325. If that normal? I also bench 225 for 7 reps. I squat 225 also. Please someone tell me if im doing well. I dont have many people to compare to where i live

  • @Dericelas You're 15, weigh 145 and you bench press the bar with two 45's on both sides? That barely seems normal. You're still developing and you should probably chill out. That or you're full of shit. But to answer your question you're doing well, but you're probably stunting your growth.

  • @BallSnatchers

He is not stunting his growth by lifting, that myth is just stupid. He should though, make sure he has good form and doesn't snap shit up, which at his young age can be even worse.

  • @Dericelas very nice lifts, dude just keep doing what your doing. those numbers will continue to go up and you have a shit load of time to be a beast.

  • @Dericelas very nice lifts, dude just keep doing what your doing. those numbers will continue to go up and you have a shit load of time to be a beast.

  • @Dericelas benching 100kg at 15 thats fucking mad!!

  • whats the difference between variation in the technique as far as muscles worked goes? like why would you do a sumo deadlift instead of the standard?

  • @ndubb100

The same muscles get worked, but just with different positions. Some guys are stronger with sumo, some are stronger with conventional, you have to try both and see what works best for you.

  • steve-o on roids !

  • do you breath in or out when going back down for the deadlift?

  • @MrLivetoCompete (do you breath in or out when going back down for the deadlift?): You breathe in. It gets to feel quite natural to breathe out when you are lifting, and in when you return.

  • @MrLivetoCompete

Generally you breath out when lifting and breath in when lowering.

  • Is this considered a compound exercise?

  • @000Winter000 (Is this considered a compound exercise?): Yes, it does not just focus on one muscle/group.

  • @000Winter000

Yes, the deadlift is a compound exercise.

  • I noticed today that i can't do that "arch" in the back .... GOD ... I would give my left ball just to be able to do this srsly !!

  • man your shoes in this vid are hilarious. you should definitely get some under armour ones

  • deadlifting while listening to Nirvana is always recommended!

  • What up with the 10 on the side?

  • I don't think I would play Nirvana in a gym as a working out song

  • Thanks I've never mixed in dead lifts because of my form, I can definitely tell I'm doing them right, now.

  • whenever i need to learn how to do something correctly weight lifting wise i search the exercise followed by leemhayward. thanks again mate

  • Are you canadian?

  • so, ive heard alot about why you shouldnt lift with your back instead lift with your legs but to me that seems like defeatin the purpose of being a "back" excercise, what would you advise, concentrate on lifting with my back or use my legs more? thanks

  • @ampa4president

When you do the exercise right you'll feel it working right through your back, hips, glutes, and legs.

  • @ampa4president lol what the that wasnt a good answer on his behalf. you should be doing the movement with your hips while keeping your back stiff. The movement will be in your hips, knees and ankles. By keeping your back stiff and straight it strengthens your spinal erectors. Your spinal erectors are there to keep your back stable not to bend and flex. Also it works your traps near the top of the lift. Concentrate on the movement in your hips and keeping your back rigid.

  • @ampa4president it's a core exercise, does everything. this is what makes you stronger and makes you lift more on the isolation exercises.

  • NIRVANA

  • i hear nirvana in the background.

  • Hahahaha old man comes in video like he bout to show u how to deadlift at his age XD

  • Those calves are impressive.

  • 'In Bloom' by Nirvana is playing in the backround, wish my gym played some fucking good tunes once in a while.

  • i have a bad back that can get sore really easyly if i mess up lifting anything more than maybe 30 or 40 pounds. any tips on how to get around that? ...besides lifting 29 pounds :P

  • This is most certainly not proper deadlift form.

  • how many sets/reps should you do?

  • @TheDannytheman12

It really depends on the program you are following and what you are training for. But generally deadlifts work better with multiple sets of lower reps. I actually have a video that covers some suggested rep ranges for all exercises, just search for "How Many Reps Should You Do To Build Muscle?" to see my video.

