  • i dont care about the nationality. i just want the actors to not suck.

  • Although I respect your opinion, I was just curious to know if you realized the characters are derived from the Chinese culture? Though knowing Hollywood, they know they needed to find White people to 'bring in the crowds' to make a few million dollars. Apparently, Hollywood is a century behind in being more worldly and open minded. Guess white people are still ruling the world eh?

  • Just becuase their nationality is made up doesn't mean they're not Asian or Inuit.

  • Hey Rand, i respect your opinion, but let me give you a hypothetical question, Will Smith, a huge name in hollywood, wants to create a trilogy, Lord of the Rings, and he casts it with a predominantly african-american cast with a few caucasians in the background. People protest, claiming that the world it is set in is based in a european setting, so the cast should be primarily white. Is this racist? Middle earth is a fictional place, but is it racist, or racebending at all? What do you think?

  • @cjaguar1 for a typical North American( which I consider myself one, even though I'm ethnically Chinese), that idea of casting sound absolutely stupid. but that just showed further how slanted our way of viewing things are when we can make excuse for white people simply by implying our sense of normalcy. All in all, when we can excuse TLAB's cast and give an excuse for the world being "not real" but not for your idea, we have something seriously wrong with our ability to judge

  • cause it's not definitely asian doesn't default white. you clearly admit that the cultures are strongly implied to be asian. how are you more upset about protesting against cast whitewashing than you are against the actual whitewashing? It's not a contradiction to point out that the casting clearly favors caucasian auditioning for the main characters, as even zuko was originally casted white before the actor had to drop out. of course you're not gonna find asians to cast if you don't look.

  • this movie sucked even more than expected :D

  • i think they should have made it so that they should have looked like the anime character not an uncle thats white while the the kid is indian i mean are we gonna have movies about acient china and the guys are mixed asian white and black if your gonna make a good movie you should atleast get that right and if they spend 100 million on a movie they should atleast be able to stand a little critics

  • this is a nice video but I believe you got your information wrong by interpretation. This means even though this world is fake, how come white people get the roles instead? I mean LOTRs was a fantasy world but you don't see any asian or mexican in those movies, so isn't racist by your standards on how you are judging this controversy?

  • Comment removed

  • And this, friends, is one of the oh-so-many reasons not to make live-action movies of stories set in alternate universes.

  • From your little "thesis", I could tell your entire video is stupid.

In the animation, the Asians and possibly Inuit are heroes. The Fire Nation is white.

In the movie, the WHITES are the heroes, and the Fire Nation is ASIAN.

There is NO PURPOSE but having your generic Mighty Whitey do everything. OH HELL A MINORITY A HERO? PFFFFF

That's about as stupid as calling the Civil Rights Movement racist for wanting rights for someone OTHER than whites, and being angry when they got hosed.

  • LOL at 4:16... how many WHITE people are between the ages of 10-12 who happen to be skilled in marshal arts.

  • Just because he does not have an asian nationalality doesnt mean hes european or american. I know race does not equal culture and I can be a chinese boy with completely... say Jewish culture. But MOST people who are Jewish wouldnt look like me and have my RACIAL features. I saying that In the show avatar, nearly all cutlures and peoples have ASIAN based culures, so dosent it make sence to have ASIAN based peoples.

  • Wow, what a racist video.

  • YOu are stupid. look up what they did on spawn The Movie. Its a plot not to give other races a good role model.

  • You stupid cunt . stupid video made by a stupid racist queer .

  • dude, I do not support the idea of the movie being 'racist' but I do have a slight suppor t towards people that sya that because ALL of the avatar universe is oriented to be Asian, alll of the clothings, the food, the cities, architecture, and pretty much everything else is intended to be totally asian, and more precisely, chinese. However, I think the 'racist' rant comes to less when you compare the rest of the REALLY crappy details of this movie that made it fail so bad

  • watch?v=TYOTp7EoYqc Never mind, here we go. Check the last few seconds. M. Night himself describes the Avatar as "Air...bending...small ASIAN child". There is THAT enough evidence. It's obvious that at least HE considered Avatar as Asian. Despite any of your opinions (or mine for that matter) M. Night considered Aang as Asian. 5% of the U.S. is Asian. That's over 15 million. "Not a great abundance"...really? Dumbass.

  • I don't even want to waste my text-breathe on this crap. Somebody rant back on this guy for me please.

  • stupid croaky voiced little cunt

  • Movie bad!!!! :(

  • This is sad. I only hope this is made by some teenager, whose only fault is that his brain isn't well developed yet.

Why on Earth do some of us turn a blind eye and say that: "where's the proof that the Avatar(show) consists of the Asian race?"

Is it not enough that most cultures in the show resembles oriental Asia?

And is it not enough that the fiction genre itself mirrors our own world?(Fiction does not mean complete fiction, because it does not deprive itself of matters from reality).

