This is the only show..where "White Fang"calls Soupy by his name..listen carefully..and prior to that grouchy woman calling on the phone..and "White Fang"says"Soupy".
I remember watching Soupy Sales with my parents when I was growing up.
One of the things I remember about the tv that we had is after adjusting the antenna everyone had to sit. If someone would get up the reception would go bad again then it would take like 5 minutes of re-adjusting the dang bunny ears again. LOL!!
I had forgotten this opening & closing! Great to see it again. What nobody appreciates about Soupy is how he worked in so many cultural references - like the Stephen Foster. What kids would know it now? Maybe Thomas Hampson was inspired by this show.
I believe that the piano (honky tonk) was also used in some of Becker's show. I just think no one will ever, again, live to see how men could pull off such ad libs, and maintain viewers like these WNEW genius'
Between he and Sandy Becker's adlibs there was never a live show better..and the fact was that these guys later claim they did not reherse! You must be kidding me, you cannot get that kind of synch from a show that had no rehersals..could ya? Oh, what the heck..I had no idea they taped the show..well did nto use much tape then.
@gmonet46 The show was only taped after his suspension. In fact some of the tape are still around. I used to be in the studio sometimes when the show was taped. I stood 10' from him! A VERY funny man. At my house during the summer, we used to have a great BBQ with select people from WNEW. Some of them were Milton (aka Soupy), Fred Scott, Sandy Becker, Sonny Fox, as well as many crew members. This is a time when crew members and talent acted as family. LIVE TV was GREAT!
That is what made WNEW and WABC AM so refreshing...a percieved insanity, that was unbelievable while being better than many of us might have thought. I was a student at Parsons School of Design in the city and used to do art work for many fo the agencies hiring student interns. Bewteen the media and the John Lindsay 'camelot', that was NYC, there was never a better time (1963-1968) or place for me. Your "inside insight" is so wonderful to know! Thanks.
@gmonet46 I forgot, there was a show called "with Mayor Lindsay" that was recorded in Sutdio-1 at WNEW. I think it aired on Sunday night. Also I fondly remember a great man, David Susskind. He was so gracious to everyone. He enjoyed working with his crew a lot, and he always remembered anyone who did a kind thing for him.
@rty1955 I found Susskind to be, like Ted Brown a, a gentleman and as you aptly put a "great man." Today's O'Reilly or Obermann know nothing of polite discussion, and all of talk radio will never hear the likes of Mr. Susskind.
I did and you surely are proud...Ray Young! The sheer insanity that went on, how he kept up with them all is amazing! I also loved the bid band ending...know the source?
Good old Soupy. 1965 was still a time of after school kids shows. A cold dark winter after school day would also include, Sandy Becker , Chuck McCann , Joe Bolton, and many others. Its funny i dont remember many kids going outside in the winter. We had great kids shows, dinner and homework in those days. We called dinner , supper , in those days. Goodbye my old after school pal ,Soupy Sales . I will miss him.
before hippies, before yippies before counterculture there was soupy you know he was subversive because there was almost no mention of his death in the mainstream media. i will always owe him
a debt to my consciousness. i have 5 of his 65/66 metromedia ny city shows on pirate disc. precious american artifacts. did you know the early pookie whistled
I sent an entry into his contest in 65. He would have 5 lucky kids ride with him on a Macy's Float in the Thanksgiving Parade. And a toy shopping spree at Macy's after the parade. I was still waiting for his call the day of the parade. I later found out my mother never mailed the entry. Bummer Thanksgiving that year. I was 8
Watch at the end during the running scene, how he slips the "Soupy Shuffle" quickly in! LOVED him...thankful he was there to nuture my sense of humor!
God Bless Soupy- one of the greatest fun guys to ever grace a TV set! Kids & adults alike all loved his shows. We should have more fun people like this in the media. They really made our lives better with their human touch and warmth. With little or nothing they made something. I'm sure Soupy is rolling his eyes right now!
My Dad used to always sing that song! I wonder if he learned it from Soupy? We always watched the show as a kid. Funny stuff. White Fang and Black Tooth and all the puppets crack me up.
It really was The Soupster for paving the way for the likes of Fred Rogers to Paul Reubens.
He treated the kids as adults, and the adults as kids. He was (and still is) the definition of 'fun'. He should be given the highest medals and citations IMHO. :)
Has anyone seen any remnants of the prime-time ABC network Soupy Sales Show from 1962 or 63? It was a half-hour on Friday nights, and of all the incarnations of the show, this one was the tightest, most rehearsed and funniest. Clyde Alder did the dogs and puppets. But it only lasted half a season.
THANK YOU for posting these wonderful Soupy clips! Loved him then... love him now! I was even backstage during a Soupy Sales Show taping in Hollywood in the late sixties. It remains a treasured childhood memory. Thanks again mamojica from one Soupy fan to another.
This was one of the 260 videotaped episodes that WNEW-TV (New York) syndicated to other stations during 1965-'66 [some stations showed it on kinescope film like this because they didn't have videotape facilities]. Typical opening routine between Soupy and "White Fang" {Frank Nastasi}...still funny!
i watched this show as a kid...brings back alot of memories!