  • @leemhayward what does that help you with

  • I want to work out at this gym, they're playing nirvana!

  • how do you know that you are doing it with the proper form?

  • @01coyote13

The best thing to do is video yourself so you can see your lifting from the 3rd person perspective.

  • So what is this, a back or a leg workout?

  • @hoopz2598

The deadlift could be used with both a leg or back workout. The major muscles used are the spinal erectors, hips, glutes, and hamstrings.

  • @leemhayward when we lift for football my coach says on deadlift your suppose to get 90 degrees(knees)

  • You're not supposed to rest the bar on the floor between lifts?

  • Great video. Thank you!

  • a muscular steva O

  • nirvana song playing in the background. HELL YEAH

  • You have to put the weight back on the ground with every rep.. Hence the term DEADlift..

U shouldn't be learning people how to do bad deadlifts.

  • @rooztube u shouldnt be "teaching" people bad english either lol

  • @Randcom Well I'm sorry. I can express myself pretty well in 4 languages, what about you? ;)

  • Your videos have helped me a lot thanks!

  • I am Commander Shepard,

and this is my favorite gym on the Citadel.

  • Are you an endomprph? my bodytype look similar to yours especially my calf which retains a lot of water.

Hope to get a responde from you thx :)

  • When you do the dead lift you do most of the lifting with your arms or legs do you just pull up with your arms or whats going on there????????

  • Super helpful video. Thanks.

  • he is doing too fast

  • Thank bro, really helped

  • @ leemhayward When ever I do deadlifts the back of my hip on my left side justed druing the lower back hurts...my max is 330 ... are my hips riseing to fast that iam stiff legging it or idk... plz help :(

  • @seaweeds102 you are very welcome lol :p

  • you never mentioned to bring your hips and butt out. that's very important. i suppose you forgot because you've been a professional trainer for a long time.

  • It looks like Steve-O doing deadlift :))

  • @seaweeds102 ....yeah u r right..he is very alike....hahaha...nice catch...

  • the guy wearing the cutoff tshirt in the background never does an exercise. He just walks back and fortht the whole video lol

  • I'm 13, 203lbs of SOLID, DRUG-FREE STRENGTH and I can straight bar deadlift 700lbs RAW and STRICT with DIAMOND perfect form, no straps, no suit, NOTHING!

  • @AndyHarglesis post a video or it didn't happen

  • @AndyHarglesis

I'm 7 years old, 233lbs of SOLID, DRUG-FREE STRENGHT and I can straight bar deadlift 850lbs RAW and STRICT with DIAMOND perfect form, no straps, no suit, NOTHING!

  • @Livenderrr

lol ok kid go back to call of duty and stop dreaming

  • @Livenderrr

I´m 7 years old, 233lbs of SOLID, MUSCLE-FREE FAT and i can eat T-Bone steaks 850lbs RAW and SPICED with DIAMOND quality spices, no knife, no forks, NOTHING!

  • When ever I do deadlifts my back hurts...

  • @sabrefan173

When you get pain it's usually from either poor form, a weak back, or both. My advice is to lighten up the weight and get your form down pat. Then gradually build back up in weight by increasing the weights by 5 pounds per week.

  • @sabrefan173 i have the exact same issue, and my form has been called impeccable.. i think its just a crap back =[

  • @sabrefan173 yeah your weight is prob to mush.. so get comfortable first and with form. then work your way back up. i had the same problem and this tip worked well for me.

  • Some people have their hands between their legs instead of outside, can you speak to the difference? I would guess it forces a wider stance which hits glutes more but that's a shot in the dark

  • @Ivereadaboutit

Everyone is built differently, as you get more experienced you'll find your own personal groove where you feel the strongest. Me personally I'm stronger at conventional deadlifts than sumo, but some others maybe just the opposite.