  • @AnAyeFilm

    Continuing:

As writers, whatever worlds we create from we create from our own imagination. But know that our imagination comes from our mind, which is sustained on this Earth. This Earth, where cultures matter to us, and where people of those cultures matter, too.

If the eastern philosophies and all don't have enough credible arguments for the show's race(s), then...

I don't believe we have to show you any proof of the most obvious things if you fail to perceive them yourself.

  • you're not showing your face because you don't want to be trolled while making this review... obvious (and I did hate the movie)

  • Stupidity abounds....

  • Nice try buddy, but how do you explain Caucasian Katara and Sokka having eskimo as relatives? Good luck explaining that to a 10 year old..

  • i respect where you are coming from and appreciate what you said. honestly the race didnt bother me at all. from time to time i thought it was weird to see some people in the movie, black, white and so for but all in all to me was the fact that if you played the part right in the movie like the acting or staying true to the story then i was fine. yes i will admit the because the cartoon was mostly based on asian that i expected asian people to play it but it didnt happen and that was ok with me.

  • You are missing the point that it's not about race or racism but about culture and fidelity to the source material. Middle Earth isn't Earth either but they didn't make Frodo asian and Aragorn black. Avatar TLAB is in an asian culture world like LOTR is European. It's no because of the skin that I'm angry, it's because if a director chose a white actor for B. A. Baracus in the A-team movie, I would be just as angry like the chinese cast for "Memory of a geisha". Avatar is an asian fantasy.

  • I totally agree with this. Thanks for clearing up the nationalities with wikipedia. However Im not suprised this "whitewashing" situation is happening. It seems whenever there is KungFu there has to be some asians in there somewhere. That's what people expect for some reason. It's like a hip hop movie with no blacks in it. Or a black person playing the leading role in a movie biopic as elvis presley. lol. I loved this movie for what it was. And youre right, other people should too.

  • it still asian the cartoon is based on asians

  • @msalah2341: Ah BUT the water tribe are inuit and Eskimo.

  • failed video, and you sound like a queer!

  • @DJvgie Failed comment, and you made yourself sound like a sped!

  • @Randcreviews what's a sped?

  • 5% of Americans are Asian, yet only 1.7% of main protagonist are Asian, why can't Asian stand up for this clear discrepancy in casting?

  • thumbs up for ASIAN CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!!...

  • "Princess and the Frog" is just a children movie - why is it so important for black children ? Because they finally see their images represented. They know that they can be princess, pretty and can have the same opportunity just like any other races.

  • Comment removed

  • 1) uh hello, what do you mean by stupid ? We have obvious evidents to back up our arguments. Choose your words wisely if you want to get your point across.

    2) Heard of Brandon Soo Hoo ?

    3) uh if race doesn't matter, why all the extras in the background is asian and dark-skin tone people? but the lead roles are caucasians.

FYI, Racebender's issue is not about Caucasians. It's about the culture is misrepresented.

  • Hmmm I was just mad that the movie wasn't good. I really liked the graphics a lot but the acting wasn't good. And it went off the story line. They had to sit there and talk bout what was missing. Who does that. The races don't bug me. The movie itself was horrible. I wish they would've gone with the name, it was annoying that everyone in the movie corrected the names and i mean EVERYONE corrected them. When the movie went black everyone boo'd then another clipse with the fire lord came up.

  • thank u, this guy undersatnds

  • It didn't matter about race or stupidshit, heres the deal THE MOVIE SUCKS PERIOD!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah, let's cast blacks, Asians, and mexicans in The Lord of the Rings because surely they can act better. The culture of the story does not matter because it's just a fantasy story. It's not even of our world. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • obviously you have no idea what racism means, and nothing i or anyone else says to you will change that. go on and post your "smart" counterargument, and go on living in your dream world.

  • btw, this is NOT a children's movie ...

  • Smh only a fucking white person would object to the controversy bc it benefits them. You say that you watch the series then you know very fucking well that every fucking element of the series is based on East Asian culture and custums. its quite fucking clear that they are asians in the series yet u argue that complaining that bc they aren't asian in thr adaption is racist, but u don't consider the fact that every main protag is fuckin white

  • This is one of the dumbest videos of all time.

  • I'll simply say that despite your argument, I believe very strongly that most characters in avatar are of ethnicity other than Caucasian. The only character I believe not be asian, would be Katara and Sokka, who I believe to be more akin to indian/eskimo. I would have greatly appreciated it if the casting stuck to this formula.

  • Where are u getting ur info from? ANYONE with EYES can tell this series takes place in asia, somewhere in China. the setting, the food, the clothes is ALL asian, that doesnt justify why they wont cast Asians as the lead. Its not like only ONE asian lives in america evn if we are a minority

  • they're protesting because they called for "caucasion, or any other ethnicity" to play all of the heros, but all the antagonists are brown, you cannot even understand how we feel about this.

