@VideoRightDown Well spotted! I wish she'd sing in her native tongue. Maybe that would put an end to grammatical monstrosities such as "for you and I". Why do artists from Europe and beyond insist on singing in English. anyway?
@BrainiacFingers Yes, and the same should apply to artists from this other European nation. "I can't get no satisfaction" (Rolling Stones) But in this ever changing world in which we live in ( Paul McCartney) "She's Got A Ticket To Ride" (Beatles) "We Don't Need No Education" (Pink Floyd) "If I was a sculptor, but then again, no" -Elton John (Bernie Taupin) It don't come easy. (Ringo Starr) "I wish I was special" (Radiohead) How does it feel like, to shine on everyone. (Oasis)
@nblumer LOL!!! Here's another classic line from 'Your Song' : "But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song" I'm not sure the Floyd song should be included in your list. I've always assumed that the lines "we don't need no education" and "Hey, Teacher, leave them kids alone" were meant to be grammatically incorrect. The irony being, "them kids" obviously do need education.
Yes the Pink Floyd double negative was a deliberate colloquialism, reflecting the children's voice of rebellion. One could also argue that the Rolling Stones' double negative was also deliberately folksy for other purposes. Is "For You an I" a deliberate use of nonstandard English - (similar to Bob Marley's "Pirate ships they rob aye")? I don't know but I wouldn't be suprised.
@nblumer I don't know about it reflecting the children's voice of rebellion. I think it's more ironic than that. I think it reflects the children's need for better forms of education. I agree about the Stones' double negative - it just sound good. However, I doubt very much that 'For you and I' was intentional. Let's face it, knowing when to use 'I' instead of 'me' and vice versa is something that gives most people problems.
This is one of my favorite Keren Ann songs. With some better sound you can really feel blues in her voice in the chorus. It's just a great mix of poetry and blues and the rawness it breeds within my still wondering mind of a break-up of someone who I truly care for. Such a great artist to paint a picture and also leave so much left to the observer to fill in the emptiness of this canvas of subtle pastels.
love you!!!