  • thumbs up for nirvana playing in the backround

  • @599kj no one thumbed up ha ha ha

  • I wanted to see your form from the side angle, damit.. I look in the mirror and see my self from the front all the time..

  • Hey Lee, just another quick question if you don't mind answering. Does it matter if my back is more 'upright' as opposed to being at the 'right angle' position. I've been experimenting with both ways, but just wondered whether one is safer. Both feel comfortable. Hope that makes sense. Thanks :)

  • How much should a 15 year old BEGINNER deadlift an how many reps?

  • @Austendude2 Depends.

  • @Austendude2

google starting strength my friend. Also do as much weight as you can for 5 reps with good form

  • put the weight down when youre deadlifting for christs sake...

  • stop doing deadlifts for a moment and go show the kid behind you how to use that machine.

  • the ber?

  • sweet converses

  • which of the dead lifts is recommended for someone with knee problems?

  • @eironmyrholzen

Make sure to not lock out your knees!

  • Is it normal to have my lower back aching as I do it? I'm trying the sumo deadlifts, keeping my back straight, chest out, head up etc... I only started doing deadlifts and I'm feeling aches on my lower back, and neck so I'm wondering whether this is normal or a sign I'm not doing it 100% properly.

  • @PanterA1984

When you just start off it's normal to feel muscles working differently. But just keep your weights light and build up gradually. The more you do deadlifts the more you'll find your natural groove and your form will improve.

  • @leemhayward Yeah I'm starting off light. I found them easier to do the second time I did them, and my back ached much less post workout [and the next day], which is a good sign. Thanks Lee!

  • @leemhayward Does the Deadlift hit your abs directly and can It give you great arm strength?

  • nice shoes man. i always work out in converse all stars too

  • WTF! Steve O doing tutorial vids on YT?!

  • Thanks for the info mate!

  • my friend you where a great help to me thank you very much.

  • nirvana ftw

  • Perfect form on the lat pulldown at 2:45 lol FAIL

  • @nycskater67 I spend most of my time watching what's going on in the background of these video's -- that's where all the funny shit happens, like Mr. Rubberband on the lat pull down machine. LMAO!!!

  • Guy walking by at 2:00 is a beast!!!! :D

  • @VancouverPoland Old guy is Ripped Van Winkle

  • @VancouverPoland I KNEW as soon as I saw that dude in the video there'd be a comment about it with over 20 thumbs.

  • @VancouverPoland ROTFLMFAO!

  • @VancouverPoland hahahahahahahahahahaha! That made my day ! :))haha

  • @VancouverPoland lol i was expecting for some huge guy to walk by and then i see that old man lmao

  • @VancouverPoland lolol

  • never known a gym to play Nirvana. its usually dance electro shit down at my place

  • so deadlifts are designed to target legs?

  • @2010promotecheese they are one of the few ways to safely target your lower back

  • I'm starting a 5x5 workout this summer, thanks alot man.

  • @absolutemonarchist

Watch Dead lift exercise-How to fix a common form mistake by elliot hulse uploaded by strengthcamp that should definitely help you

  • how would you do it if your tall.? Im 6'3 and get it hard to do this.

  • @MrTrx45o height shouldn't be a problem if you nail down the technique. im 6'1, start off low, ass out and drive thru heals.

  • i like the old guy with the handband @ 1:58

  • @jcheung926 looks like a towel+newspaper to me

  • Hi mate hows it going i was just wondering ive read alot about deadlifts. I read doing this excersise increases your overall body mass? is this true? and what are the actual muscles being worked when performing this excersise?. thanks

  • @xllClouDllx The whole of your posterior chain is worked so everything from ur neck down really, so when you do the deadlift, it hits the back, the lats, the quads, the glutes, the arms and forearms, and even the abs. This is why its such an overall mass builder because it hits so many muscle groups and by doing so it helps produce allot of anabolic hormones due to the increased stress on ur body

  • @kenny01622 Thanks bro was real helpful. gotta add this to my workouts :)

  • @kenny01622 For overall mass and strength does it matter if i go heavy or not? can they make me run faster If i do them explosively? and does it hit all of the muscles you mentioned equally or some more than others?

    thank you

  • @lordvoldemort578 To answer your question it primarily works your legs and back but is awesome for your all over physic because it puts allot of stress on all your muscles producing allot of anabolic hormones, and they would strengthen your legs, so make sure you do squats to increase dead lift weight, they would make your legs more powerful but not sure that would increase speed, it might help.