  • @zillatamer This was taken from The Last Airbender wiki: On April 8 Frank Marshall conducted an interview with UGO.com where he showed the original casting calls that did not have the line "Caucasian or any other ethnicity". According to him, other local casting offices distributed the "offending" casting calls with out permission. This statement agrees with M. Night's statement that the doors were open to anyone.

  • @Randcreviews How are the doors "open to anyone" if the LOCAL CASTING OFFICES specified a preference for Caucasian actors?

  • It doesnt matter if Shamalon ment to recast characters who are depicked as asians as whites to me as much as the fact that he is still supporting racial steriotypes that asians still cant be heros and middle easters still cant be good guys ect. and because the primary audiance is children.... he is just teaching the next generation this is okay.

  • @BeastRider300 He originally had an Asian pairing for Katara and Sokka, but then settled on Nicola and Jackson. He felt they were simply better actors, that's all.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed rlly? who were these actors. but its still not accurate because they where inuit chidren and i feel shamalon didnt look very hard to find the right actors

  • @BeastRider300 They're names have not been given, but it was confirmed by M. Night Shyamalan in an official statement. In the movie, the Northern Water Tribe is European and Russian, and so it makes sense that Katara, Sokka, and Gran Gran wouldn't look like the rest of the Southern Water Tribe. M. Night said that Nicola Peltz nailed the role so well, that he wouldn't want to do the movie without her. He said he's only said that one other time in his career, with Haley in "The Sixth Sense."

  • @BeastRider300 You do realize that the Earth Kingdom in this movie is going to be Asian and African-American..correct? Last time I checked, the Earth Kingdom isn't villainous at all

  • @Randcreviews but the earth kingdom does not represent the main characters which the story will be following. I know Suki and posibly Toph are east asian but they are not the heros saving the world or are introduced half way into the story

  • @Randcreviews . asian clothing, asian name. asian buliding. asian martial art. all asian culture. asian writing. white people in an asian clothing has asian name do asian martial art asian influence is disturbing. the world of avatar is asian people also inuit.

  • @Randcreviews Oh God its DBZ all over again turing chacters who where asian into caucasion

  • @Randcreviews also everyone says Zuko is a villain but if they watched the show the would know that Zuko actually turns out to be a hero.

  • @Randcreviews

Yes minorities in the background, where they belong, white people are central to the world and everyone else is irrelevant or in the way of the white glory, riiiiggggghhhhtt...

  • @Randcreviews Well the Dai-lee were pretty evil

  • @randcreviews

WOW YOU TRUELLY ARE A BIGOT.

Starters, there is NO SUCH RACE AS BLACK/WHITE. Your culturally UNDEVELOPED.

The cartoon is based on ASIAN theme ASIAN FANTASY ASIAN myth ASIAN culture.

So naturally the characters should be ASIAN.

Bear this in mind JEsus fake name, is a ASIAN but 1492EURO ROMANS defaced this. There is a histortyy of this by 1494EURO

As for PRIMITIVE ROMANS they WORSHIPED a ASIAN deity MITHRAS

Your POINTs IS ABJECT & WRONG.

    Go learn some CULTURE.

  • The biggest thing is that M. Night took it in a new direction. While the TV show is heavily influenced by Asian culture, M. Night is making it a racially universal movie, and having characters and influences from all sorts of ethnicities. It's not just East Asian anymore, it's everything.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed However, he would be the first to make a movie with only people of tribes and civilizations completely based off of real asian cultures. why isnt that good enough?

  • @BeastRider300 I'm sure it would be good enough. But why stop at "good enough", if you can include everybody? One thing M. Night loved about the show was how everyone saw themselves in the characters, and everyone could relate to the characters. That idea is only expanded with heroes from all sorts of different ethnic backgrounds.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed People of differnt races seeing themselves in the characters doesnt have anything to do with the races of the characters. Also Avatar is a world of different asian cultures (with small eceptions).Shamalon justifys what he is doing as making it better by mixing the world.but all the replaced cultures in the movie still seem to have asian decent similar to the show. they all practice chinese mashal arts. Worship chinese mythology and in the air nomads case wear east asian clothing

  • @BeastRider300 M. Night stated that as we learn more about the nations, we are going to see more cultural influences based on the races he assigned them. He is changing the culture of Avatar, not just the characters.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed Thats very sad because the cultures of the avatar world where a huge part of the story. the cultures where the soul of the tv show i loved where i could see a child who looked like me saving the world.

  • @BeastRider300 You're right, culture is a huge part of the show. In M. Night's version, there will still be vast amounts of cultural influence, but incorporating a lot more cultures. He says that the culture was what drew him to the show, and that's something he cares deeply for. He's not going to short-change it.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed explain how it is racially diverse, if the actual ethnic people that were suppose to play the heroes are COMPLETELY NOT PLAYING THE HEROES. explain this to me, if the creators of the harry potter films would like harry to be black and the weasleys to be blonde so that they could be diverse, would it be right?

  • @venthesen M. Night made the Earth Kingdom Asian. Suki is played by a Philippino. Haru, Tyro, Toph, King Bumi, and Avatar Kyoshi will all be Asian.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed wrong, toph isn't in this movie, suki is half white half philippino. Haru is half chinese half white. If you were to see the actors playing these roles u'd understand wat i mean. I don't think u get it, the ethnicitiy matters but if the person doesn't visually look a certain way they jsut can't play a role. I want u to go research the faces of these actors and then talk. Wat about ym harry potter question? oh yeh and all of theses characters r secondary

  • @venthesen I didn't say Toph was in this movie, I was saying she will be Asian. I have researched their faces, and I agree they are mix but does that make them less Asian? I want you to go research M. Night's conception of the movie. He's making it more than just Asian culture. He's broadening it to a wide variety of cultures. HP would work if the director combined European culture with Asian culture in a creative way just like M. Night is combining Asian Culture with a variety of cultures.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed first of all u havn't answered my harry potter scenario, secondly ur argument is that M. night is diversifying the idea by putting more different ethnicities into it ,right? Thats where ur wrong, its ok to want to diversify but the actors u choose MUST look like the ethnicity, the SUki is played by a half filipino, but she looks white. Based on that argument White Africans can be given the roles of Earth kingdom people and M. Night can say there r africans in this, its diverse.

  • @venthesen Suki looks white in her main photo, but the in rest of her photos, she looks very Asian.

  • @venthesen And I did answer your Harry Potter question. I said if the director chose to do the series mixed in with Asian culture, then he could cast an Asian actor and it would work.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed now u r just crzy, u r telling me that if a black guy played harry no one would have any objections, if a chinese guy played harry no one would have and objections. There wouldn't be protest but there wouldn't be any sequels as no one owuld like it. Why because it isn't what most readers visualize when they read the book. Same for avatar, we visualize Aang as asian not a white Texan who is bald

  • @venthesen I'm not saying that people wouldn't be upset if Harry Potter were a different race, I'm say that if they did it right, it can be done well. Tybalt was black in Romeo + Juliet, and no one had any objections to that. It was a different interpretation. M. Night did a different interpretation of the show, and the fact that the different nations were different races, in my honest, unbiased opinion, worked well for the movie.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed u obviously havn't been to england, people would be very against a black harry potter, not cuz they racist, but because the story intends for him to be white, not black or brwon. I felt the movie was retarted, if the races were to be mixed then why not make the characters who r ethnically mixed in the series ethnically mixed in the movie, why r ALL TEH good guys white, when in the anime they r of different heritages.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed M. Night's perception sucks, theres no argument against it. If he cant see the diversity of the anime and turn it into a decent movie, then he has failed , which he did, i give the movie a 4 out of 10 and only for special effects

  • @HoraceGoodspeed as a matter of fact it does make the less asian. The whole issue is how the characters look. Is it a coincedence that all of the "diverse" characters r mixed taht look more white than their asian ethnicity. This sin't creativity if it isn't nearly the same as the series. Can u honestly tell me after u look at their faces that the first thing would be Asian person, No u can't which means that viewers won't know unless research.

  • @venthesen The movie will be very, very much like the series. And as far as looks, I thought Aang was 100% Asian, and Suki has one picture where she looks white, the rest she looks very Asian. Check out her IMDB.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed who cares what u or i think. There was a poll across ontario which asked wether or not they thought the actor who played aang looked like him, 80% said NO. Go to toronto star.com. Canada's most populous province isn't convinced by aang so u lose. The actress playing suki has asian heritage, but Visually her face doesn't look asian. R u blind? the woman looks mexican. Admits it herself.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed Who told u or where did u find out that SOkka and Katara are European or Russian. You may be colour blind as very few russians or europeans are naturally darksinned, wear their hair and clothes in inuit fashion, and eat inuit based food. Teh closest thing to them is scandanavians and they r white and blonde, so ur arguemnt is baseless. Try again.

  • @venthesen I was talking about the actors in the movie. And, the fact that Sokka and Katara have such dark skin in the TV show is actually quite inaccurate. Because of the low amounts of sunlight in arctic regions, people who live there would have a much lower rate of melanin in their skin due to optimum vitamin D synthesis.

In the Movie, the Southern Water Tribe will be Inuit, and the Northern Water Tribe will be more European and Russian.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed this is where u r ignorant, first wat race r u? K it isn't inaccurate, the world is fictional, BUT the creators both stated taht sokka and katara weere made based off inuit culture and heritage, and i dont know if u've seen inuits they r dark skinned. So i dont know where u came up with this russian euro crap.U need to understand, giving the lead roles to whites while giving back roles to colours isn't diversity.