  • love how your showing how to do proper form and the guy in the background is doing lat pulldowns behind his head which as far as i know is a good way to add alot of unneeded strain

  • I have a question: I noticed in all your variations you also used a bit of your legs to get the bar up, but when I do deadlifts, I do about 90Lbs plus the bar , and when i go up I keep my legs in the same position the whole time so im using my lower back for 100% of the workout. I've been doing this for a while and never had back problems, but shoud I use my legs also?

  • This guy looks like a beefed up version of Steve-O

Anyway, thanks for making the vid :)

  • All stars,nirvana,what a coincidence.

  • @ffanatic87 - Thanks, I found that video after I posted my original comment. BTW - Elliot knows his shit but he's not a 'cool dude'. I came to this conclusion after seeing numerous videos of him wearing 'Alex Jones' infowars T-shirts. In case you don't know, Alex Jones and his 'infowars' site promote 9/11 truth conspiracies. Not cool in my book nor to any one in their right mind in my opinion.

  • We use a different tipe of bar at my highskewl

  • lol this is terrible form. Your feet are too narrow and your knees go outwards. Good luck trying that with some weight on the bar. Fail at making an instructional video when you don't even know how to do it

  • @CrimsonJokes wheres your video on doing a proper deadlift. the man has been in bodybuilding competitions for a while as well as lifting for a while. hes a big guy and im pretty sure he knows what he is doing. so quit talking shit unless you have a video

  • @goatkiller68 The guy's actually kind of right. Maybe it's the angle of the camera but his stance for conventional does look a little bit too narrow. I've been trained, and my mentality of how to place my feet is to imagine I'm doing a vertical jump. To generate the greatest amount of force that would be the most ideal stance if you really think about it. Also the bar should be lined up over the MIDDLE if your feet, not over the toes.

  • You should be pulling the bar with your back, and you should lower your shins to the bar.

  • i need help, when i do deadlift. the bar touches my shins sometimes. What am I doing wrong, is it too heavy if thats the case what should i do to improve on that mistake?

  • Lee, which form do you recommend for building a stronger core?

  • Leemhayward may allah bless you my friend !!!

    Great explanalation

    Great video

  • This is a great vid for people startin out, but ive found once you get to higher weights you really need to drop that bar quick instead of slowly lettin it down like he does here (gets to your groin) and im not hating here, im a big fan of lee

  • im a pretty skinny guy, should I do more weight with less rep? or less weight and more rep?

  • @fergusphone12

you should eat. then eat some more. then push iron, then eat, then sleep. and repeat.

  • @DeepBickle what if u have plastic plates at the gym =P

  • This is probably a stupid question, but doing a deadlift at 135, does that mean each plate is 135, or that the entire barbell weighs 135?

  • @Aquablade5

When someone says they are lifting a certain weight it means the total of all the weight plates and the barbell added together.

  • @leemhayward - My shoulders roll forward when I deadlift and it hurts my rotator cuffs with all that weight pulling on my arms. It's probably due to my posture problem which I am currently doing exercises to correct but I want to keep deadlifting in the meantime. I'm pretty sure my form is okay apart from that. Any advice?

  • @AbsoluteMonarchist

If you look up and hold your head back that should prevent your shoulders from rolling forwards as you do the exercise.

  • @AbsoluteMonarchist you could also use a trap bar.