  • @venthesen None of your business, but I'm half Japanese. Inuits are not dark skinned. They have asian features, but their skin tone is very light. I researched this movie and found that M. Night stated in an official interview that he based the Northern Water Tribe off what Katara, European and Russian. Katara and Sokka are just two roles out of dozens. Sorry, but diversity includes white people.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed of course it isn't my business, but u answered anyway. Inuit people have a dark tinge to their skin, i don't think u've ever met an inuit. I have inuit buddies, they look like dark oriental people. I'm not against whites in this moive, im' against them having the lead roles in places they have no business. If they whites were fire nation and katara sokka, and aang were the colour they were suppose to be, no one would care. M.Night baerly consulted with the creators.

  • @venthesen I have inuit buddies, too, and they look white.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed i have inuit buddies as well (metis mixd) and they look white as well, but if u'ev ever been near aninuit family u'd realize that the majority of inuits look oriental. they look different and denying that is just stupid

  • The whole 'colorblind' thing is just too convenient an excuse for many almost to the point of blind stupidity. What they fail to realize is that 'race' does matter when it comes to populations of certain cultures in this case Asian cultures. The cartoon was done in manga/manwa i.e. 'anime' style so the big eyes may give somewhat a "caucasian" feel to some, but let's face it-- the producers themselves stated they were Asian as shown by their cultures. To white wash them in live-action IS racist.

  • @LordInit The show wasn't white-washed. Zuko is played by an Indian, Iroh is played by a Middle-Eastern, Suki is played by a Philipino, Princess Yue is played by a mix, Haru is played by and Asian, Tyro is also played by an Asian. I'm not sure what Ben Cooke, who plays Avatar Roku is, but he looks Middle Eastern, and I'm also unsure what Noah Ringer is, but he definitely looks mixed.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed Ringer isn't oriental mixed, Peltz and Rathbone r totally white, suki is half white, so is the actress audtioned for topk. Only haru and tyro r out right asian, hmmm two very minor characters.U forgot to emntion how the whole evil fire nation is brown, except zuko and iroh. Oh and iroh don't have his big signature belly, yup M. Night is great at visualizing characters. put in a toothpick to play a fat man.

  • @venthesen The fire nation isn't "evil." Watch the show again, it's quite clear. Ringer isn't oriental mixed, but they didn't know that when they cast him. Toub does a great job portraying Iroh.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed DUDE U HAVE NO BRAIN, this is a movie about the first book:water. In the first book the fire nation is portrayed as evil, if one person in Iroh is good the whole nation can still be evil. There is no inidication of them being good. Zuko is evil in there, agreed he is sort of an anti hero but he doesnn't become the anti hero until the second book. Toub sucked, he had no belly and iroh looks chinese in the anime

  • race? No, and you will not, because that is the fucking source material!!! They have ALWAYS been white! Now you take things like: Kung Fu, 21, Last Airbender, Prince of Persia, A Mighty Heart and you can see that the source material was disregarded in terms of the race of the characters. It is easy for you to not have a problem with this because...YOU ARE WHITE! And of course you will take the easy route to scream reverse racism...you moron.

  • To whomever made this video...if you cannot see that Hollywood has been making the heroes from known source material into white characters as the heroes when they are clearly, African American, Asian or any other race, you are a FOOL! It is not racist to want to see someone that is from your particular racial background for a change other than white people all of the time. Do you hear a majority consensus of complaints stemming from Batman, Spider-Man or Wolverine being white instead of another

  • @Venthesen honestly, kids dont give a flying sh&# whether aang is asian or not. And this is coming from a japanese woman. My children have plently of respect for their race, but when i ask them about it, they say that they "didnt know aang was asian". I mean this in the most respectful way i can, but i think your overreacting a little.

  • @emking100 look up "Black or White something to think about "

  • @emking100 of course u'd think we r overreacting. Think of it this way, if the directors put asians in as the orignials in the first place, none of this shit would have come up. This is about asians being left out of the lead roles cuz of some bigot director. How would u like it if the history of japan was amde into a movie but all the people were white, with japanese names and clothing. Its just not right.

  • Besides, how many movies do you see being made with all the main characters played by Asian actors? ...NONE. It's about time we had some Asian leads and not just Asian villains. Children are more likely to believe that the dark-skinned character is a bad guy - that's seriously messed up. People of color need heroes who look like them too.

  • True, Avatar is a fantasy world. But if you look at the architecture and all the inspirations, it is clearly based on ASIA. In the same way that Lord of the Rings is based on Europe (celtic influencs, etc). Mike and Bryan, the creators of Avatar, traveled to China specifically to gather inspiration, and it shows. The reason you can't tell Avatar is Asian? Probably because you know nothing about Asian culture.

  • How many people are between the ages of 10 and 12, happen to be Asian, are skilled in martial arts, and can act? BRANDON SOO HOO, a black belt, who has also received an award for acting in a supporting role. He's 13. Noah Ringer, on the other hand, has been sent to acting school (AFTER his casting as Aang) because...he can't act.

  • @Vanya12301922 We don't know if he can act or not, because we haven't seen him. He could be bad, or he could be good.

  • i'm glad to see ur open to the characters being played by virutally any race. I admit i'm being a bit unreasonable unless i see the film (when its released), but i will i have to see it, if i dont i can't make any statements about it. Heres the whole issue, favouring white child actors over asian ones isn't ok. Please don't tell they tried their very ebst to look fer an asian actor becasue they didn't. They found a korean actor who is playing "earthbender"

  • @venthesen M. Night wasn't looking for any race in particular. He wanted there to be different races in each nation, but that depended on however the cards fell. He said that Nicola Peltz did Katara so perfectly, that he didn't want to make the film without her. He's only said that once before in his career, about Haley in "The Sixth Sense."

  • @HoraceGoodspeed it doesn'ts matter who m.night wanted to work with, that is director favouritism. The argument that they "tried" finding suitable inuit people is a straightout lie. Don't mess with me when it comes to this as i research to the end before i make any statement.

  • @venthesen That's where your anger comes from. You fail to realize that M. Night is changing the whole movie from just Asian culture, broadening it to a wide variety of cultures. I also do my research to the end.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed If he wanted different races to be in this then why were the two main races ignored, Inuits and East Asians. Peltz hasn't anymartial art training nor does she resemble katara, that is reason enough to not hire her. He wanted to work with her prior to the film so no nonsense please about she is all perfect

  • Lets just clear one thing no one opnely goes out to anyone and says they wish they were white, and the ones who think that are little kids. No educated teen or adult will say they wish they r someone else. But litle kids, they most likely will. at the end of the day it does matter wat someone's skin colour is, not for jobs or rights but for simple little things like films.

  • kids grow up with tv rolemodels, very rarely do u see minority role models, like aang or sokka. Minority kids wish they r white cuz they have very few idols of their own skin. This is a fact, its not me being racist. kids will be disheartened after the movie, because the character that was their favourite is suddenly a whole different race.

  • @venthesen I understand where you're getting at. I first watch the show when I was 11 or 12. I didn't think anything about their race until now. But, really I could care less if Aang's white or Asian. For the most part, it shouldn't matter. I've never met one race of people that said "I wish I was white *sad face*". Everybody's their own person. Race shouldn't matter where one goes in his/her life. You can look up to a person, or fictional character, yes.But I have doubts that they wanna change-

  • @Randcreviews (con.) their nationality, because of Aang's ability to bend all 4 elements.

  • @Randcreviews If skin didn't matter would u honestly say u'd be alrgith with a movie about europe in the medieval times, where every one was black or brown? would it feel right?

  • @Randcreviews oh ey i forgot one thing, u must be white that is why u might not see this, no offense intended. But as a brown person who practices martial arts my self i knew instantly that this show had some hindu and bhuddhist themes becasue of the behaviour of the characters. Agni Kai is an indian thing, and most of the weaponry they use are from pacific rim nations. I don't beleive u truly didn't see that this was an asian based anime.

  • @venthesen Actually, I'm half white, half Salvadorian. And yes, I would be alright with them being a different race other than white. I'm not saying that they HAVE to be white. Would I mind seeing them Asian? No. Would I mind seeing them black? No. It would be different, but nonetheless I'd still go to see it. By the way, yes I did notice it was Asian based, hence I did say "I admit Avatar is in Asian-based world".

  • @Randcreviews the issue is about racism, ok ferget aang cuz the actor sort of looks asian. There are characters that shouldn't be white at all. I suggest u go to racebending com just to improve ur knowledge adn so u can understand why so many are against it. Look at the evidence they put of racism. Wanting asians to paly asians instead of whites isn't racism, its wanting the story to stay remotly original.

  • @Randcreviews

Would you mind seeing Tom Cruise play Barrack Obama?

  • Well are you trying to suggest they "should" have been an ethnicity? I sure hope not, otherwise your a hypcorite and your being racist right there.

  • @xonoma as a matter of fact thats exactly wat i'm saying, aang should have been casted by someone who looks oriental, the water tribe inuit, the firenation chinese. Why, not because i'm a racist hypocrite becasue i want LITTLE originality in the film, If a harry potter film was made with black people as the lead (nuthin against blacks) would the movie be the same, would it feel right, no it'd be a stupid movie, u need originality in film adaptations, ass hole

  • @Randcreviews Please go to racebending and look at ALL their evidence. U seem as a smart person, and if this continues i will just be repeatedly saying the stuff on that site

  • K, i support racebending, but i'll have a FRIENDLY DEBATE just to counter ur opinoins, lets keep this clean.Ok ur arguments are weak. First the creators themselves said that they felt Aang was asian and shortly after the casting was released they released a poster which depicted aang as a person form the zhao region from china so that ends ur argument about Aang could be any nationality. The writers intended him to be asian so he should be asian

  • This video screams of a limited world view and unacknowledged white privilege...

  • @Seiryu64

Haha I totally agree with you on that one.

  • The creator of this video has obviously never stepped outside of his "cultural box". I wouldn't recommend using his argumentative stances in a debate about this movie, you'll end up eating your own words in a rebuttal. ;-) Have a nice day.

  • @jmlew Uhh, yeah. I have. I'm white, I live in the ghetto area of Massachusetts surrounded by hispanics and African-Americans. In fact, I'm only half white. The other part is Salvadorian. I do endure racism. For the most part because of me being "white". So, with that I laugh at your assumption, 'cause it has nothing to do with anything. ;D Have a nice day

  • @Randcreviews

The only thing you proved is that even though you experience racism first-hand as you've stated, you blindly turn the other cheek when others are being discriminated against.

  • @jmlew You do realize that considering Aang to be ONLY Asian is racist in itself... right? Why can't he be white? Why can't he be black? Why can't he be hispanic? You clearly missed the point of this video. The point was that the site had reverse racism. They had a point that Hollywood is being racist, but they're also being racist. They're focusing on him ONLY being Asian, 'cause they're unhappy that they're beloved cartoon didn't follow how it played out in their head.

  • @Randcreviews

The creators of the show, DiMartino and Konietzo received a Peabody Award for a reason: phenomenal storytelling. Do you think that they would of gotten such an award if they culturally appropriated Asian elements yet make the characters White? In this day and age, Asian Americans are one of the most underrepresented media images in America.

  • @Randcreviews

It's disgusting and helps to further segregate people of ethnic origin. Europeans are able to properly represent their own culture, but Asians are not? Please do not come at me with "this is fantasy" bullshit, because meanwhile, yes it is fantasy yet the cultural CONTEXT is VERY REAL.

  • @Randcreviews

"You do realize that considering Aang to be ONLY Asian is racist in itself... right?" You're coming at me with the same mentality that the reasons why there are so few Asian Americans on television is because they're the minority. It obviously doesn't have anything to do with discrimination, right?

  • @jmlew Its not racist saying that a character with an asian based culture (and even guenuin look!) should be played by an asian character.

However it does seem a little racist that with all the talented asian actors, Brandon Soo Hoo, Paris ect. they choose an undiscovered white actor who had to take acting lessons and doesnt even know the right marshal art

  • @BeastRider300

Read my other comments. You'll see that I'm not supporting this movie due to their racially motivated vendetta.

  • @jmlew oh shut up. you know deep inside yout butt will be at the midnight showing

  • @sweetheart2109

Way to comment on something I left over a week ago. You're a real sweetheart, but no I won't go out with you. ;)

  • @Randcreviews then why can't harry potter be filipino? or why can't superman be mexican?

and did the cast practice martial arts (specifically kung fu)?i think aang is the only person who knows martial arts and I think his character is perfect!

  • Racebending is fighting for diversity in this movie. Not outing Caucasians.

All I'm getting from your video, however, is that Avatar is a fantasy realm and therefore Asians aren't allowed in it... but white people are?

Someone please tell me how that even begins to make any sense.

  • What the fuck are you listening to? I have NEVER said that Asians were not allowed, or any other ethnicities for that matter. I said: "It shouldn't matter, race does not play an important role in The Last Airbender" which is true. There was not any centric episode revolving around race? Unless I'm wrong, and there was an episode where Toph had to stop an earthquake, not because she's an earthbender, but because she's "asian".

  • Racebending, clearly says that they wanted to see Asians in the role of these characters... not Caucasians.

  • @Randcreviews There is a screenshot that shows the southern water tribe all huddled up. EVERY background villager is visibly inuit, but Sokka and Katara just happen to be white. Once again the creators intended them to be inuit, and in the series they look inuit (even hair styles). Its eitehr they are inuit with a skin problem, or holly wood felt that whites would be better heroes

  • @venthesen Sokka and Katara's lineage comes from the Norther Water Tribe, which will be more European and Russian. It makes sense that they wouldn't fit in.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed i'll keep this clean. U r hallucinating. The creators of this movie themselves said that Katara and Sokka and their whole dam tribe i based of inuit culture, een Katara's hair loopies and Sokka's ponytail (wolf of the great north hair style). Everything even their cuising is inuit, so how can anyone say that they r European and russion. This is where ur knowlesge is flawed. It doesn't matter wat the direcotr wants, if that want is completly different from the original story.

  • @venthesen It's not completely different, as the plot is the same, the character's struggles are the same, the themes are the same, and the message is the same. Ethnicity and culture was only one aspect to this brilliant series. I would think that a movie that incorporates more ethnicities and cultures (Indian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, African, European, Russian, AND East Asian) could be a great interpretation of a great show.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed Once again u missing the points, the plot is the same, so is the setting and everythuing, but the characters arne't. U can't have a movie of a series if the characters look NOTHING like they did in the anime/manga. Answer this if they cast only white africans for the earth benders than would this be diverse. Its only diverse if the Movie LOOKS diverse, if tehre r people of different colour.

  • @venthesen The setting is different, because the nations will be cultured after the ethnicities they represent. Noah looks the spiting image of Aang, that's one reason M. Night cast him. And Nicola and Jackson also look very much like the Katara and Sokka, if you get past the part where they're white.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed oh yeh u may think aang is white becasue his eyes r real wide in the anime, that is a manga technique to shoe how kids look smarty. He is asian, as confirmed by the creaotrs, therefore he should be asian in the movie.

  • @venthesen What do you mean exactly by white africans. White people who live in Africa?

  • @HoraceGoodspeed i mean white people born and rasied in africa, they r referred to as Afrikaaners. I'm surprised ur confused by the statement white africans. Oh and dont ferget the point i was making, would adding white africans be "diverse" for the roles of earth benders instead of black africans?

  • @venthesen You haven't even seen the movie, how can you say if it LOOKS diverse or not? M. Night himself said, when they were in the tent, "It looks like a model UN in here." He also said he thinks this might be the most ethnically diverse film in history.

  • @HoraceGoodspeed i plan to see the movie so i can back up my protest against its casting, without seeing it i will have no base. M. Night is an idiot, he barely ocnsulted with the creators, who released their views on how they made Aang asian. Most ethnically diveres sure it probably will have the most diverse cast of people playing the backing roles, while whites play the central roles of protgaonists.

  • Well guess what? The producers of the movie MADE this about race when they preferenced Caucasians. They're the ones who have created this lousy situation, and now they've gotta deal with the fallout.

  • Simple solution: Don't go see the movie. Seeing that there's an overwhelmingly highly critical response, the only thing I can say is "don't see it". Plain and simple. It's like L4D2, you don't like what they're doing, don't buy it. If you feel a film is being racist, don't see it. Don't know why you have to complain about something that you don't like and blow it out of proportion.

  • We aren't going to see the movie, as is, but we would also like for the practice of excluding Asians and minorities from primary roles to stop.

However, that doesn't change by simple apathy. Change is not a passive process, and grievances need to be made public in order for change to happen.

Telling us to simply be quiet and not go see this is tantamount to telling Rosa Parks to simply not ride the bus. It would technically be a simple solution, but would not have taught anyone a lesson.

  • @Randcreviews does jackson, nicola, or dave even know kung fu?

  • @Randcreviews moreover, lets say we make a film about the napoleanic wars, and his whole history, but we replace every white character with a black guy. And all the slaves become white, would it not seem wrong? The truth is anyone can play the character of aang or zuko etc.. but u have to LOOK like the character as well. a black guy cannot look like napolean, thats not racist its just a fact. A white person can't look like aang, its just a fact

  • @Hetaconcherie so yur saying that the creators of avatar put asian culture in the show to show how much the dont like minorities like aisians indians and blacks.

    p.s. go suck a dick

  • @Randcreviews you win for this, cause you are right. Fans are being racist by making it all about the colors of the characters. the producers and director and creators re wrote it to be a muliti race movie, not just asian. people cannot seem to get past that!

  • And I'll ask you again. If they somehow couldn't find any Asian or Native American actors for the part, why couldn't they have cast black, Latinos, Middle Eastern, or any other ethnicity actors? How did the initial cast of kids who were supposed to be playing characters from three different ethnicities end up white, white, white, and white?!

  • Have you seen other movies from different countries? Did you see Pan's Labyrinth? I did, and I saw no white people in it, as well as Black and Asian. Have you seen The Host? In there the only white people are the villains(who think up this disease to scare people) and is the one to create the monster(by ordering an Asian to pour chemicals down the drain) and a white person is the first to die as well. Aren't other countries doing the same thing you claim this is doing?

  • Pan's Labyrinth was set in Franco-era Spain and the Host was set in South Korea - and it DID have a sympathetic white character. It wouldn't make sense to have a bunch of Caucasians running around there. Just like it doesn't make sense to have them playing ALL the heroes in a fantasy world that is overwhelmingly based on Asian/Inuit culture, down to the fricking written language and the chopsticks.

  • Kinda like how our culture uses the Roman Alphabet, and Spanish is a Romance language. So, guessing from this everyone must be Italian, in every way shape or form. I'm Spanish/Irish, but I LOVE pasta. Pasta is an Italian food, I guess I'm Italian then. Oh wait, but my favorite food is a taco. I must be fully Spanish then.

Just because a person is using Asian things, doesn't mean they HAVE to be Asian. If you can find a law that says that, I'll be grateful.
